How do you coach players to TANK.
I think you would have players demanding trades.
I think the point of the article isn’t that the coaches try and lose games on purpose, that’s not what I was advocating, nor what the article is saying. What the article is saying is that the best way to rebuild this team and Get the best chance for a top 5 pick in the 2020 draft is to:
-Cut all of your high priced free agents
-Don’t sign expensive free agents, and certainly not any that aren’t under 30
-Try and trade down in the draft to acquire more picks
-Don’t sign any of the most expensive QB Free Agents, that means no Nick Foles, no Teddy Bridgewater
-Start David Fales and maybe another rookie you draft in this draft, probably not in the first round
-Start filling the gaps on your Offensive and defensive lines
The Coaching staff and players will still try and win all of their games, it’s just that the roster they will be working with will be talent deficient in many areas including QB as the team tries to address all of these holes over more than one year, more through the draft then anywhere else. Whilst this approach is no guarantee, it is highly likely that the team will be drafting high next year when by all accounts it looks like a much deeper talent pool to pick a franchise QB with multiple options including Tua, Fromm, etc.
I support this strategy because I think it’s our best chance to get a franchise QB without having to spend so much draft capital in the form of picks and future picks to move up to draft one when we will still have tons of holes to fill and the approach should be to try and fill as many of those holes with draft picks as opposed to high priced free agents.
Alternatively, maybe they draft Murray if he’s there at 13. I wouldn’t trade up for him, but if he fell to us I wouldn’t be opposed to drafting him because if he’s great like a russel Wilson type, then we solved our problem, if he is too small for the NFL, then we will still lose lots of games and will still be in a position to draft another QB in 2020. I’D prefer we didn’t do this because we could fill some holes on either line or at corner, pass rusher, guard, center, and then get our QB in the 2020 draft without trading any draft capital to do so, but I would be intrigued to see if Murray’s it factor translates at the pro level. In any case, this off season will likely be more interesting then the regular season so I will follow it closely...
