Jonnu Smith not at mandatory minicamp

I wouldn't let Jonnu walk. That creates a hole where there isn't one and hurts the offense right away. Jonnu scored 8 TDs so he's pretty valuable in the red zone. He is the kind of TE we need and in addition he has great chemistry with Tua. Stop letting talent walk out of the building. Drew is a Dolphin friendly agent, give the guy some more money and some incentives like 1000 yeards and 10 TDs. Stop letting him hang out there, show the guy some respect and treat him right. I have a feeling that Ross shut off the money. The guy made the Pro Bowl, that's worth something imo. He was the only player from Miami in the Pro Bowl. This is a small and easy fix, what is taking so long. Show the dude some love, why do we have to choose now to play hardball.
I think some of it has to do with the extensions we handed out last year and how bad they look in hindsight with Reek Ramsey Tua and even Waddle… I can assure you there’s some buyers remorse there and that’s partially the reason we are hesitant to extend him early.

Grier has a bad recent track record of resigning the wrong guys, the money that ended up going to Ramsey should’ve been used to sign Hunt a year early etc.

I would rather not lose him but not keen to cave … we need to stop doing that.

Also, everything we’ve done this off-season is about both getting younger and changing the approach to the offense.

Jonnu was incredibly valuable last year on short passes where he could get yards after the catch and we did a lot of that because we just could not run the ball.

Now we’ve invested in new Guards, two big backs, a run blocking TE and a big WR3 who can block.

If we can get back to being able to run the ball effectively and so open up the deep passing game again … Jonnu’s role is going to be pretty diminished.

Obviously this could all not go to plan and so having the option - on the contract he signed - would be ideal.

Really good analysis of the Jonnu situation from Kyle Crabbs. He goes over recent TE trade history to give a realistic framework on what a potential return may be for Jonnu. He also likes the approach of letting Jonnu test the waters, he thinks both sides (Jonnu and the Phins) will get a clearer picture of Jonnu's (potential) contract worth that way. Worth a listen

But what would be the result if you start letting more and more players test the waters? It would most likely become a free for all with players wanting to do that all the way up to the trade deadline.

I wish players would just honor their contacts. Guess I'm old. 🤣

Given the situation, the Phins are playing it smart, and honestly, I believe Jonnu and Rosenhaus may be getting an eye opener as to what is out there contract wise from other teams. The Dolphins clearly have not done well recently with negotiating extensions , I actually feel more confident letting other teams show their hands so we get a true number to go off instead of just negiotiating against ourselves. Maybe a reasonable bump, a la the Raheem contract, but he's not getting a big number from the Phins. I believe in the end that when Jonnu doesn't get what he wants elsewhere he'll dutifully report to training camp with his tail tucked and play for his $3.49 million salary.

Oh cool a bunch of guys who are going to say play out your contract blah blah blah not understanding this is an entirely different situation.

Get your money while your can. Nobody here has ever had to focus your entire life worth of earnings in a 4-5 year period.

He had the best season of a TE in our teams history, he just watched Hill and Ramsey get paid increases (after already being paid huge deals) mid contract for mediocre performances so why wouldn’t he demand to be paid… top 10 TE money?

Fully guarantee the contracts and then we can have this conversation. Otherwise it’s illogical and dishonest to fault the players for trying to get paid. Billionaire owners don’t care about you when they’re cutting you a year into a 4 year deal.

I bet nothing happens and he plays for Miami this year. Has a solid year overall if a little unspectacular (especially early on). Then probably gets another 2-3yr deal somewhere else.

Just my guess.
