Salguero: Ross will add franchise QB and superstar coach in 2012

It's already been reported that Ross is interested in Cowher. He was contacted during the whole Harbaugh saga and indicated his preference to remain out of coaching for another year. It was recently reported (by Barry Jackson, I believe), that Cowher is very high on Ross' list going forward.
I hope so. Out of the "big names", even when it looked like Gruden was still an option, Cowher was always my #1.

Couple things...

1. We do have talent on this team. They may not be coached properly and we may not have depth, but we have talent. Honestly, look at a team like the Lions who have added talent since Schwartz became HC, but they had talent before that. Or look at the 9ers with Harbaugh. They have had talent there for awhile but just could never put it together. We need somebody that can put it together.

2.I think Ross has always got it. People hate on him for trying to make the Dolphins flashy and a big deal in Florida. I can't hate him for that, he's trying to make money. But with him not making moves earlier, when he got majority control of the franchise, we were coming off of an 11-5 year, why make huge changes after that? I think Ross is a good enough guy for giving Sparano 2 more years to prove himself. And as much as I hated to admit or see it, Ross was setting up this year to be a failure in order to start fresh next year. Once he couldn't get Harbaugh, Cowher, or Gruden last year (in hindsight) it was easy to see that he wanted to get his guys in place and make the Fins his team.

It doesn't fit with what direction Ross wants to take this franchise in though. Ross wants exciting, up tempo, and wide open. He wants to abandon the philosophy we have had in place over the past 15 years where we lean on a strong defense, run the ball, and simply get by with a game manager at quarterback. The latter is EXACTLY what we get with Bill Cowher. He's going to come in and preach defense first, strong running game, and don't turn the ball over. There is nothing in Cowher's history that suggests he will be wide open on offense or put a lot on his quarterback's shoulders.

I still think Gruden is an option, and if he turns us down, Miami needs to go with a quarterback centric minded head coach.

what if that football person is Carl Peterson?
It most likely is Peterson unless the new coach is Cowher. I am sure it has been established that Cowher wants final say.

wow ross wants a franchise qb? ummm, join the club, so does every other team in the league who doesn't have one.

Cowher went to a wide open offense for a year with Tommy Maddox. When it didn't work out (6-10 record), they drafted Roethlisberger and switched back to a run first mentality as he developed. But in Cowher's last year in Pittsburgth, Ben Roethlisberger attempted 469 passes in 15 games, which is right in line with his numbers since Cowher left.

I think you're letting your assumptions about Cowher's approach and reputation get in the way of the facts a little bit here. I don't consider myself all in on any of these coaches -- I'm much more inclined to go the "football czar" approach -- but I don't think Cowher being as high on Ross's list as he appears to be is in contradiction with what Ross is trying to achieve. As I recall there was even a quote a few weeks back that said that Cowher only wanted to go to a team that had it's quarterback situation sorted out, which indicates to me the importance he places on the position. As much as I like Jeff Fisher, I think he is much more of a contradiction philosophically than Cowher would be. Fisher imo is going to be the head coach of Jacksonville once this is all over.

As I've said many times, if we get the #1 overall pick it's not going to matter nearly as much who the head coach is. But a guy who's been as open minded as Cowher has been throughout his career (which I don't think it's debatable that he has been) I think is smart enough to hire a guy to run a progressive offense and then stay the hell out of it. Hopefully he'd dedicate most of his efforts to hiring a guy like Keith Butler to run our defense.

The NFL network reported this morning the Ross was "quoted as saying" these things. It sounds more like 3rd party heresay to me.

Awesome if true, but this is Armando we're talking about.

I bet the jets are in the market for the new QB next offseason. Lose tonight and they join the Luck race.
Nubs dont you realize you just set us up for a half page post on how awesome Mark is and how he led his team to 2 AFC Championships?

Eh. The longer the jets think Sanchez is a franchise qb the better it is for the rest of the afc east. I say let them spout off how great they think Sanchez is. The longer he's a jet the better

Please nubs do not wake them up from their dream that Sanchez is a franchise QB.

Honestly all we need is Luck. He will change everything for us........everything. Im gald to know Ross is starting to get it though. No more science projects. I would trade all 7 picks for the next 2 years to get Luck. It would be well worth it.....
