The Gary Kubiak Offense: concepts and analysis

Great thread, Warlus; it's sparked some awesome discourse. I'm with you on Kubiak. He's one of the best offensive minds in the NFL, and a lot of teams try to copy their rushing system, but Shanahan and Kubiak consistently have efficient running games - among the best every year. Give me Kubiak, Jeremy Hill, and a new O-line, and I'll be doing back flips. But I agree with you almost completely about our passing game. I think Wallace is fine, but he has to be the 2nd guy - the one that blows the top off. The lead dog has to be a physical guy who will catch a 20 yard square-in in traffic, and he has to be a strong RAC player. Brian Hartline should be nothing more than a guy you bring in to play boundary in 3-WR sets so that you can put your top guy in the slot.

Exactly. Agreed 100%. And that 20 yard square in is one of my very favorite routes in the NFL. It's really too bad we're picking too late in the first to grab Sammy Watkins. He's such a perfect fit for Kubiak's offense. I realize everyone thinks we have to spend our first four picks on the offensive line but I think there are some good players out there to be had this year in FA.

Looks like we're going to get to find out. Hope the ole guy still has something left in the tank.

He hasn't even interviewed and 2 OC's already chose other teams. You're pretty confident he would accept if given an offer

Quality post from a quality poster. This is what finheaven is all about.

You'd better hope we're going to find out.

Because if Gary decides he doesn't want the job, we are ****ed.

Benjamin as a WR from FSU and Ebron as a TE from UNC can play that role in their respective positions.

So..with Caldwell in Detroit..and McAdoo going to New York..I feel pretty good its going to be Kubiak.

Kubiak or bust now with Lazor and McAdoo gone.

Why wouldn't this stuff be just as antiquated and easy to defend in 2014 as the Packers sweep was by 1970? The book is so out on this.
I feel like we need a trendsetter here, not a follower.
Evolution. We need it.

Also, what's an easier path to near-future success? Jettison many players and have to fill many holes to fit a zone-system, or design something to fit our current talent?
We should be power-bludgeoning defenses with our big offensive linemen, not making elephants tap dance. Double-down on the positive aspects of what our roster presents.
To me, the WCO, itself, is outdated and easy to defend and doesn't challenge defenses enough.
Also, we need offense that maximizes Tannehill's athleticism. His best play of the whole season came on that 4th & 10 vs Baltimore which really should have been a game-winning TD as it hit Gibson perfectly in stride. That's where I would start as an OC; in what situations do players excel?
I want an OC who can come in here and maximize what we currently have and tweak from there. Who can do that?

Walrus, thank you for a well thought out and written article. I have been coming here for a long time and was starting to lose faith in some of the posts. Lots of knee jerk articles...Not sure if we can land Kubiak, but if we do it sure will be fun to watch and see what this offense can accomplish.
