The only bad result would be a sack resulting in a fumble or an interception that would have had to be returned all the way for a score.

Agreed. But as it turned out even a 9-7 halftime deficit would have been insurmountable. So the performance of the team in the 2nd half was more responsible for the defeat than Philbin's strategy and the end of the 1st half.
What was really insurmountable was the loss of Moreno: his leadership, running, ball security, receiving ability, etc.
