Someone please explain this to me

OP, you don't have to do anything & can keep your conscience clear rooting for the Phins ....

Suck for Luck ... simply entails sitting back & watching the train-wreck unfold, with a sense of helplessness, dread, & foreboding.

Watch it happen is what we'll all be doing.
Rooting for it to happen is different don't you think ?

when you watch the inconsistency of dolphin quarterback play when it seems like an eternity
To finally have a chance to change that luck around will be a godsend when ireland is wheeling and dealing
and chooses another 3 4 defensive lineman then well will all be like awww ****

I get that a majority here would like us to finish with the worst record to get the first pick.
I also get that this team needs new coaching and management.
But someone please explain to me how "Suck for Luck" works.
Is it an every play thing or does it only go in effect at the end of the game ?
Should we cheer fumbles and boo TD passes from Miami ?
Will our favorite players be the ones who screw up the most ?
No more complaning about fans not showing up for home games. Who cares ?
No more "get every good player released " post. Good players could mess up the plan.
After the game will we applaud the good performances? Or want those guys traded.
Setting at a sports bar with my Fins jersey on I'm supposed to stand up and cheer when Sanchez throws a TD pass ? Then boo a Dolphins int ?
Someone please explain the guide lines for Suck for Luck.
Then go on the Jets site and explain it to them. They should really like that one.
NYJunc will have a field day.

I think you're placing more relevance on things that aren't that relevant to begin with. It doesn't matter whether or not you applaud the good plays or not.

It seems as if you think you have to prove to yourself that you're a "real fan", and you would feel like less of a fan if you actually hoped for losses via keeping the bigger picture in mind.

Not me.

I don't have to prove to myself that I'm a fan. Most of us have been through way too much over our time as Dolphins fans, to have to prove it to ourselves now that we indeed, still are. I don't feel like any less of a fan by hoping this team loses out the rest of the season. It's the only avenue I can see that benefits the team in the long run.

There's absolutely not a lick of difference to me between going 1-15 or 0-16. Just like there's not a lick of difference between going 6-10 or 3-13. A few meaningless wins that you won't even remember 3 years from now is nothing compared to having something to look forward to for the next decade+.

I don't typically 'cheer' plays anyway...good or bad. If Miami scores a touchdown, my reaction is somewhere along the lines of "that DB got roasted", "the linebacker took a terrible angle", etc. If Miami gives up a big play, my reaction is somewhere along the lines of "I saw that one coming... they set it up 3 plays ago". That's about it.

When I watch football, I'm typically watching the chess game that's going in between the two teams, and the adjustments that are made (or not made). That's where my enjoyment of watching the game comes from. I realize that's different from typical fans, but that's the coach in me.

If I believe Miami's best chance at becoming relevant again in the NFL involves them losing enough to clean house, and acquire a franchise quarterback....it's always purely from a football perspective. I have no emotional attachment to any player in a Dolphins uniform. I either like the guy as a player/person, or I don't. Simple as that.

I either believe a player has aspects of his game that can improve through coaching, or weaknesses that can be attributed to inexperience, etc... or I don't.

If I didn't like a guy as a Steeler or Bronco, etc.... I didn't suddenly start liking him when he came to Miami and put a Dolphins cap on his head.

Same deal with the coach. I either believe in the guy's coaching ability, or I don't. Same with the GM. Same with the owner.

The bottom line is, there is no right or wrong way to "Suck for Luck". Similar to how there's no right or wrong way to watch a football game.

The difference is, I KNOW why I look at things the way I do, and why I feel the way that I feel. I don't need for someone else's approval first. None of it is based on being a fan, how to be a fan, what a fan is supposed to be, etc., etc.

I believe that I have as 'unemotional' of an outlook on Miami Dolphins football as a person can possibly have, which is why I tend to have the utmost confidence in my outlook one way or the other.

It's football to me.

Thanks. Now I get it. Take all emotions out and just enjoy the strategy of the game.
You know what ? That is exactly what I do for all teams except one (two if you count college)
I'm sorry if my first reaction to a good play is to cheer and I get pissed when a bad play happens. As far as the players. I like them when they play for us. Could care less after they leave. If I could completely take emotions out of it like you there would be no dilemma. There in lies the rub. I can not.
Thanks again for your helpful post.

If there is no emotion behind it, I would say that you are not a fan. There is no guarantee that we will obtain a franchise QB (even if we are in a position to draft #1 overall) and that a QB will solve all of our problems. Without knowing for sure that losing games will benefit the Dolphins long term, I can not root for losses, and never will.

I don't see how anyone can call wins "meaningless". I remember well almost every Dolphin game I've watched, and only a select few have come in playoff-bound seasons. I will not be made to feel bad about rooting for my football team to win games. The rest of you can root for us to lose and pick up Luck just like every bad team in 2005 was supposed to suck so they could get Reggie Bush.

QB>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>RB. I could add about of million of those. And if every bad team was sucking to get him, why didn't he go first overall?

Nobody is expecting you to feel bad. Actually, nobody cares if others aren't on the "suck for Luck" train, because it really doesn't impact anything. If you are fine with mediocrity, by all means, cheer away. It's been a good decade for it.

Funny, I found this definition:

[h=3]fan/fan/
[/h]A person who has a strong interest in or admiration for a particular sport, art or entertainment form, or famous person.

How about we not tell others how to be fans? If they are posting on here after this many years of ****ty football, they are more than likely legit fans. Decade-long mediocre teams don't have bandwagons.

As for QB solving all our problems, no, it won't all by itself; but it would be BY FAR the most important step in the process.

we don't ahve to do anything really. the team blows. not really "trying" to suck for luck. we suck point blank.

Anyone who take the time to post or reply here is a true fan and all opinions are just that.
Big picture the #1 draft pick would enable us to finally get our QB and that's a good thing.
I'll put that in the back of my mind as I'll be rooting for us to destroy the Jets.
Here a question for you guys.
Gates returns the opening kick off for a spectacular TD.
What do you do ?
a) cheer like hell for my favorite team
b) get pissed because we may win and upset SFL.
c) analyze the play with no emotional involvement what so ever.

I think I might just skip some games and watch after the fact so I can eliminate the need to cheer and just watch my team play already knowing the outcome.

No where in that definition did I see rooting against. I'm not telling anyone what to be. I'm telling you that I don't consider you a true fan. Even if we get the #1 overall and draft Luck, we still don't know what kind of NFL QB he will be. I don't want my team to be the worst team in football, just for a chance to draft something that may or may not pan out. Most of the great NFL QBs were not drafted #1 overall.

that's certainly an option.

Sorry I want Luck more than I hate the Jets. A potential hall of fame player like Elway or Manning versus some meaningless game everyone will forget about in a few weeks. hmm

Completely agree(and nice avatar by the way)

I think a lot of the Suck for Luck mindset has to do with fans thinking about the bigger picture and whats best for this franchise.

I'm tired of the same old bs this team shows us every year. If they have to lose to win on Luck than so be it. I've watched the same $#!t for 10+ years. They had their chance to improve. They had their chance to get better and win. Nope... they fell on their face every single time. I don't give a damn anymore. It has to stop somewhere.
