Merged: The Official Ryan Grice-Mullen Thread

He runs a 4.36? Damn. I thought he was a 4.5-4.6 guy the way everyone has been saying he's quicker than he is fast.

They have been working out together since Grice-Mullen arrived in early March. Bess helped him learn the playbook, showed him around the facility and the area, helped him hone his routes on the practice field.

No wonder Grice-Mullen hesitated for about two seconds before signing with the Dolphins in January after spending parts of two seasons in the Canadian Football League. He figured it was time to join forces with his friend once more.

Last time they played together, Bess finished with 108 catches for 1,266 yards and 12 touchdowns. Grice-Mullen? He went for 106 catches for 1,372 yards and 13 touchdowns.

As much as I like Davone (and I believe he has been a very good player for us), if RGM pans out why do we keep Bess? The two are very similar in size. Since they are good friends, I know RGM doesn't want to be the reason Bess gets shipped out, but it may work out that way. I think there is an advantage to having a WR that played with your QB in college but I see little added value in having two WRs from the same college team on your squad.

hey off topic but here is a thought... Marshall goes in wildcat and throws to Ronnie brown. Now tell me media would not talk about that for a week.

They are similiar in size and both catch everything, but Mullen is more of a stretch the field make you mise type of guy. Davone is just a monster in the slot.

Why would you get rid of Bess? Yes he will be looking for a new contract next year, but he will be a RFA. The way he played his first two seasons, I don't think the Dolphins front office will have any problem giving him the long term deal he deserves. We are not going to have to break the bank to keep him.

Bess is a great slot/possession receiver for us and the addition of Marshall makes him even better. Realistically, I could see Bess putting up Welker like numbers this season.

Now if RGM pans out, you can keep him also. The Patriots are not going to trade or release Welker just because they have Julian Edelman on the team now.

Look, I am rooting for RGM, but I am not going to blindly think he is going to be just as good as Bess is. Hopefully he can be, but at this moment, I hope he can just contribute as a returner.

Marshall, Bess, Camarillo, Hartline, Grice-Mullen, seems to me like a very solid Group od WRs
I could see them bucking the trend and keeping maybe six receivers this season. I think we will see Turner or Wallace on the team when the season starts.

Atleast Mullen would see time on special teams and contribute on KR/PR duties. I don't remember Turner being able to do that.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Bess and believe he is a most excellent Welker-like slot receiver. If RGM can do that role AS WELL, AND returns kicks better than Bess (who is not a superstar as a KR), then why wouldn't you trade Bess to a receiver-challenged team for a pick to fill another hole on the Phins? When RGM can't tell you in an interview how he is different than Davone maybe there isn't much of a difference between the two.

What I think will happen is that RGM will NOT be the receiver Davone is (thinking if he was, he would have shown it in the CFL) and if he doesn't shine as a KR then he will get cut from the NFL again. If he does pan out then I think the Phins have a hard choice at WR. Who do you cut? Camarillo the man what does not drop passes? Turner? We can't carry everyone on the roster. Gotta make room for the LBs....

RGM is nowhere near the slot receiver Bess is. RGM is good at the Z and can play slot, but not like Bess.

That's what I suspected. Thanks!

Is the "Z" receiver the one normally lined up along a sideline and off the line of scrimmage? The flanker? I am not football-savvy in terms of all the X, Y, Z designators.

Do we currently have a receiver (other than Marshall) who is good at the Z position? Would Hartline be the current Z guy?

RGM is just a different receiver than Bess. They have a lot of similarities as far as age, stats, birthdays and hair, but not the same players on the field. Mullen was used to stretch the field at Hawaii and I don't recall him working the middle of the field. In Hawaii Gryce was the home run threat.

Thinking about it, if they were both on the field at the same time at Hawaii, they would have to be different type of receivers. Thanks for the correction.

My question still remains, if RGM pans out, who is likely to be DTR (Down The Road)?

No offense to his fans, but Turner did not make the field last year on team with serious WR concerns, to me that says a lot. He also can't play ST for crap. The guy can not create separation and people in the media say his desire just is not there.

Fins let go of Murphy and gave his spot to Garner, and they won't be scared of letting go of Turner and giving his spot to a hungry receiver who is willing to leave it all on the field.
