The Miami front office has become like the KGB of the NFL. Total lockdown on information. Misdirection and false information is abundant. Then like a bolt of lightning, BAM, they hit you with a nugget of news.

As for Gesicki, he'll get a very nice payday on the open market. I'm not sure how Flores views him, but again, this all could be another misdirect? I'd love to see him finish his career in Miami, but I've been residing on the real possibility he's not going to be here past 2021. Can't sign everyone. I think Miami knows he's going to bring back a very nice comp pick, and is playing this according to the NE playbook.

i'm confident the cap will be high enough that we can resign anyone we care to resign.

cheaper is better, and it takes 2 to tango on a contract.

Everyone is assuming MG wants an early extension. That may not be the case.

He may want to see what kind of offers he can get in FA.
 
If we want to resign Mike, we will. We have PLENTY of room under the cap to sign him... and no one really knows which way we are leaning here.

I like that.

No... I LOVE that! The fact that our team can make it's business decisions in private is a great sign of strength. Just look at the media blackout with regard to X. THAT is a much larger problem and yet, we are saying nothing to the press and keeping all of our options open. That's the way it should be.

Hopefully if they are waiting to offer him a new contract after the season, they aren’t expecting other teams to offer him a low ball contract. Based on how the Dolphins were outbid for Charles Clay when he was a free agent and the Dolphins were hoping to resign him. I think Gesicki will likely get a very solid offer from teams interested in his specific skill set.

Whether that skill set is what Flores is looking for long term at the TE position will be determined over the next 9 months. The Dolphins will either sign him to a new contract, franchise him after the season
or just let him walk and hopefully get a draft pick in compensation if he signs with another team.

i think this is a big advantage.

we have two seasons to play with, and a burgeoning cap.

i don't see Mikey going anywhere until 2023 at the earliest.

Today's tight end isn't a blocking machine. Tell me which all pro tight end out there makes mesmerizing blocks? No, the all pro tight ends are known for catching the ball, and spend a very small amount of snaps actually blocking.

Dude, you really have no idea what you're talking about. Today TE's are blocking machines. George Kittle is know as a Blocking beast. When Tampa faced Washington in the play-offs Gronk spent a fair amount of time blocking Chase Young. Gronk even blocked Chase 1v1 a few times with no problem. I played TE in college and I don't have to the time to explain why TE's that can block are 20 times more useful than ones that can't. One major reason is hiding the play call.

You need to watch a lot more film on today's TEs.

Possible, but not only does that usually result in animosity for the player, I also don't see the point, in general.

We would have to pay (relatively) top $ to retain MG. If we feel he is an integral part going forward, why not just give him a contract? If not, why tie up that cap money, unless we are just buying time for Long to develop.

We all know Flores and his staff is good at developing players. I am going to bet they knew about his bad blocking and figured they’d be able to coach him which just isn’t the case here. This regime doesn’t waste time so in comes Long. Pretty much what is happening. Maybe this season MG turns into a better blocker. Wait and see

It gives us more time to negotiate a contract. Also if things don't work out we can work out a trade.

I said this in a previous thread but I'm a big fan of the Long pick. I don't think he was deliberately drafted as a Gesicki replacement though. I think he was just too much value to pass up in the third round.
