Mando's new blog: History between Aponte and Ireland

This kinda goes back to whether or not Ross is a good business man. His wealth and power accumulation would indicate that it is. I can't believe he would just let some 'hussy' butter him up. If she burrowed into his good graces she must have used some good logic on him and maybe her good logic is just good logic, period. Ireland is gone in a way where he keeps the appearance of dignity and Mike Sherman is gone.
We wanted the heads of Sherman and Ireland first, and now we have them. I don't wanna dwell on an abundance of negative speculation on the merits or lack thereof of Dawn Aponte. She might have good ideas and she might be productive in accumulating a more talented roster for the Dolphins moving forward.

No need to take sides. I don't like Ireland or Aponte. Armando does an excellent job reporting behind the scenes tidbits like this. You know darn well there would be squealing from inside franchise headquarters if there weren't substantial truth to it. They don't risk squealing because they realize it's only the tip of the matter, and don't want more to surface, even if it's mostly from Jeff Ireland.

I'm forever baffled that contributions like this aren't appreciated. Writers who cover the team are coddled with free seats and free food. Flopsies from throughout the organization try to manipulate them, to discourage or limit negative stories, to write like Andy Cohen. It takes more than a bit of backbone to provide details that don't put the team in a favorable light. We need more Armandos, not less of them. Well, maybe less of him. If we accept 5 or 6 losses a year no matter the caliber of the team I can excuse Armando's frequent lazy reporting. That's understandable these days when writers are asked to contribute frequent blog material instead of merely one print article and then lounge around until the following day.

I appreciate straight forward respectful treatment of the media. I'm convinced that more often than not it aligns with a self confident and high caliber individual(s) and organization. Exceptions, as always, don't impress me, if someone want to bring up Belichick. Loads of margin for error with Tom Brady. If Dawn Aponte feels the need to spoon feed Joe Philbin with his press conference material, and edit his videos, I don't respect her and I'm less confident in him. For one thing, the late season versions were not any more impressive or substantive than earlier. Perhaps that was the goal. There should be a reporter screaming at Philbin during those pressers, asking whose words we are hearing, his or a puppet? That's what you would have seen when Edwin Pope was in his prime. Disgusting.

Somebody, maybe Walrus, posted a video from one of the general manager candidates and his previous (maybe current) team, treating the public with respect with a candid assessment of the department and what they are trying to do. That's what the Dolphins need on top, the high caliber confident individuals that I've long asserted is what we lack, along with a competent stadium. If Philbin doesn't fall into that category, which is increasingly obvious, I have little confidence in him. He's the career long assistant with low upside, which is what I estimated as most likely when we considered him. Now he needs an exceptional general manager to bail him out, and quickly.

Also, if Aponte is a petrified cue card type, I'm not convinced her numbers game is spectacular. That's likely false hype. With this franchise right now you can't go wrong tilting to the low end. That's why I hit the 8-8 button in the season prediction thread, when my instincts were 9-7.

It was indeed me. It's a video from Tom Gamble's current team, the Eagles, during training camp. When you watch this, and then see how the Dolphins treat the media -- and by extension the fans -- the difference is stark. I think we've been treated as fans like this for so long we forget it's not the only way to go about things:

What I find especially disappointing is that Steve Ross claimed he wanted a more fan friendly, transparent organization after Parcells left. We haven't seen that yet. It's disappointing.

Someone pointed out the other day that Ron Rivera freely gives out injury information and is fairly candid with the press. Meanwhile, Joe Philbin acts like he works for the NSA. Maybe it just doesn't matter.

Aponte's influence, imo. She's right off the Parcells tree with that kind of stuff, and it needs to stop.

I don't doubt Aponte and Philbin worked to push Ireland out. However:

1. Do I have a problem with that? Hell no. Ireland being gone makes this one of the best days I've had as a Dolphins fan in a while.

2. Is this kind of thing somewhat normal? Yep.

3. Is that going to scare of a new guy? Not if he's worth a damn.

4. Are Aponte and Philbin going to team up against the new guy? Aponte and Philbin used the credibility they had to get Ireland fired, just as Ireland used the credibility he had to get Sparano fired. The credibility will go to the new guy, whoever he is.

Armando is just being a jackass because he's pissed he has to make a new friend. And because Ireland is giving him stuff he's not giving anyone else. That means clicks.

Uh, no. This is a problem.

1. It was said last year when players were negotiating contracts that Aponte was the bad cop, Ireland good cop. Maybe other way around but if your the GM trying to get Mike Wallace here, you are the good cop.

2. Aponte is looking to move up the ladder to high positions in life (NFL gig). This chick is a power freak. It wouldnt surprise me if Aponte had her own little strip club on the back of the plane.

Ireland in the end was the bad guy. They knew this out in public. Ross simply had to strip some power from him knowing he would leave on his own.

And as the song goes.....the winner loses on. Maybe Pioli and her would be great together.

Aponte is the accountant in Trading Places. Power trip to the man.

and i didnt say it happened. Just said I wouldnt be surprised.

Maybe a GM is repelled from the job because he has to keep Philbin?

No....I think it is a really good scenario for a new GM.

good salary cap situation, good young QB in place, good defense and special teams......and a coach that has the full support of the owner. So as a new GM, if Philbin doesn't make it, that doesn't reflect on me, it reflects on the owner. We have a full slate of draft picks, the resources to improve through free agency if needed......and top it off with an owner who seems to believe that his employees need to be given an opportunity to succeed instead of dumping them without giving them a fair chance.

Why WOULDN'T ANY GM CANDIDATE want this job?

Did I mention the South Florida weather?

Not seeing Joe here long term. any way you slice it.

Very interesting how each member of the Eagle's personnel team were interviewed and spoke well. We are so used to replicating the Belichick strategy of saying nothing - except name, rank and serial number. It is interesting that Philadelphia are revolutionizing how Offense is played. It could be smart to snap up Gamble.

I find your posts difficult to understand.

She's obviously very skilled, ruthless and cunning at corporate politics. In that regard, she takes no prisoners and plays to win. She's doing what's best for her career.

But between the tattletale story, and her fearsome (and impressive) reputation for manipulating organizations, I have a feeling that a lot of potential GMs are going to be turned off about operating in that kind of environment.

I'm sorry, I can't even be polite about this. Armando Salguero is engaging in a straight up hit job on Aponte, on Ireland's behalf

problem with that is she did the same kind of back stabbing ****e in cleveland as she has done here.

and she doesnt care a a rats teets about joe philbin. its the old , "my enemy's enemy is my friend". apponte would throw philbin to the crocodiles if he was in her way.

if ross does in fact give mega power to a bean counter over the MOST IMPORTANT JOB ON A TEAM, A GM WHO CAN ACTUALLY IDENTIFY TALENT AND KNOWS HOW TO DRAFT then its over before it starts and we need to start getting the PLEASE MR ROSS, SELL THE TEAM banners on airplanes. you just dont let a second year coach who still has a LOT to prove and a bean counter, a back stabbing bean counter decide the fate of the GM, especially one with the talent skills of a TOM GAMBLE.

the infighting part of this has been mentioned before the ireland fallout. i believe it all. she did it in cleveland. but the "she and philbin are making sure ross doesnt hire anyone who can fire them thing has a lot of holes. they may want that, but getting it is another thing and i am hoping ross doesnt cut off what the team really needs, someone to get talent in here and someone who KNOWS how to run and nfl franchise, the FOOTBALL part of it.

ross will end up and even bigger laughing stock if this indeed what his plan is, two give aponte and philbin a two headed monstrosity of power. this would keep the real talent away, just as when huizenga wanted a gm but they couldnt fire wanny [all wanted to] and had to share draft and talent with wanny. THAT is why dan marino bailed and thats why all the other REAL candidates bailed.

please, please, we just cant withstand part 2.

I am proud that the posters on this site realized the puppet string pulling that is goin on. I always wondered who Armando's major source in the team was...he had loads of info seemingly out of nowhere at times...now we know.

It's got to annoy Armando as well that his source is gone and now he has nothing. Oh well!
