Regarding Philbin not liking him, that would have to be earned. I doubt Philbin just woke up one day with a hair up his ass about Matthews.
He might not hustle, is lackadaisical about preparation, or is not respectful to the coach. It could be anything.
The bottom line is that Landry and Binns will prove to be better receivers and Matthews is likely going to get cut.

Matthews has talent dude. He isnt out drinking and driving, or doing drugs or fighting at bars or hitting his wife... (That we know of) So if its just a personality conflict, that should not be reason to get rid of a player. If the player plays hard on the field (which he plays his ass off come game time) and he works hard, then he shouldnt be cut.

He was a 2nd year player, could need to mature a bit, but Matthews is a stud. He is just as good as Hartline and Gibson IMO and if he leaves another team will be quick to pick him up. Maybe this report lit off a bulb in Matthews head and will make him a better player. Who knows, but i cant wait until the preseason starts!!!

I like Matthews and am rooting for him to succeed. The third year is when the light comes on for a lot of young WR's.

But running the right routes and timing and depth are absolutely crucial to a WCO. If the WR is supposed to break off his route and turn inside and the QB is supposed to throw the pass as or before he breaks, that is a trust and route running play.

If a young WR doesn't break off that route it is an INT. If the WR hesitates and is slow in hi cut then the ball is too far in front of the WR and it is an INT. If the WR goes too deep he can arrive late for an INT or have the ball hit the ground incomplete from a perfect throw that everyone will blame the QB. If the WR cuts too shallow it can lead to a tipped ball over the middle and an INT.

Route running is the most important aspect of the WCO. Precise routes allow the QB to quickly throw to a point and trust that the WR will always get there at the right time. This is exactly why Brian Hartline keeps looking like he is always thrown a great ball an why Wallace so often seems like Tannehill has no idea where he is going to be.

It's no accident that once Tannehill and Philbin's/Sherman's WCO came in Hartline instantly became a 1,000 yard WR.

The WCO demands correct reads to break off the route tree poperly. It requires exact timing to break open at the right time to create a window just as your QB's read progression has him turning to you. It requires adjusting depth correctly for down and distance as well as coverage. It requires constantly protecting your QB from INT's because he has o throw all the time.

It requires blocking downfield so teammates can break plays. And under Lazor it will require more pick plays to eliminate or delay the guy covering a teammate like a basketball pick play.

Notice how that is a LOT of things that aren't really dependent on speed and quickness? Those sorts of things are exactly the type of things Hartline, Gibson and Landry can do well. They are not the sort of thing Wallace, Clay and Sims do well.

It becomes clear why Hartline and Gibson flourished last year. Hopefully Wallace can learn to become that precise of an WR. If so, and if we stay healthy, we will finally have a good offense.

After Hartline went down in the Jets game Matthews needed to step up. It looked like he lost his concentration during that game if I recall correclty. Honestly we don't know what it is but concentration and preperation would be my best bet. I really wanted him to get on the filed sooner and was pulling for him but maybe thats why it took a while for them to give him more opportunities. One things for sure they have loaded up in numbers at the WR position so they were not pleased with the overall play.
 
Matthews has under achieved so far. The staff will only wait so long for the player to "get it".
IMHO, he is not the smartest guy and has trouble learning...especially a complicated system, but has the physical talent. That would drive any coach crazy.
 
Philben is just motivating Matthews. Mathews is a very very talented receiver and some players need the extra nudge to get them to produce, just coaching 101 stuff here..

Maybe you forget, but that game and the Buffalo game... Tannehill was on his ass more often then not. The offensive line was terrible in those games.
 
No that would be hard to forget. It seemed during the Jet game they were moving the ball a little better until Hartline went down. I think that changed the game just like in New England after Gibson went down.
 
I'm not sure why hoops is so down on binns over mathews. Mathews is more talented but lets not forget he was a 7th rounder. He was that for a reason hes not very polished in terms of route running and might never understand the option toute system. Binns is still very young and was playing lights out last offseason before injury. Maybe he is just a offseason or practice champ and come game time a no show. But hes very young I don't think you have enough evidence to tell yet. If binns beats mathews so be it

Agreed - Wallace is going to have problems this year 1. if his atitude doesn't change 2. he doesn't learn how to break off routes
