Mock Draft Game: Rounds 1-3

With the 15th pick in the draft, the Lions are proud to select...
Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon

After just missing out on the top two prospects on our board, we are ecstatic to be able to call Stewart one of our own. As the #1 RB in the draft, Stewart is capable of running through and past defenders, and is a sufficient blocker and receiver out of the backfield. Stewart provides another impact player to our dynamic offense, and gives us a much more balanced attack. Stewart is easily the most complete and most talented back we have had since Barry Sanders. It's time for Detroit fans to get excited again!

with the 16th pick in the draft the Arizona Cardinals select.....

Florida DE Derrick Harvey.

We felt we needed to address the DL first and couldnt pass up a talent like Mr. Harvey.
At 6'4 260lbs with a 4.75 40 we hope Derrick will be creating havoc on opposing Qbs.

With the uh 17th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select

Malcolm Kelly Wide Receiver Oklahoma

Now that you’ve been introduced to Malcolm Kelly, let’s discuss why the Minnesota Vikings decided to take his talented Oklahoma receiver. Kelly is tall, physical, and is explosive when he gets the ball in the open field. The Sooners used him as both a possession receiver and a big play threat.

We had no intentions on taking a wide receiver because we didn’t feel like we’d get value at this spot. But when the best receiver in the draft slipped past teams like Buffalo, Carolina and Chicago, we felt we had to pounce on this terrific opportunity.

With the immediate emergence of rookie running back Adrian Peterson, the support from Chester Taylor, and our outstanding run defense, we feel like we are a solid passing game away from competing for an NFC championship. We still feel we need to address the quarterback position as Tarvaris Jackson has struggled, but adding Kelly will help his progression should we decided to start the 2008 season with him as our guy.

The last wide receiver we took in the first round has been very disappointing. Troy Williamson is strictly a deep thread so we feel Kelly will help the 2005 7th overall pick become the player we initially envisioned.

Now for the other options at this spot:

For some reason, there is a myth that our pass defense is horrendous. Fans assume that because our pass defense ranks in the bottom tier each season that is means it’s a weak unit. The truth is that teams would much rather throw on us then try to run the ball against the NFL’s best run defense. We were actually 13th last season in yards per pass attempt and our scoring defense ranked 12th in scoring defense. We still feel we could take a cornerback in this draft as the corner class is the deepest we’ve seen in years, but the true value her was at receiver.

Defensive end was the other position considered but, again, we didn’t think we’d get proper value. Quentin Groves is the guy we were looking at but at 17 we think Kelly is the better value. Our plan is to take a defensive end with our 2nd round pick but we’d also love to make a deal with the Miami Dolphins for Jason Taylor.

With the 18th selection the Huston Texans select Ray Rice from rutgers university

We chose ray rice becasue we feel like he has the most potential out of all of the runningbacks and we love the way he will scrap for extra yards, His college success speaks for itself, He did well in the combine and we were at a need for a franchise rb and we feel like we got him at a steal with the 18th selection

With the 19th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft the Philadelphia Eagles select....

Desean Jackson WR, California University

With this pick the Eagles are killing two birds with one stone. They finally get that dangerous, playmaker that can turn any kick into a touchdown. Many teams will find out just how dangerous he is early on in the season.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Eagles finally get a deep threat. The organization hopes he can come right in and be a true number one receiver for Mcnabb. Jackson has great hands and the ability to turn a 5 yard slant into a 75 yard Touchdown. Definitely something the Eagles have been lacking.

Going into this pick the Bucs feel that they are in a position to grab either an elite WR or HB going into this years draft. Unfortunately, all of the good HBs are taking before this pick, as are the WRs. I really wanted to draft DeSean Jackson here, however he got picked right in-front of my eyes. That being said...

With the 20th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selects Cornerback, Leodis McKelvin from the University of Troy.

First off, We feel that we are getting great value here. Other players may have been picked a little too high, which causes solid players like McKelvin to fall. We will gladly take him with our 20th pick. People may question his college and the level of competition he has faced. We are not afraid, Troy has produced stars such as Osi Umenyiora and DeMarcus Ware; he also held his own at the Senior bowl (despite not playing in the game).

The main reason we picked McKelvin was because he was the BPA. He will help out our aging secondary (Ronde is in his 30's) that could use improvement. In addition to helping our secondary he will be a our starting Kick-off and Punt-returner, which needs improvement.

I tossed and tossed between 2 people, and final came up with the person we will select.

With the 21th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft the Washington Redskins selects Defensive End, Calais Campbell from the University of Miami FL.

CAMPBELLCALAIS150JPG-1.jpg

We make this selection due to the fact that our D Line could not get alot of sacks. We feel Mr. Campbell can come in and cost havac on aposing QBs.

With the 22nd overall pick the Dallas Cowboys select
Cornerback Mike Jenkins-South Florida.

We feel that with Newman on the other side and Jenkins playing opposite him team will be sketchy on going deep. This will play perfectly as we have Roy Williams waiting to wreak havoc in the middle of the field. We believe that Jenkins was the best corner in the draft and our very excited to have in fall in our lap at the 22nd pick

I considered either chris williams OT Vandy or Dominique roger-cromartie CB tenn st. they back are good options here. OT is a need if Max Starks does leave and also a G will be a need if Faneca leaves for FA. but their secondary needs some help especially at CB. Their guy they have their eyes on, is moving up the charts pretty quick, so the steelers are gonna take Dominique Roger-Cromartie CB Tenn St. He is a big playmaker.

With the 24th pick the Titans select Limas Sweed from the university of Texas!

It was a tossup between Sweed and James Hardy, but in the end Sweed won out due to his familarity in working with Vince Young. This combo was dangerous at the college level and should continue this at the pro level. Vince Young needs a true #1 wr to increase their offensive production. We finished 27th in the NFL in passing with 192.3 ypg, and we need a huge upgrade in the passing game in oder to compete for the AFC title.

With the 25th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft the Seattle Seahawks select....
Chris Williams OT Vanderbilt.

The Seahawks were going to go one of two ways with this pick. With all of our top tier running backs off the board, selecting Williams was an easy choice.
Williams is 6'6 and 320 pounds. He is a big athletic tackle who, at times makes things look effortless.
He will need to get stronger and become more aggressive physical but he has all the tools to be a very good LT in the NFL.

With the 26th pick of the 2008 NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select Wide Receiver James HARDY from Indiana University. Terrific size - 6'7", 220lb, 4.5 speed. Playmaker.

His stats include...

2005 - 10 games - 61 receptions - 893 yards - 10 td
2006 - 10 games - 51 receptions - 722 yards - 10 td
2007 - 13 games - 79 receptions - 1125 yards - 16 td

The Jags are desperate for a big game receiver. Hardy fills this need. Their current crop - Wilford, Jones, Broussard, Northcutt & Williams are somewhat average at the best.

Their running game is 1st class, their o'line is very good, & their qb is very very good. Hardy will open up the passing game for the Jags and be the dangerous open field threat that the Jags are missing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnKWmtkf8P4

A somewhat difficult selection as the Jags need a defensive end/tackle as well as receivers. A number of top line defensive linemen were still available, however the Jags believe the draft is quite deep with linemen in 2008 & this will be addressed later in the draft.

As GM AJ Smith, I'd just like to say a nice big "SUCK IT" to Marty Schottenheimer.

This draft puts me at a dilemma. There are no pure free safeties left, nor a good LT prospect, nor a good NT prospect worth the 1st. I'd like to trade down seeing as I have only 1 pick until the 5th round but seeing as I can't, the San Diego Chargers will select OT Gosder Cherilus from Boston College

410w-1.jpg

I would've preferred a free safety to push McCree out or a NT prospect to backup Williams. Most consider Cherilus a RT not LT, which is what we need, but with Olivea underperforming, we could also use a good run-blocking RT. And we'll see in the workouts whether he can top McNeill and replace him at LT even. Good, strong, powerful, and great intangibles. Comes from a program known for producing NFL offensive linemen. Should at least start at RT. I was also considering Reggie Smith and Dan Conner. Smith is a bit of a tweener and better off at strong safety or CB. Conner looks intriguing but I like our LB core as it is for now.

With the 28th pick in the first round the Cowboys select
Felix Jones Runningback-Arkansas...After being Darren's backup we feel like he can come in and play the same role with Marion. Felix is a very fast back but also one that can break a few tackles on the way to the endzone

With the 29th selection the San Francisco 49ers select Quentin Groves, DE/OLB, Auburn.

Well I could have went several ways with this pick but Groves seems like the perfect fit for the 49ers. Drafting defensive Rookie of the year Patrick Willis in last years draft the 49ers look to bolster their LB corps by drafting Groves, a versatile player with outstanding playmaking ability. Groves has the potential to be a fantastic player in the NFL.
