Marino suing the NFL over concussions....

This is why Larry Csonka is my all-time favorite Dolphin...if any Dolphin could cry about the hits he took it would be Larry Csonka...but you won't see that because if he is a real man.

If I'm wrong about that in the future....then I have no faith left.
 
i still think concussions have gotten worse with the more advanced the padding and helmets have gotten. go back to leather helmets and smaller padding. I think there will be less hard hits, at least to the head.

This Concussion lawsuit did more to absolutely weary me on the NFL.
I shut off my satellite TV a month or so ago, because it's just not that
important to me anymore. Lots of my passion for the game is gone,
simply because what I remembered is gone.

I'm sort of like the kid that just found out that Santa isn't real.

I'm in favor of that, and I'm not even kidding. We could make a logo freindly leather helmet, and go with that.

You dont' get to be a warrior and enjoy what comes with that, THEN turn around and **** all over it for a couple of bucks.

Dan has always been kinda of an asshole...there are countless stories of his interaction with fans and his notable meltdown on the CBS set....

It will decrease. But far from go away.

As a ex collegiate rugby player concussions exist even without pads.

One good hit even with proper form can create enough whiplash to send the brain smashing into the side of the skull.

Decrease yes, but we are kidding ourselves if 250lbs of muscle smashing into each other for years won't give someone brain damage.
 
Eh, I don't see the problem. The effects of the injury don't show up for decades in some cases. If a doctor determined that symptoms that are showing up now are related to trauma sustained while in the NFL, he qualifies. I doubt he'll be the last to join in "late to the party."
 
I'm with most of you in feeling like its beneath one of our greats to complain about the brutality of the game... We all know what its about from day one. Concussions were downplayed only in comparison to how much attention they get now.. Every practice had someone "getting their bell rung" as the coaches would say.

I did see the following sentence in regard to the article I read: "Marino’s lawsuit seeks medical monitoring and unspecified financial recovery."

I suppose I could forgive him if he's just seeking to cover expenses specifically related to a future occurence of something like Alzheimer's or something that's proven to be brought about from a history of concussions. In other words not seeking some financial gain now, but any future related expenses covered. That's closer to some sort of workers comp... in my mind.

I'm a proponent of it when it comes to long-term, latent damage. If you say you knew that the concussion you sustained back in the 80's would cause you serious health issues now, you're lying. Nobody knew. The claim the NFL players are making is that the NFL began concealing such information from players when they found out about such long-term issues. If that's true, which I have no reason to believe is not considering the huge settlement, then the players are absolutely in the right here.

C'mon dude.....anyone, and I mean anyone who doesn't admit they knew the risks of playing football is being disengious.

When the employer is found negligible, there is financial gain in workers' comp.
 
My concussed days make me flashback to this song for some reason when reading the others that filed along with Marino....

"One of these things is not like the other, one of these things doesn't belong".....

List: The other former players filing suit with Marino are Erik Affholter, Richard Bishop, Bruce Clark, Chris Dugan, Anthony Grant, Mark Green, John Huddleston, Ethan Johnson, LaCurtis Jones, Peter Manning, Moses Moreno, Toddrick McIntosh, Jackie Wallace and Dwight Wheeler.
 
I do recall Dan throwing a TD pass in the face of a blitz playing up in Seattle. He got hammered by one of their best pass rushers (Jerry Porter, I think). He was woozy after that pass and in post game interviews couldn't even remember the play.
He did sustain a concussion on that play, but I dont recall him having any other notable ones during his 17yr career.
These lawsuits are disingenuous IMO, simply because these men knew exactly what they were getting into when they joined the NFL. They each decided that the benefits (fame, financial reward) outweighed the risks. There are very few opportunities in this life to make the kind of money many (not all) of these guys make. And many of these guys also become successful in the business world after football, largely due to social/business contacts made during their playing career. There are many fringe benefits in being a professional athlete or celebrity. In the case of Marino, he had several endorsement deals while he was playing and still does (Nutrisystem). Hard to sympathize with him in this instance.
