Jonnu Smith not at mandatory minicamp

This is a common misconception. The team made Wilkins a fair offer that would have made him a top 10 paid DT after year 4, and his team turned it down because he wanted to play out his 5th year option to increase his market value. As for Hunt, we don't know what could or couldn't have happened. Just because you wanted him to be extended sooner doesn't mean he would have gone for it. But I do think it's fair to say that the deal he eventually got from Carolina was astronomical, and there's no way Miami could or even should have tried to compete with it.
This has been explained 7,935 times and people are still too stupid to understand.

I highly disagree with you on the team not being in cap hell. Why do you think our secondary is so bare? Why do you think with armstead retiring and having terrible G play, all we can afford is an injured G coming off an Achilles tear? Grier has 100% put this team in cap hell the last 2 years. And Wilkins and hunt could’ve been resigned had we done it earlier like he did this yr with waddle. Now we just spent our top 2 draft picks in hopes to replace them
I don't think people understand this. Last season was them going all-in with their chips money wise.

This season they need to get back home without clothes from the strip club.

That is a separate issue. The NFL is generally heading to more and more contract disputes and I have zero sympathy for a player who signs a new deal and then 2 or 3 years later is seeking a brand new deal. They can **** off. Part of team management is trying to navigate the salary cap and allowing the team to grow.

Now as to team culture, it starts at the top and the owner allows it to happen, clean house from the top down or you'll have the same product year in and year out, this year will be no different.

I don’t know man.

You play this game for a finite number of years. If you have a chance to get market value at a time you have leverage — you do it. I’m saying this objectively. Not as a Dolphins fan.

It isn’t like owners honor the contracts players sign.

I don’t like it but I don’t blame Jonnu Smith.

Ramsey is a different story but it isn’t money related so this is a different situation.

Incentive heavy contracts. You perform well you make more.

You can disagree with me, but the math doesn’t lie. The Dolphins have been in fantastic shape in regard to the cap for a while now. Grier doesn’t manage the cap.

The secondary is bare because Ramsey decided to up and leave. And on paper it may seem bare to us, but let’s at least play a few games before we declare that the team sucks.

Again, the Dolphins, if they had wanted to, could have signed Hunt and Wilkins and made them some of the highest paid at their positions. They had the money. Like the Raiders and Panthers did, but that would have been stupid.

They made Hunt an offer, he and Athlete's First turned their noses up at it. Miami probably thought they could get a discount since he only played in 11 games in '23

"While Hunt’s original team, the Dolphins, were interested in retaining their 2020 second-rounder, it sounds as if Miami stopped well short of where Carolina was willing to go.Late in December they made an offer,” Hunt said (via Joseph Person of The Athletic (subscription required)). “I just thought it was a little disrespectful. It screamed that we’re not gonna pay.”

I tend to lean on the side of 'play out your contract'. You signed, happily agreed, now STFU and play. Xavien, Hill and Ramsey come to mind. They all signed huge contracts, then immediately wanted more

But Johnnu is making 4mil a year and I could say that this is a little warranted considering his play last year. I think we could afford to double his pay and extend him another year.

Let's not act like the man is broke, he as earned 44m in his career and his average yearly salary was 5.5m. Right now he is playing on a 4.2m average salary. If they want to bump that to 5 or 6m in his final two years fine but I ain't breakin' the bank for a 30 year old TE.

I don’t think anyone feels sorry for Jonnu. However, IMO it’s about fairness and respect. I wouldn’t sign the guy to some 5 yr deal at his age, but for how he played last season, and compared to other TE’s around the league, he should be making at least double what he’s getting paid.

I mean should he? He had one good year, last year. lol. Is it a flash in the pan or a trend? What are the odds he carries that trend into this season? 5 to 6m is what he gets, no new money, just a bump in base pay and if he wants an extension it's a 2yr contract max.

2yr, 5.8M per season maybe include some incentives.

Players are paid on past production (except for rookies whose contracts are based off of potential.)

Jonnu came in and produced last season like a top TE in the NFL and yet he’s being paid like one at the bottom of production.

I wouldn’t sign him to an extension. I’d offer between $8-$10m for 1 year.
