Time For A Soft Rebuild

I'm firing Grier and McDaniel.

I'm hiring Louis Riddik and Ben Johnson.

I'm trading Tua, Tyreek, and Waddle for tons of assets.

Another true rebuild commences...

So you're going to draft a QB, good knows if they'll be any good, and it will be hard to tell because they won't have any one to throw to, they won't have a line that can block, and they won't have a running game that you can hang your hat on.

Let's just say that you got a first round pick for each of those players- I mean in actuality you aren't getting a first for Tua or Tyreek, but ok. So now you are down two starting receivers (not to mention that we don't even have any viable receivers besides Tyreek and Tua) as well as a QB. So you're counting on hitting on all those picks just to get back to where we were. But realistically, bust rates are very high for QB's and even among wide receivers there's plenty of Treylon Burks drafted. You're not replacing all those players. Yeah you'd get some cap money- and we've seen in 2013 and 2020 how much blowing a bunch of money in FA does for your team. You're paying for production somebody gave another team that didn't prioritize retaining them. That works out really well. And then you just have your entire core, if somehow you hit on all those picks, coming due for FA at the exact same time, which is a nightmare.

And none of that adds anything to the OL, adds any depth receivers, adds a tight end behind Jonnu, adds somebody in the secondary who can do anything half worthwhile because the only ones worth anything there are over the hill and we'll be short our two starting safeties. None of that adds a DT besides Sieler, an off ball LB.

Oh but we'll have 8000 draft picks so we can fill every hole. Great, but an organization that has never proven it can draft well is now going to have to scout to replace the entire roster. The more holes you have to fill in one draft, the more picks you HAVE to hit, you lower your efficiency and your "hit" rate. Nearly every team that has had more than two first rounders in one draft- including us- has royally blown a few of those because its damn hard.

Let's learn from the mistakes that we've been making constantly since Marino. Let's not discard the good pieces we have, but conserve cap for a bit by not chasing mediocre FA's and give young players, and not Jordan Poyer, a chance.

and can we not use the term "soft rebuild"?
this team is way too soft to begin with
Its to differentiate from everybody's typical idea of a rebuild which has become common in the NFL but rarely results in championships- the idea that you have to trade everyone and intentionally suck so you can get the QB to build around, the magically you'll be able to assemble a championship team around them in 2 years even though you had a league worst team before.

I would absolutely start by firing the gm and the special teams coach. I would make upgrading right guard my number one offseason priority personnel wise. Plan b qb would be a priority as well as in someone who can handle themselves. If that means first round pick qb so be it. Tua deserves no more quarter
First round QB won’t be in play this upcoming draft but next year for sure it should be in play.

It's time for Miami to do the Minnesota style soft rebuild. Its time to stop spending money on Jordan Poyer, Kiko Alonso, Kyle Van Noy-level bandaids that don't move the needle but add up to cap space all the same. Stop spending both draft picks and cap to add the Jalen Ramseys and Bradley Chubbs. Stop sending late round picks for guys like Jeff Wilson who are going to marginally upgrade an area where you could use some help.

If you spend money at all, spend it retaining the young talent we have. This team couldn't retain Christian Wilkins, Robert Hunt, or Andrew Van Ginkle, players that we drafted and developed, not just because we spend high dollars on supposedly marquee players, some of which like Tyreek have delivered, but other slike Byron Jones did not, but also because all of those dollars that were spent on guys who were just there to fill a hole with a supposedly NFL body that you're paying millions to get the play of what a good draft pick could have offered.

You can cut ties with guys like Tyreek that are obviously entering the backside of their careers. But there is a middle ground to "win now" and trading everyone of any value. So often I've seen the Dolphins do whatever it takes so they can get "picks and money" and inevitably trading talented young players has involved spending a boatload of high picks over the next few years just trying to replace a player we already had on the roster. Laremy Tunsil turns into drafting Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg high and still not having an LT until you overpay for a fragile Terron Armstead, Vontae Davis turns into drafting Jamar Taylor and Will Davis among others, Minkah Fitzpatrick turns into Noah Igby, Jevon Holland, and some of the biggest free agent dollars ever spent at the time in a mid player like Byron Jones, etc. Look around the league, and you'll see that the good organizations have pretty much never had the "tear it all down" moments. They made trade players, but its either of the dealing from a position of strength, or getting rid of a guy a year before they fall off the cliff.

Having more picks doesn't always equate to being able to draft more good players either- it ends up involving a lot of reaches drafting for need, and its hard as hell to develop young players when they have nothing but other young players around them.

The Dolphins 2019 rebuild was a failure. We got rid of bad contracts after 2018 only to start blowing even more cap in 2020 compensating for the expansion-level talent we willfully created. Its time to stop the madness. Stop spending reckless money, supplement the young players we do have instead of yet again trying to build an entire football team from scratch.

EDITING TO CLARIFY- My idea of a soft rebuild is entirely in regards to the roster. I do not believe in the current coaching staff and I believe that Grier was given his chance and failed as well.
Need a new gm and coach for this to work. Until that happens it doesn’t matter

I hate giving up draft capital. I said it way back when but I feared we gave up far too much for Reek (probably the biggest example).

Don't forget trading up for Eich when the more needed services of a perfectly fine center awaited us.

Still not sure why we had to trade for Waddle and he's one of my favorites.

Keep your picks, don't give away monies.

The fact this special teams coach has hung around as long as he has is fkn embarassing

Chop. Sieler. Waddle. Washington. Achane. Wright. Tua. Maybe Phillips. Other than that we have no young guys that we should keep. The cub board is bare. This is a full reset not a soft one.

They’re still rebuilding. It takes time. You think teams just flip the switch in a year or two and start winning playoff games? McDaniel and Grier need until 2028 to get this roster set to compete for playoff wins. Trust the process.

I'm not as upset as most about this. I've been through this before and will be going through it again.

I'm more upset for my little guy who's only 7 years old and I've indoctrinated him into being a Fins fan and he will have to suffer his entire life like his dad. Brutal.

Son.... You will be a Dolphins fan for life.

You know those damn aqua uniforms have a way of sucking someone in.

Miami's roster isn't bad, but the Dolphins are chasing too many teams.

Definitely need a bit of a rebuild and, I agree, that doesn't mean chasing big contracts.

Have to put together a series of strong drafts. That's where any build begins.
Agree, it's not horrible, but there are MAJOR holes and BIG decisions that need to be made by hopefully a new GM and new coach.

I think we have our LT of the now and the future in Paul, need to cut Armstead loose.

Jackson is fine at RT, so bookends should be good.

Brewer has been a nice addition.

The line lacks physicality at the guard positions and depth along the line.

They also need a big bodied possession type receiver. Too many Smurfs in the receiver room.

They need a legit power back to compliment Achane.

Then of course then need a change in philosophy. Stop being so cute, and do the basic blocking and tackling.

Defense IMO needs more than the offense, but it has to start with the pass rush.
