Rank Tannehill Among Young QB's?

The reason that they are bizarre is that there are no former players, coaches, scout, and anyone with any credibility doing the evaluations.

Are you sure? Where are you getting the info about who is doing the analysis?

Tannehill ranked 7th in passes 11-20 yards with a PFF grade of 8.0 and a passer rating 79.6, they have him ahead of 7 QBs with a passer rating 100+, and they have Aaron Rodgers 19th on the list with a PFF grade 1.1 and a passer rating of 132. The great Aaron Rodgers whose passer rating is second in that category yet PFF has him ranked as 19th best? Bizarre.

Why is that bizarre? Passer rating is heavily influenced by TDs and INTs. PFF is looking at the contribution of the QB on the play. If a QB throws a crappy pass just beyond the LOS that is brought in by a miraculous catch by the WR then run 80 yards for a TD, his stats are inflated despite the fact that his contribution to the play was bad.

Bad? He made the correct decision and that decision resulted in a TD, how in the hell is that bad?

Second of all the 11-20 yard category refers to balls thrown 11-20 yards in the air, if you want to take "lucky" TDs out of the equation Rodgers completion percentage was 64% vs Tannehill's 54%. Yeah, yeah, one has better 11-20 yard receivers, blah, blah, blah.

I was hoping for something easier than what some QB's did between 11-20 yards. :) I think it was based on what a QB did individually as opposed to what the team did.

As far as I know, that is fairly accurate. To apply to PFF, they send you a game film to grade to start, If you pass the test and are eventually added, you start with snap counts for players, and then on to grading depending on how you do.

So all completed passes are thrown equally well in your opinion? You can tell exactly how well the QB played by looking at the box score? No poorly thrown balls that are caught? No well thrown passes that are dropped? Okay sure.....

Strange that many find fault with PFF but, not with the NFL QB ratings who have Dalton and Cutler over Brady and Luck, Fitzpatrick and Glennon over Tannehill, and Manuel and Henne over Flacco.

What is the difference?

I view QB ratings and other stats the same way as I look at PFF. They are all useful but it's foolish to look at just one and make a judgment off of it.

Because the difference between 88 and 87 isn't much for one season. Tom Brady's passer rating for his career is much higher than Dalton's and he has several seasons with 100+ passer rating. Everybody above about 87 or 88 had a good season, everybody above 100 had a great season, and everybody with 2 seasons over 100+ is a great QB, most in this category are hall of famers and Super Bowl MVPs.

Its pretty well know that fans make up the analyst positions that grade the players over at PFF. They aren't even paid analysts. Its strictly voluntary. Its not former players, coaches, or scouts. You probably get fans that are very passionate about the game and enjoy doing what they do, but like I said in a previous post, as soon as you add the human element to the data, you can end up with very misleading rankings/grades.

The difference is that in QB ratings, every QB is measured the same way. You can compare apples to apples with QB ratings.

Not really, it is assuming every situation is the same. the TD thrown trailing by 28 pts late ion the 4th is treated the same as the TD in the final minute to take the lead.

There are literally hundreds of variables you could factor in....weather, defense, supporting cast, which down is it, was he under pressure, ect. But its not necessary because you can go back and view historical QB ratings and its been a pretty accurate representation of general QB skills.

we can assume that w/o having seen them but I see QBs w/ great ratings in this era who I don't think are great(or even good in some cases) QBs.

Ok but we are discussing the difference between the QB rating - an official stat, versus the PFF ratings, which are based on somebody grading a QB based on their own perceptions of what is going on.
