Danny can never be wrong! I enjoy all of his posts. No, the girls don't have anything to do with it! He could say, " Marino couldn't shine Chad Henns' shoes" and I probably throw him a thumbs up!
There are examples on both sides, to be fair. Otto Graham, Forrest Gregg and Norm Van Brocklin all flamed out as head coaches, for example, whereas Raymond Berry and Mike Ditka succeeded. Ozzie Newsome has been a spectacular success as a GM after being a HOF tight end whereas Matt Millen -- excellent linebacker -- was Matt Millen -- epic fail GM. There's no one formula.
For what it's worth -- despite his background -- Elway was not considered a mastermind type during his playing days. He was considered a hyper talented, highlight reel type player. Like a better Michael Vick. But he wasn't considered a thinker, and didn't really become a very efficient passer until Mike Shanahan came along. I mean, he didn't even complete 60% of his passes over a season until 1993, when he was 33 years old.
No doubt it helps the marketing of the team to have Dan officially involved again. So, from that perspective it's a clever hire. Well, done all for arriving at the right niche for the guy, imo.
But I would have serious doubts that he would add much to bigger, more central front office role. He hasn't got the intellect for that, by the looks. There's also the issue that if he was given too much profile in the front office, it would actually act as a disincentive to a coach like Harbaugh or (to a lesser degree) a player like Manning. I could see Harbaugh being less interested in a job at Miami where Dan is around to take the fans' attention and be the spiritual figurehead of the team. Jim's ego is not reputed to be small, he's going to want to be the only sheriff with a badge on any team he runs. I imagine he would hate Dan being around in anything other than the sort of capacity they seem to have agreed for him.
So I doubt there's any connection between this hire and Ross reputedly still wanting Harbaugh. As I say, if anything it's a small obstacle.
Examples yes ... but a very strong preponderance of the evidence shows it is much more likely to be a very bad decision. It usually ends up being like the San Fran Mike Singletary disaster.
Big part of the Harbough legend was the swiftness of the San Francisco turnaround. But it should be noted that they had a lot of talent, it was just horribly mismanaged by Mike Singletary. So the great turnaround was really more than just a very good job by Harbaugh.
\And Marino was never considered a mastermind type like Peyton
