This is off topic but pre-2008 I didn't follow offseasons at all, sometimes I had no idea who our coach or QB was going to be but always watched every game and week one truly believed we had as much shot to win a championship as anybody.
Now I have evolved, I know the roster inside and out and follow the team almost 365 days a year. With the new found information I can more accurately predict our chances at winning, and I definitely do not believe its 32-1 anymore.
So was I a better fan then when I followed the team less but had a more optimistic outlook, or am I a better fan now, spending 1000s of extra hours per year following the team and the league in general, but have a more pessimistic outlook?
The definition is plain...I didn't create it.
I follow them all year long as well, and have a more positive outlook. Maybe its because I'm naturally an optimistic person and have a strong faith that people can overcome things, given my life's evolution. I don't see the enjoyment of predicting the worst just so I can say "I told you so" when it happens. It's much more relaxing to just have the faith that they'll do better and hope for the best...nobody wants to fail, why should I expect or want them to? I love this team, and have for 40 years, and have they disappointed my expectations? Sure as hell have, but so what? Did it hurt my family? Did it cause me physical or financial harm? Not in the slightest.
They haven't won the super bowl since before I knew what the Miami Dolphins were. Will they win one before I pass on? Who knows...I don't really care. I'd love to see it, but in the long run, it doesn't really matter...it's a small satisfaction. The Marino years were FAR more painful to me than sending out a consistent 7-9/8-8 team from a disappointment standpoint. Don't get me wrong, I loved watching the guy sling it. At least during the past few years, there's at least a chance they can overcome expectations and do something special...even if it DOESN'T end in a ring. Marino's Dolphins were CONSTANTLY predicted to win the Super Bowl, and never did, so which is the bigger disappointment?
Michael Thomas made the season for me last year in the last series of the Pats @ Dolphins game. That was the best feeling I've had watching them since the fake spike, I doesn't matter they didn't win the Super Bowl, even if it was a disappointment they missed the playoffs the way they did.
Nothing in this life will EVER give you 100% satisfaction and enjoyment, especially when that thing is completely outside your control. I'd love them to win the Super Bowl 5 or 6 times, hell, every year for a decade, but that's simply not realistic for any team. As long as the Michael Thomas' do what they do and I can gain some excitement and satisfaction from it, what more can I ask? As long as they give it an honest effort and try, and not quit, I'm a fan.
