that doesn't matter...had manning decided to come here i guarantee the plan would be win now...not build thru the draft...and if we told manning that the plan was to build thru the draft why even talk to him...waste of time...like he wants to go to a rebuilding team...i sure hope ireland and ross were smart enough to tell peyton you come here and we'll go all in on winning NOW

we even waited around on manning to make up his mind before we made commitments financially in free agency...don't trip...the plan was win now if manning came here...
Plan wouldnt change only difference would be we would have signed some of Manning's OLD friends

No you are not getting it, he made a statement about Philbin choosing players, we were talking about FA in a recent FA pickup thread.... thats it, end of story. If you want to talk about the draft, I try to discuss it in threads about a draft. I have a lot of issues with us depending on the draft for starters, but thats a different issue.

When I questioned Nubs about who he liked who we picked up, he didn't have anyone he wanted to bring to the table so he said DRAFT. That wasn't what the conversation was about. Now you are telling me what was on his mind? whatever....its not what he said when I commented. Everything you came up with in the past 2 posts you just conjured up on what you think. Now after I provided a quote on where this started, you continue to make up a story of what he meant? So Nubs saying that maybe Philbin is telling guys he WANTS, becomes " I think nubs was merely saying irelands not just going out signing every scrub under the sun and dumping them on philbin, that they're bringing in these players together. "

That's some stretch.

Im telling u what I got out of what nublar said...it makes sense to me and talking about the plan for the draft has everything to do with who we've targeted in free agency.

i will say this though...when we were sniffing up peyton mannings craw the plan sure didn't seem to be build thru the draft...it sure looked like compete now to me...otherwise sniffing him makes no sense anyways

of course the plans the draft when you have failed in your pursuits elsewhere...it's a convenient built in answer

I said this back then, even though I was on board with landing manning at the time, that I think manning was all stephen ross. I think philbin wanted to install his own system and ross wanted to make good on his promise of getting a franchise qb and selling seats. Just my opinion though.

Well, if you got it from the first thing I commented on...you made up everything yourself. If he says Ireland is listening to Philbin in FA, that means nothing about the draft. Don't care what you think he means or anything else.

ok so ross was the manning pushing guy...who can blame him...ross wants to win now...peyton manning can provide that...ireland more than philbin probably would like the time to develop a qb for 2 years before he has to make good on the pick in the draft...it buys more time...but manning healthy provides job security also given the jump any team takes with a qb of his caliber...

the plan with steven ross was peyton manning...only after that fell thru could this build thru the draft stuff commense...

Gotta love the typical "Not a splash signing" comments. At this point in Free Agency, how many players would be considered a splash signing?

Having Manning means you try to win now, its the only way- he doesn't have time to wait. But I believe he was the only guy for that plan, without him they had to do it the traditional way.
And if the plan is to build through the draft, then that means free agency is never going to excite anyone.
And signing a bunch of 2nd-tier veterans with specific roles and minimum contracts is how they have been doing it in New England for over a decade

And that's the typical Green Bay West Coast offense. Go back to Mike Holmgren's staff in 1996. The monumental collection of coaching talent that fell off that tree has been pretty consistent in their philosophy about WRs. Every now and then they will have an elite WR1. But for the most part, it relies on disciplined WRs that run great routes and execute. They don't have "me" players at WR. They work as a unit.

Honestly, the WCO maximizes our existing talent at WR and helps us moving forward by devaluing the elusive WR1 that always comes with baggage. I'm kinda glad we have a bunch of WR2's in this system.

When we hired Philbin, I felt great. I wanted him as a caoch. And, at first, I wanted Flynn. But I am more interested in us getting a great QB that fits us. I don't care how we get him. I don't care if Matt Moore becomes him.

I just know that the QB is the single most important piece in this WCO. But not like Peyton Manning important. Now, it's more about everyone doing their job. And not just relying on one or two guys to carry the load.

Unless we get a great QB, most fans outside of Phinland won't be able to list most of our players by name. And honestly, the way we draft it's for the better. We are probably one of the most boring teams to watch on draft day. We are the "UnSexy".
So true so true. I mean QBs and WRs are not really important at all in the WCO. SF is where it started and they had two WRs in John Taylor and Jerry Rice that probably wouldn't have been able to start for anyone else in the league, and they had those two bums under center, first Joe Montana then Steve Young. With them having success with Canadian league talent like that we should be winning mutiple superbowls with super stars like Naanee, and Hartline. This is definitely the signing that puts us over the top. Who needs Reggie Wayne??

Philbin said that he wants to build through the draft and doesn't plan to use free agency to build the team. This isn't guessing or speculation, this came straight from his mouth.
Well if that is the case and we keep Ireland around strap em up tight, because we are going to be looking back on the last 5 years as the GLORY YEARS!!! If Naanee is the one this fanbase is supposed to get excited over, OR if we are supposed to get excited over anyone Ireland drafts we are in serious trouble. In NASCAR a driver has to maintain a certain speed or be asked to leave the track for "lack of competition". The way this franchise is heading we will be asked to pack a bag pretty soon...

Good article but I think they do WAAAY to much to build him up. He is not nearly as good as the statement "one of the worst WRs in football last year" would lead you to believe. On a brighter note, however, he does seem to get in trouble alot, so when he gets kicked off the team it will give us all something to get happy about for at least one day....

Nowhere did either of us say anything about the draft until I questioned what FA you liked that was brought in. I asked a simple question, you went your own way with it while changing the subject. We all know he wants to build through the draft, that wasn't what we were talking about.

The point I was trying to make is that the reason there are no "splash" signings or big names is because the philosophy has changed. You are concerned because of the type of guys Philbin wants to bring in, my argument is that the guys they are bringing in(for the most part) are not intended to be starters or Pro Bowl players. They are meant to beef up the depth and fill some back end holes. It has nothing really to do with Philbin wanting bad players or low key free agents, it is about filling in some holes while building the main part of the roster through the draft.

That was the point of my post, never really meant this to turn into a serious of explanation posts.
