Philbin has sit down meeting with Matthews

Matthews already catches the highest percentage of balls thrown to him on the team already. So if this is without showing up to meetings or paying attention in them damn imagine the potential.

We've got a bit of a logjam in the slot with three shifty-but-not-speedy, 6', sure-handed, tough receivers- Gibson, Landry and Matthews. We know Lazor wants his pieces to move around, so the guys who stick will be the guys who are versatile and can absorb a playbook that asks them to play an expanded route-tree from the slot and the perimeter (we can only assume).

I'm a fan of all three guys, but I'm a bigger fan of touchdowns. We need our offense to churn out an extra TD per game and it could be that we need more diversity in our WR roster than keeping these three similar skillsets. If we don't, I won't be one bit disappointed, but we better score more.

I think we keep 3 RBs (not sure who yet but guess Moreno, Miller and Williams) plus 1 on PS (Gillislee if eligible vs. Darkwa perhaps)
I think we keep 3 TEs (Sims, Lynch and Egnew/Hoskins/Miller)
1 HB (Clay)
So there's probably room there for 6 WRs and one or even two on PS. I don't see Thigpen sticking any longer but I don't see an obvious KR candidate beyond him, so maybe he squeezes in at the expense of a WR.

I think the 4th and 5th receiver spots are gonna be absolute wars once training camp starts.

had ARMON BINNS not had the injury in late camp last year, mathews would have rarely seen the field if at all.

NO ONE could cover binns last year and he is looking the same already this year. i think what will happen [unless binns has another set back] is mathews will be traded to a team needing wr's for a lower round pic or guard. they will tell him that a change of venue will help and he has a new start, a clean slate to go with his new found "maturity".

both binns and and landry are far better wr's. just because philbin had a lil heart to heart with mathews doesnt mean there going to throw their gifted second round wr to the practice squad and tell landry, "well, we have mathews back, we had a talk and were going with him for now"....... . landry was mathews ticket out of town and/or insurance for brandon gibson should he not be able to play.

i really dont see mathews being on the team at end of camp. and maybe a change of venue will help him. he has the talent, he just needs a little bit more football and a little less gangsta.

Binns hasn't yet proven it over a full season in the white-hot game environment. The reason for that is he's injured so much. So you're gambling Matthews' maturity against Binns' durability. Much as I like Matthews, instinctively I would like Binns to be winning that matchup. But a WR on Injured Reserve is a lot less useful than one who can't remember where he's supposed to line up half the time, but who still make some good catches!

The ligament tears are his third big injury in about 3 years.

If we keep 4 TE's, and that appears to be a strong possibility, its going to be difficult to justify carrying 6 WR's on the 53 man roster.

Thigpen shifted to WR from RB. Philbin has sit down with Matthews.

Seems obvious to me Matthews is getting the benefit of the doubt and Thigpen is on notice. Seems Philbin is trying to light a fire under his preferred WR in Matthews.

We'll keep at least 5 WR this year. And I wouldn't be surprised if Daniel Thomas is cut in favor of WR6.
Thigpen shifted to WR not sure where you got the RB part. Hes a WR

Hope he gets his act together. Would LOVE a WR group of Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Landry, Mathews and Binns.

That group has the potential to be one of the best in the league, and certainly the best I can remember as a fan.

I think this year we keep 6 receivers. Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Landry, Matthews, and Binns or Hazel. All these guys for the exception of Wallace can do a lot of different things which is what the coaches want from their receivers. Lots of talent in the group.

Can keep only 2 QB's or only 3 RB's

The fifth receiver maybe but Landry, Gibson, Wallace and Hartline are the top 4 receivers.

Agreed, unless Gibson is unable to get on the field (doubtful), the only chance for the remaining WR will be #5.

The 5th guy might have to be a good returner since thigpen is now a WR and might be on the outs. I can't see Landry doing kick returns maybe punts. So we need a kick returner

I think if Binns looks as good as he did last year in pre-season, he is going to get the 5th position. I hate to say this, but it very well may be Landry on punts.

Look a lot of football players are dumb, is teams cut every player because they weren't smart they would have a terrible team. Some of the best football players in the world aren't the smartest people. Wasn't there a story out there that a WR had to ask the QB where to go before every play... and that WR was pretty damn good? I can't recall the names. Anyway my point is this... it's obvious this kid can play as he made some good plays when he was on the field. You don't cut or trade that.... you COACH IT! I'm glad philbin is giving him a chance to correct his behavior that's called coaching. Some players mature and grow up over time... Micheal Irvin, Chris Carter, Randy Moss... this list goes on and on. People need to understand that and work with it. Not get rid of it.

We can only keep 6 receivers if at least 2 of them are really effective on special teams, and not just as a returner. Marlon Moore is gone and he was an excellent gunner/tackler

Mathews is the candidate for a training camp trade, hopefully a LB to provide depth.
