This is going to be a great move to FINALLY put Pouncey at G where he belongs. Pouncey was always a good lineman, but the responsibilities of playing C were not a good fit with him. I still believe the snap count issues from last season had a lot to do with Pouncey. I also believe that it was not a coincidence that we drew more offsides penalties on the defense when Pouncey missed time last year.
Many of us wanted this move for a while and were hoping to either draft a C or sign a competent vet during the offseason. It is kind of funny how things worked out. The Pouncey injury forced us to bring in Satele after it was determined that Smith could not handle the position. It all worked out for the best. Satele is playing well enough that it would be foolish to bench him in favor of starting Smith or Thomas at RG now that Pouncey is back.
Putting your best 5 corn stalks out there is always the way to go. This crop of corn is shaping up to be one of the leagues finest.............
At LC, Brandon Albert is clearly one of the best in the game. I was against this signing only because of the cap number and my beliefs that it is foolish to spend so much cap money on a corn stalk. I never questioned Albert's ability. But, to his credit, Albert is completely dominating at LC. He is even better than I thought and this may have been a smart signing after all. I just did not want the move to prevent us from picking up some veterans at the other cornfed positions. Whether it was blind luck that Satele and Colledge wound up on the team late in the offseason or not, this Albert move has worked out great. Albert is great in pass protection and has opened some serious running lanes on the left side.
Colledge was a guy I suggested as soon as Arizona cut him. He was not only familiar with Philbin's offense, having played in GB for several seasons, but the guy had started many games in the NFL the past few years. He is certainly not dominant, but he has done a fine job for player that does not eat up a lot of cap space. This is what you need on the OL. Just block somebody and do not kill us. He is adequate and he is a part of what is happening on the left side. Someone find our rushing stats to the left this year. Just from what I have witnessed, I would guess that we have had great success running left so far this season. I can think of several big runs we have busted on the left side.
Satele is the vet I thought he would be. I do not know why he takes such a beating from fan bases. He does a fine job. He is not Dwight Stephenson, but he is worthy of a starting job in the NFL. The guy has been around and started for 3 different teams. He knows what he is doing.
Adding Pouncey as the RIC is going to put this unit over the top. RIC is the one spot on the line that has been hurting us. This was the only spot where I noticed below adequate play. Dallas Thomas is simply not an NFL player. Putting him in there among 4 legit NFL corn stalks was simply hiding him and hoping that he would not get exposed. Smith was nothing more than a decent run blocker, but a huge liability in pass protection. Having Pouncey in there is going to be awesome. His ability to pull is going to be something we need to exploit right away. I can see some MASSIVE runs being busted with this group.
I was one of many to bash the James selection at 19. But, if we were going to draft cornfed, Hickey made the correct choice. I have to give him credit here because there were quite a few alternatives at cornfed in this draft who are looking like busts. We could have easily waited till a later round once Zach Martin was off the board and had we done so we likely would have wound up with a bust or a player not nearly as good as James. James has done a fine job so far. He looks like he could be our starting RC for years to come. If he improves as he gets more experience, he still could wind up being the best corn stalk selected in the entire 2014 draft. Not too shabby Hickey. Dare I say....... Like a BOSS!
I am excited about this crop of corn. We could damn well be looking at a top 5 crop here. The OL can not be an excuse for Hennehill now. I look for our rushing attack to start really dominating and give us a great chance to win a lot of games. This team could still win this division if we start dominating teams with the rushing attack and let our defense do its thing.
When you look around the league, there are many teams with poor OC play. There just are not as many good corn stalks to go around as there were in years past. And if a team takes a few hits with injuries to the position they can struggle to put a good crop out there. We still have a lack of depth at OC, but with Pouncey back and playing RIC, our starting 5 is one of the leagues best units. Not a bad rebuild in one offseason, but we are fortunate to have been able to get Colledge and Satele when we did.
