That's what happened. That's what they have STATED happened. If you'd like to go off vague and misremembered quotes, that's fine. You have every right to be wrong.

Well of course that's what happened, and nobody has said otherwise. We aren't talking about how the trade went down. We are talking about how our FO settled on Dion Jordon BEFORE the draft. Nice try though.

You say Ross didn't ask Ireland to get Jordon based on coaches consensus, and I said he did. You think Ireland dissented and made a high risk move on his own, and should be the one held accountable should Jordan fail. I disagreed. How you got to anyone disagreeing with how the trade went down is beyond me...

Its very clear that Ross, the coaching staff, and scouting department ALL wanted Jordan, and Ireland executed the pick based on who they wanted. This wasnt some rouge GM forcing Jordan onto a team.

First, after a bit of digging I found exactly where the quote that stuck in my mind originated from. Second, your comment that Ireland offered

is purely your opinion CK, do not present it as fact when you're trying to establish facts. You don't know what the initial offer was any more than we do. Third after reading the source of the quote i'm going to concede that it was a misquote. However, I'm sure I can safely assume that Ross approved of Ireland's attempt to move up and draft Jordan, since he has been willing to override him in the past.

Finally, the misquote (or at least a part of it appears to be misattributed to Ross)

Now my last concern is that Ross's post draft interview only shows 1:22. I'm sure there was more to it than that, and it's the missing part of the interview that I'd be interested in seeing before I completely give up on the idea that ross told them to get Jordan if they could, rather than implied consent because he didn't override Ireland.

Jeff Ireland brought everybody in the building to the Scouting Combines this year because he knew how important this Draft was. As we all know, the Dolphins owned the 12th overall pick. The Dolphins also had 2 picks in the second round. He traded up to get Dion Jordan who had and still has a bad shoulder, giving up a high 2nd round pick in the process. At this point none of this years Draft picks will make an impact on this team with the exception of K-Celeb Sturgis. If the Miami Dolphins finish with a record any worse than 10-6, please make a case as to why he should get a new contract.

this is correct...i do believe though that on the initial call that ireland offered #56 and the raiders said no...then the oak raiders called back late in the clock and said they'll take pick #42...and it was done

Is that right? I had heard it was a lower pick than that with potentially Davone Bess involved.

Earlier in the week, during an organization dinner, Ross had polled all the Dolphins' coaches, asking them who, with no regard to position or draft pick, each coach would want on the team. The name that kept coming up was Jordan. When Ireland told Ross he was going to call Oakland five minutes into the 10 minute draft clock for the Raiders' selection, Ross thought it was a joke.

It wasn't.

"Everybody thought, ‘Hey, we'll never get him.'" Ross said of the phone call. The move up to a third overall selection was expected to be cost prohibitive. Oakland rejected the Dolphins' initial offer. Then the phone rang again.

"Sure enough when they called back I think everybody in that room was shocked," Ross said. "This is an impact player."

"I made a call before the draft just to let them to know that I was interested in maybe getting up," recalled Ireland. "And then I waited for about I don't know five or six minutes while they were on the clock and there was no call from them.

"I called and just asked if they were looking to move the pick. They said they were ‘open for business.' I offered my first offer and they said, ‘We're not interested.' So I waited another 45 seconds to a minute and they called right back, asked for (No.) 42 and I said, ‘Sure, we'll do it.' That's how it happened."

After looking this is the most detailed account of what I could find as to what happened. To me it looks as though Ross asks the staff and FO which player they covet this most. By this he is just getting the conversation started. Ireland then during the draft tells Ross he is going to give a low ball offer to the Raiders. As stated no one in the room thought the Raiders would go for it. The Raiders then counter offered and the Fins excepted. To me it looks as though Ross may have got the ball rolling but then Ireland executed the coup with everyone on board. To me this shows that Ireland didn't just pull the deal off without anyone else's input and that it was a total FO and coaching staff decision that they were all very happy with. I think we are all arguing the same point but using different angles to approach it.

i don't think ireland will be judged by dion jordan...we finally took a risk and took a legit top pick worthy physical talent pass rush prospect...i do think ireland though will be judged by ryan tannehill...that will decide his fate...

he's tied to tannehill...not dion jordan...although if jordan never helps us due to medical etc at the end of the day it may not be irelands fault but he's gonna take heat...just part of the position he holds...

i just hope this medical staff didn't screw this one up with green lighting dion jordan...i know the kids a premium level talent but if the medical is no good you got nothing...

that's my understanding...pick #56 was floated raiders asked for #42 also ireland said no then raiders decided that their guy would be there at #12 the cb hayden and made the move for pick #42 and it was done

i believe bess was already being floated to cleveland prior and the sides were close...

I already detailed exactly what happened.

They had dinner the night before the draft and Steve Ross asked the football guys who they'd want regardless of where they drafted. The next day Jeff Ireland took a "who knows?" stab and called Oakland and offered them a very low ball offer, on the chance that they might be desperate to move down for whatever reason. Oakland rejected it. The clock wound all the way down to about 2 minutes before the pick needed to be in, which is the bare minimum time needed to file one of these trades and get the pick in on time. The Raiders called and said we'll do it for the 42nd pick. The Dolphins didn't know they were going to call back, didn't think they were going to call back. When they did get called back, they accepted.

And I don't think its a fair assumption that every player picked is solely the GM's choice.
