The Dolphins would stand to reap enormous salary cap savings if they cut Ryan Tannehill after this season, even in the unlikely event that the injury sidelines him into next season.

If the Dolphins release Tannehill after the season, they would owe him nothing more financially because none of money in the final two seasons of his contract (through 2020) is guaranteed.

For those they were asking- the scenarios are at the link

17mil is nothing for a starting QB. Besides, there aren't many other options, and slim pickings in the draft. Let him go this offseason, and we'll be right back I'm the days of Cleo Lemon and Ray Lucas.

I understand that some folks don't like him, but I think many forget that it could be much, much worse.

Is this accurate after the restructure?

This is accurate.

The restructure did very little in terms of actual money being spent.

It did damage to our salary cap

So in theory it is all up to Ross if he wants to drop 19 million into Ryans lap in 2019, or exit the contract and not give him anything else but still the team cap will be affected by the money we previously gave him.

Yeaaa with the 2020 QB class approaching . . . Much, much worse probably is a good route for a season.

Whatever happens...the Dolphins really need to get someone in the FO who can structure better contracts...they have made a mess. We could have a bunch if dead money next year. Ross is a big real estate guy..he should know the FO is not being smart with the contracts and restructuring.

I would let him walk if I was GM but I am not. just have to see what they do next yr. they need try something new. doing same thing is not working.

Just so people understand, the $13.4 million (dead money if cut in 2019) is on the cap whether we keep Ryan or not. That ain’t the issue here.

The ultimate issue is, does Steve Ross wanna give Ryan Tannehill 18.75 million dollars in 2019 to be on this team.

If he does, then the team still sees a 5.4 million dollar dead hit in 2020 if cut, or the team can wipe their hands clean after 2019 with the full $13.4 million dollar hit.
