Second Guessing Hickey?

You assume those players even wanted to play in Miami....

No assumption on Collins or Verner, who both said they wanted to come here. Don't know on Asamoah, Schwartz, Beadles, or Safford. Streiff did definitely not want to, as I read where Hickey almost begged him to come in for a visit.

Not true. Almost everyone had Monroe at #1, and then it got to a choice of risk/reward between Veldheer, Collins and Albert.

There was only 1 team that offered him a contract. There wasn't much demand for Monroe....I wonder why. The main reason people had Monroe ranked higher is because he was younger. I never saw anyone say he was a better player though.

As to the players, Albert may be better than Collins, not sure.

How are you not sure if Albert is better than Collins?

The time to judge what Hickey's done this off season is after the draft. Since I don't know their board i'll wait till afterwards to grade all the off season moves.

So far i like resigning Grimes and Starks. Getting a top tackle was a good move although Albert was expensive he was one of the top three available so that's ok.
Like Mitchell to replace Big Paul. Would have gone Blount over Moreno. Don't care for Delmas or Finnegan.

Mostly agree but, Hickey almost begging Streiff to come for a visit (already posted) tells me that he was short on what he wanted in FA. JMO

Finnegan's deal was probably the worst contract handed out by any team this year...just horrible.

Sound post SB. I definitely put Albert in the top echelon available with Monroe nd Veldheer, but I would put him a close 3rd. His pass protection may be the best but not by a large margin. He has about half the prime years available that Veldheer and Monroe have left judging by injuries and age. We overpaid by a large amount a guy who lives in Miami already.

I don't have a problem at all with the player. He is good, a good fit, and a good citizen. Those are the types I like. But, all 3 of that top echelon of LT were those three things. In negotiation, we fixated on him and got fleeced a bit.

I'm not against taking a flyer on Courtland Finnegan, but 5.5M is no flyer! Alterraun Verner was almost a sure thing top CB, and could be had for less.

I'm on record as not liking Shelley Smith because he is a terrible pass protector.

I think we will miss Paul Soliai, and Mitchell is just another gap penetrator putting a lot more pressure on our MLB to dominate physically against the run while constantly shedding blocks. None of our current LB's can do that.

Thus far I'm not overly impressed with Hickey, but we have secured some good talent and I will reserve judgment until after the draft.

Thanks Digital. We agree other than I believe Mitchell is going to surprise you.

Asamoah is way better than Shelly as a complete player, and legit starter and fit.

I disagree. Asamoah lost his starting job halfway through the season last year to fatso Geoff Schwartz and is more expensive than Shelly Smith. Sure, he's athletic, but he was never a good starting RG.

Asamoah got $22 million on 5 years, Smith got 2 years on $5.5 million.

I was overly anxious to fix most of the OL in the first few days of FA. I was told by some to be patient. Well, after seeing the end result of what we ended up with on the OL, and FA overall. I have to second guess what Hickey has done. I also have to believe that IF Ireland had done the same, more would be doing the same. A closer look.

OL- We overpaid Albert at $9M a year, and got Smith for $2.8M a year. IMO, we could have had Collins for $6M and Asamoah for 5M, and still had Smith. So, we could have filled 3 spots for $2M more. I would have preferred that.

CB- We got a good deal on Grimes but overpaid Finnegen at $5.5M a year. We could have had Verner, who I targeted to replace Grimes (almost as good last year), for $5M in place of Finnegen.

S- We got Delmas for $3.5M, and could have kept Clemons for less than half that.

RB- We got Moreno for $3M, and Blount went for $1.9. Debatable.

DT- We got Starks for $6M, and Mitchell for $4M. DT is very deep and talented in this draft. We could have signed one, and drafted another, saving a few Mil. Debatable.

Overall, I'm not overly impressed with what Hickey has done to this point but, we shall see.

I like every signing. OL we got the best guy on the market, a young up and coming Guard, and Fox for competition with a rookie. With this being the best draft for OL in years it would have been a mistake to sign a bunch of guys and ignore the best year to get a franchise lineman. For corner we just signed grimes for 4 years so no need to trow a long term deal at Verner. A 1 year deal for a Vet with good leadership to help the two young guys was a good move. Safety we got a true leader for a guy who was solid but that's it. RB is the one position im not too thrilled about because i would have preferred Miller with a new line in front of him. DT was the best moves IMO.

I don't give a damn about the money...I just want to know we are plugging holes with real players, instead of crap...Which is what Ireland fixed everything with...

Threads like these always amuse me b/c you make it seem like all of these guys were not only available, but would've also agreed to sign with Miami at the same rate as the teams they actually signed with. It's also funny to me that you're now second-guessing Hickey's job so far, based on nothing, but also based on whatever your interpretation of a good team is.

Just wait and see how it plays out before being disappointed.

Your being positive lately is frightening me

yeah, i'm glad they got albert. not even mad they paid as much as they did. it's good to see the team get who they wanted. why *****foot around? might be a good chance that if miami actively tried to get any other tackles, that they would have ended up with none of the top FA prospects. It's not like miami is hurting for money.

We act like all players just want to play here...
Like if we offer the money of course they come...

How are you not sure if Albert is better than Collins?

I'm thinking that Monroe was gonna go back to Balt, and that most teams knew that. JMO

Collins was a bit better than Albert last year, although in limited play. He was a risk but, $3M cheaper.

National and even local views on this team have been positive for the Dolphins this free agency. With some saying the Dolphins did the best job among all the teams. Though the fan base hates everything that was done. Seems about right.
