Salguero: Ross may hire football czar

Bill Polian is ancient and thought Landry Jones was one of the best QB's in last year's draft...

I could rally behind Dan Marino.

Mangini is brilliant. Pioli could give good direction. Dungy is not coming.

losing respect for you at a rapid pace...

1. Just had three…count them…three former Browns picks go all-pro
2. Some the Jets best players are still his draft picks.
3. He selected Darrell Revis
4. Always had a defensive schemes that befuddled Tom Brady
5. Tell me you were not impressed with his media work when talking football. He converted me.

FINALLY…he outed the Pats as cheaters. I will always be grateful.

A GM needs to be hired who can determine talented players and is on the same page with the coaching staff. We don't have that. GM should be in service of the head coach and fireable by the head coach. We don't have that. Head coach should be the Czar.

I like he hates the Pats but a 33 and 47 record doesn't equate to czar.

I'm surprise for the lack of love for Tony Dungy. This would be my choice. I think he knows football, has integrity and will command respect immediately. Unfortunately a don't think it happens for two reasons. one, Don't think he be interested and two: no good moves are done in this organization, and this would be one.

Okay, ive let this run its course, but im blowing this up now.

Jets drafts under Mangini(im not going to bother with the 10-22 Browns under him):
2006-
1) D'Brickashaw Ferguson
1) Nick Mangold
2) Kellen Clemens
3) Anthony Schlegel
3) Eric Smith Safety
4) Brad Smith
4) Leon Washington
5) Jason Pociask
6) Drew Coleman
7) Titus Adams

2007-
1) Darrelle Revis
2) David Harris
6) Jacob Bender
7) Chansi Stuckey

2008-
1) Vernon Gholston
1) Dustin Keller
4) Dwight Lowery
5) Erik Ainge
6) Marcus Henry
7) Nate Garner

Notable free agents:
Thomas Jones, cost a 2nd round pick and 4 years/$20 million
Alan Faneca, 5 years/$40 million
Calvin Pace, 6 years/$42 million
Damien Woody, 5 years/$25.5 million
Brett Favre, 3rd round pick
Kris Jenkins, 3rd and 5th round pick

Sure, theres some good moves in there, but they were was a whole lot of mistakes in there as well. A lot of Mangini's mid-round picks(while they performed solidly for awhile) are out of the league. Vernon Gholston is considered to be one of the biggest busts in draft history. A lot of his "good moves" didnt have nearly as good as they could have been. Youve heaped lavish praise on him for Ferguson, the 4th overall pick, but how about Andre Whitworth, a player of roughly equal talent who was taken a whole round later by the Bengals? How about Marcus McNeil, who was considered one of the better left tackles in the league before a random neck injury forced him into retirement? Jahri Evans, a 5 time pro-bowler taken in the 4th? And thats just the lineman, in that same draft they took Leon Washington(a damned fine but limited player) 2 picks ahead of Brandon Marshall.

Pace was a solid player but never lived up to his contract. Jenkins was only healthy for 1 of his 3 years there. Favre was a disaster and didnt come close to the impact his predecessor made that season(as we know). Thomas Jones was a fine player, but a second round pick for an aging running back? What?

Value ****ing matters. I say it over and over again but people dont seem to get it. Its simply not that difficult to find 32 players worth drafting in a class of hundreds. Hitting on first round picks should be a given, not something to praise. Teams are built in the mid rounds, finding talent that falls for various reasons and building depth. And Mangini largely failed there. And thats just the on paper roster moves. While he was in New York, Mangini alienated his players, created a culture of paranoia, and outright cheated. As your praising Mangini for turning in the Patriots, you seem to forget that Mangini doctored Brett Favre's injury reports for the last 5 games of the season. One of those games was against us. The Jets were fined $125k for that stunt.

Not getting all the value you can, missing on mid round picks, creating a dysfunctional environment, throwing excessive resources at the offensive line, and putting their team in cap hell...been there, done that. Sure, because some of the players are simply better, its a bit different. But its not any sort of legitimate, lasting improvement. Mangini isnt some genius, he's a very slightly more competent Jeff Ireland.

I think there are some really good players there. Thanks for laying them out. I am not sure if you expect the guy to hit 1.000. It is not going to happen. However, he has some players that have had long, productive careers. Again, thanks for laying it out for everyone.

if its marino it could be a good thing for the franchise
