I apologize for being as harsh as I was. I set the tone for the escalation. I truly apologize for that, you really didn't deserve my retort.

Gesicki is 26 this year...

Gesicki is just getting to the age where Tight Ends tend to explode. As you can see, his TD numbers are already higher than the competition managed in their similar seasons. The folks who scuff their toes and say, "but he don't block much", are completely missing the point, he isn't being asked to block... he's a slot TE. If we let him go, he'll go to a passing circus team (like the Chiefs) and flirt with leading the league.

He led the Dolphins in TDs last year, and was second in targets and yardage to DVP. The Dolphins are NOT going to suddenly say... well, he led the team in TDs last year, let's shut him down. I mean... c'mon, that's just stupid.

Will he become Gonzo (who mostly worked out of the slot), or Gates? Doubtful... but only because of the fact that those two guys may have been the best TEs in history... and yeah, comparing anyone to a first ballot Hall of Famer is not going to go well for them.

Reasonable take. The problem with Gesicki isnt that he cant block, its that the fact he cant block has him competing with different players. This really hasnt been a problem lately because the WR depth in Miami as been very week while he was here and most of them have been injury prone on top of it. I dont think there's ever been a game where Gesicki wasnt at least a top 3 receiving option on the active roster for the Fins so the fact he couldnt block was moot, just use him as a WR.

This year, the Fins will be much stonger in the WR room, at least initially with everyone healthy. I dont know that Gesicki is a better option between the 20s than Parker, Fuller, Wilson or Waddle. So what happens is he's definitely going to lose some snaps in there as the team will still need some blocking competence at the TE position on most plays. Gesicki will need to battle to avoid becoming a situational player in here, something he might not have to do elsewhere.

It'll all be about how situational he becomes in Miami VS how many teams are willing to pay him for a more prominent role(I bet his agent has a decent idea of what he could get on the open market at this point).
 
I absolutely LOVE MG and want him here.

But, sadly, I don't see it with this coaching staff.

I think if we're using the NE model as a comparison he'd be our version of the late "Aaron Hernandez."

So where's our Gronk?

You absolutley can win multiple chips with Gronk. But can you win them with A.Hernandez?

I've heard that take, but I generally reject it for a couple of reasons... the main one being that Gesicki only saw a 58% snap count last year... in other words... he was already being used in this manner.

Because he is not the 90% snap count guy that some Y-style TEs are, he is in on the passing downs where he becomes an ENORMOUS mismatch with possibly the largest catch radius in the division. Plus, by playing fewer downs, he is obviously less of an injury risk.

He's always been a slot type TE... which is where most of the modern greats have done their best work. It's an anecdotal thing, but I remember when a couple of the FFLs started calling Tony Gonzales a WR because he lined up outside so often. Heh! I had a fit because I had him, but that only lasted a year or so and his status returned to Tight End.

The Patriots are another example... Gronk and Hernandez... and they both worked a lot.

The idea that 'now we have a real slot receiver', so we'll use less TE slot plays is a non-starter because of the size that a slot TE gives you, especially when their hands are as good as Mike's are.

I expect his catches and TDs to go UP this year, although his targets may not. He'll be a LOT more open with Fuller in and Grant out, and with Waddle in and with Bowden out.

In my mind (a scary place), Long's job this year is only to replace Smythe. Take on the y-type snaps (42%) that Smythe contributed while providing a bit more after the catch than Smythe did (effectively zero). If he can do that, as a third round pick, then he'll be doing great.

I don't expect to see him out wide much, and as I've said previously... if camp sees him out wide more often than occasionally, then I will backtrack on this and admit to being wrong. I just don't see Long as Gesicki's replacement.

MG is going to get a huge payday - deserved or not - a la Charles Clay. I doubt we pay him what his market value will command.

He's an UFA next year and another team will be willing to pay him more money than we can offer for a one dimensional TE. If we see him gelling with the QB, receivers and OL then we could offer him an extension during the '21 season but that could also backfire if he pulls X if we offer Hunter Long more money a few years down the line. The players seem to be gaining all the leverage with, "give me an extension or I won't play" or "give me a better contract or I won't play." I know Gesicki hasn't done any and I didn't even think about his contract until the media stirred it up.

I agree that Long isn't a replacement for Gesicki. And if he happens to have an amazing year inside and even shining outside, what a great "problem" to have a la the PATS with Gronk and Hernandez (minus the murdering of course).
