I'd put money on it. He's seen guys drafted the year after him, who arnt any better than Blake Bortles get paid and he's supposed to risk injury.

The Dolphins are contractually obligated to pay Tua $23 million for the 2024 season. If he holds out gets no money.

On the contrary Miami’s offense is completely dependent on what Tua excels at. Without Tua you’re talking about a complete offensive overhaul. From the oline that is designed to get the ball out fast where Tua’s fastest release of all time comes in key and where timing and accuracy speed up that process, down to the wideouts the excel off being able to run to open spaces quickly and having the ball pinpointed.

Despite what you may get fed on how this is a “Shanahan offense” that’s qb friendly. It is not. That’s such a lazy comparison. Miami’s offense is one of the least qb friendly offenses in the league nor is it similar to shanahan’s offense. Some of the concepts are similar however philosophy is completely different.

Shanahan is a run the ball set up the short passing game to create big plays. McDaniel is more long difficult passing plays to set up easy stuff underneath and the run game.

McDaniel uses motion way more which alone learning the playbook is tougher. Knowing where wideouts need to be and where to place the ball for them in stride while getting the ball out extremely fast is something maybe 2-3 other qbs do, that’s it.

Maybe McDaniel could create another offense however will it be effective as this one? Not only will personal need to be changed but so does scheme as this one is tailored to Tua in every way shape and form.

With all that in mind, who really needs who more? There’s always going to be teams that will pay him. On the other hand how long does Miami take to not only find a qb, develop a new scheme then once again surround him with talent that matches that scheme and his abilities. 2-3 years? 5 years? There’s no real answer because realistically there’s a solid chance you may not ever be able to replicate what we’ve seen so far and to be honest I don’t think we’ve seen it’s max potential under Tua yet either.

For two seasons in a row the Dolphins performance has collapsed. Maybe a 'complete offensive overhaul' is what's needed.

Which teams?
For the recent draft the Bears, Commanders, Patriots and Broncos all used their first round pick on a QB, and they will pay their new QB a rookie contract. Do you think any of those four teams would have given their 1st round pick in exchange for Tua? I don't think so.
Former coach Flores seemed to think Tua's work ethic was questionable, he's injury prone, is immobile ,and in four seasons as a Dolphin has not led the team to a playoff victory. These are the issues and questions prospective teams would have regarding Tua, and my guess is that Dolphins management has these same concerns.

Please remember that in March of 2023 the Dolphins exercised their 5th year option for Tua to play this coming season. So, he is under contract , and if he leads the team to a good season a year from now the Dolphins can offer him a new contract . Or, if his performance is not good the Dolphins can move forward with a different quarterback. It's a win-win situation for the Dolphins.

Best case scenario for the team which is why I support this timeline. Eh but unfortunately it seems like the writing is on the wall and Tua will get this extension. Just hope it's for a bargain because there's not a chance I'd pay him up there with the other top qbs. He's been blessed and benefited with coaching and weapons these past two seasons with McD. Would be wise for him to take what Grier offers and consider himself blessed. Until he proves that he can find success against top defenses aka playoff caliber teams.

Personally I would also need to see him show he's competent at reading defenses. This is the mental part of his game or lack of that concerns me.. He's benefited from spot throwing, which his excellent anticipatory throws were on display, and luckily it's worked for him... not so much towards the end of season as defenses tightened the space on these predictable windows. So the question I would have, is how much longer can the team sustain success with this scheme? McDaniel must get creative and devise something clever but still there will be a point where defenses catch on.

Solution is for Tua to excel beyond his first read and that would require him to be competent at reading the field in real time. I'm not confident with his ability to do this... we'll see if he improves, which I believe it's always possible.. players can continually improve there mental processing each season if they're determined to. Maybe Tua and coaches have brought this to light and he's actively working on this. We shall see...
 
I do find it fascinating how some folks here claim Tua is exceptional at processing the field, by making quick throws and such. Even one poster claimed how his intelligence on the field is one of his strengths! Wow, I'm still taken back by that comment. His quick reaction time doesn't show a high level of mental prowess to me... actually it makes it evident that he's playing automatic and not putting much thought into the play at all!
He's immediately firing based on what he sees pre-snap. Thankfully he's got the best Wr's to accomodate this style of play. They have the speed to create the immediate space.
