The Dolphins haven’t been happy with Rishard Matthews for tardiness, lack of attention to detail and other issues --- one reason why they used a second-round pick on Jarvis Landry instead of being content with Matthews as their fourth receiver. Matthews admits it surprised him that Miami drafted two receivers (Landry and Matt Hazel).

But Matthews tells us he hopes a recent meeting with Joe Philbin cleared things up. “I had some [missteps] my first couple years being young,” he said. “They want me to be more professional off the field, as well as on the field. That’s part of maturing. Little stuff, maybe being late to a couple of meetings. Coach Philbin sat down with me and gave me the ropes. We’re definitely on the same page.”

Even though Matthews has been productive, those ancillary issues have left him battling Armon Binns (who has looked very good), Damian Williams and former running back Marcus Thigpen for the fifth receiver job, barring injuries. Matthews has one less ally here with Jeff Ireland’s departure.

I think the 4th and 5th receiver spots are gonna be absolute wars once training camp starts.

Finally we have a reason why Matthews is in the dog house as opposed to people just saying Philbin sucks b/c he doesn't like Matthews for any particular reason.

The 5th guy might have to be a good returner since thigpen is now a WR and might be on the outs. I can't see Landry doing kick returns maybe punts. So we need a kick returner

I knew Matthews was having mental lapses when last season he kept getting pulled off the field after every play.
He would go directly to the coach, and the coach would be explaining what was going on. This happened after almost every play.

It sucks, because football skill wise, he's freaking really good. But mentally, he just doesn't seem to have it.

Thigpen should be gone , he has faded as a returnman and as a wr or rb he is not nfl worthy

I think this season we might actually be keeping six receivers on the final 53 man roster. Wallace, Hartline, Gibson and Landry are locks for the top 4 spots. I do think Matthews sticks around as the #5, and the battle for #6 is going to have a tough decision. Hazel, Binns, Damian Williams, and I wouldn't even be surprised if Stephen Williams seriously got into the mix.

I think it is amazing how in just two years our wide receivers corps has gone from arguably the league's worst to one of the deepest positions on the team.

I ripped Philbin for this earlier. Now I see that I was wrong.

Mathews is on notice. Either he takes this criticism and makes some serious adjustments or he fails. He may be talented, but if can't progress further there are plenty of others waiting to take his place.

I am rooting for him to "man up".

I wonder if this is his way of thinking there are too many solid WR's on this team, and that there's no way he can move up, no matter how good he is. Maybe he wants a trade. Wouldn't think it's that far fetched. I mean, i think he could easily be the number 3 guy on other teams...like the jets or raiders, for example.

I agree we Nublar, I'm pretty confident the number in this offense will be 6 wr. We mostly agree on the top 4. I'll take Matthews and Hazel as 5 and 6. Binns passing Matthews would not shock me At All, as Matthews may be too similar to Gibson and Landry. One other variable could be the savings of cutting Gibson, which I am too lazy to dig up.

I think cutting gibson would save us 1.5 million this year

Kind of reminds you of the Packers during their SB season. I think that's a Philbin effect.
