How does Ricky get a free pass on this? He has no responsibility? And why should we believe that he left because of overwork? I remember him saying he left because:
1. lost passion for football
2. contract did not pay enough
3. wrong person was named OC
4. overworked
5. failed 3 drug tests
6. NFL confined his ability to use recreational drugs
How do we know which one it is? Do we just choose #4 because it's the only that gives him no responsibility for his actions? Do we give him a free pass because he had a mental issue? Or do we just blame Dave because that makes us feel the best? Are we so passionate about the Dolphins that we will do anything to win? I personally believe that our dignity and self respect are more important. I will gladly give up a few wins to keep honor and respect. I guess I'm just not the type to "sell my soul to the devil" to win. Winning isn't everything. That's just my opinion. I'm sure some will not agree. i love the Dolphins, but will love them forever, not just when they win, and want to be proud to be a fan.
I would choose number 7 - Who cares? All I need to know is that he did not want to play football last year and that is his decision and I am fine with that. My guess is that it was probably a combination of 1-6 and he felt all were a reason at one time or another, but again, why does he need to give me a reason.
Could his timing have been better and should he have had more consideration of the team so they could plan for a replacement? - absolutely. If he had informed Wanny ahead of the draft could we have drafted a running back in the first round? - yes. Would this have changed anything last season? - debatable, but I doubt it.
Is the reason we went from a 10-6 or 9-7 team to a 4-12 because of Ricky? We were 11-5 without him before he got here, so what else changed. Was it
1) Our offense line that had become old and injured with no quality replacements in the draft forcing Spielman to try and apply a quick one year fix. How many of our veteran cuts were picked up last year?
2) Wanny bringing in his buddies to coach special teams and o-line. The first two years Wanny won special team and Westoff played a huge role by giving a short field to the offense after the defense had done its part. How many field goals did Mare have in that two year span? Armstrong brought no return game (It was always that we didn't have a good kick returner, but neither did Westoff) and multiple penalties. Wise brought a decline in o-line play that was apparent in 2003 and showed an inability to quickly coach up young lineman last year.
3) Wanny failing to bring in a quality back up to Ricky other than third down specialist Minor. What had happened if Ricky had gone down the first snap in practice?
4) Wanny having a coaching staff that was fighting internally for the entire year and promoting a tight ends coach to offensive coordinator when there were two other assistants with experience at that position.
5) The team and coach going in the tank after some shocking news. It should have taken them one or two weeks to get over Ricky quitting. Then the coaches should have adjusted game plans and players should have concentrated on doing what they needed to do to win games. The previous year New England lost Colvin before the season in training camp and shockingly got rid of Milloy right before their first game. It took them one game to recover. I believe they lost more starters to injury during the season than any other team in football, but still won the Super Bowl. Yea we lost starters on the defensive line, but our team was never able to recover from the shock until after Wanny was fired. What does that say about the coaching and team character? If their psyche is so fragile, no wonder we never won in late December.
Do you want Ricky to take responsibility for all of that? He didn't ruin the season last year, it was going to be bad whether he was there or not.
If he wants to return, has the ability to make the team and contribute, and can be signed so that he cannot financially hurt the team if he leaves again (I'm pretty sure this can be done), then why not let him return. The rest of the team should be worried about what they are contributing, not what Ricky is doing. If he comes back and quits again, oh well. You know the risk, have a back up plan and move on. How difficult is that?
How is that selling your soul to win? Its not like you are letting a convicted felon that has seriously hurt someone while drunk driving, wife/girlfriend beating, etc. join the team. I guess I am missing the great sin of not wanting to play football at some moment in your life and the moral injustice of letting him play again.
