Shelley Smith Leaves N.E. w/o deal

Ya he's a bit grabby in pass pro, there's definitely some risk there but we really need some brute force inside and Smith has performed at a high level as a run blocker. Great athlete to boot, with our current stable I'd rather take a chance on this guy than Oher who really hasn't shown anything for a while IMO. But to each their own. Oher's worth exploring just due to the lack of options we have but if we're relying on him at RT I'd very concerned for Tanny.

just spit balling here but if you sign oher and you draft say zach martin you got right tackle options and a starting guard...i'd be ok rolling with a albert pouncey oher martin (right guard to be named later) front 5...but if oher showed he couldnt hack it could always move zach martin out there...just saying...and at this point you'd likely be able to get out of ohers contract if not in one year two...

and maybe you do sign this shelley smiith and he balls out at right guard for ya...can't just have tunnel vision guys

Right now I think there's only one starting option at guard with upside on the market, that's Shelley Smith. There's no guarantee that Zach Martin is even gonna be there, then what? We can't enter the draft that locked into a guy, especially when we don't know he'll be there. If he's gone well we're hoping a second round tackle start of Oher falters. If we sign Smith and then a proven RT like Strief then we have some flexibility. I'd even look at adding another stop gap for RG like Wade Smith or Daryn Colledge...but I don't wanna rely on them, much like Oher. As a swing tackle I could get on board because he didn't just lose that athleticism he had..

i'm not getting locked into anything if martins gone you either look at xavier sua filo or you go to another position and get it later...that's why i was spit balling...this team though doesnt want to get too stop gap heavy just means all these freaking positions have to be filled again in the short term...

I'm pretty damn high on Sua Filo, so I could definitely see him fit in. But you take Sua Filo and then I don't think we have any RT depth behind Oher and would be relying on him and a 3rd or so rounder. I agree we should get stop gap heavy, which is part of the reason I'd love to see them sign Shelley because although there's some risk the guy's a mauler with upside and there's no one else like him left on the market. You can stop gap RG and RT and draft the replacements in the first 4-5 rounds, I've been saying it for a while and I hope we move in that direction.

Why....

I will ask...everyone seems to want this kid, but has anyone seen him play? I'm all for bring in lineman to compete, but signing him isn't a necessity...

I watched Saffold a lot, since last year, seeing as that was like the number 1 guy I wanted here... and I noticed Shelley a few times (not that much). He's not all that great in pass pro, but he's a good run pro guy. He plays both sides of the OL and was a fast athletic guy coming out (5.03 40 time).. I honestly think he's better than a lot of what's out there at the moment and I don't want to see Brenner and Thomas starting when there are other options, like Smith.

why would anyone project dallas thomas to start...he would have had to totally remake himself for that to happen...you wanna talk about soft...if smith has upside then by all means bring him in...but i dont think his body of work warrants any $4 mil per stuff...or a long term commitment...nor would i pencil him in as a auto starter...he wants a contract here come to compete...way i see it

Oher has been horrible the last two years. Last year, he ranked #68, worse than Martin, Clabo, and McKennie. On the run a grade of -17.0, and pass was 0.2, with 8 sacks, 7 hits, and 42 hurries.

In 2012, he was as bad with a -17.1 run grade, a +3.7 n the pass but, 12 sacks, 6 hits, and 28 hurries. No way in hell do I want him.

Some don't agree with PFF but, when a player is ranked #68, and n the run was worse for two years "running" there is a Columbo type problem.

well like i said that's why i am more than willing to stand alone on the oher front...the grades dont matter to me...

Totally agree!

Agree, as of now Smith is kinda like "In the valley of the blind, the man with one eye is King." IMO, we messed up by not increasing our offer to Asamoah, who I really liked. It is what it is and at this point, I can live with around $4M. Don't like it but, can live with it.

I don't think he'll get $4 million...small sample size still limits guys, Collins only got $6m annually. I'd say a contract for 3 years between 9-10.5 will get it done.

If memory serves, you did not like Oher either when we talked about him a few months ago. What changed your mind?

I can't believe Smith would break the bank. Worst case they sign him and draft someone that beats him out. Heck they paid Garner $1.2m last year, scheduled to make $1.7m this year and $1.8m next year and he can't even stay healthy for a full year.

I hope you're right but, we painted ourselves in a corner at OG, and other teams have expressed interest while having him in for visits. I only saw him play one game, and is everything I want on the run, and not what I want in pass pro.
