what about McQuarters at CB?

I always liked that guy, yet he seems to have a terrible reputation around the league.

Again, I dont think were looking for a #3/4 DB, were looking for a solid #2. Still, I think hes better than Mario Edwards who will have a big role in our secondary this year.

The more I've looked into this, the more I think the Bears hold onto McQuarters. They didn't draft a corner this year, and they are one injury away from being in the exact same situation we are at CB. of course, the Bears have been known to make boneheaded personnel decisions before, but I'm not holding my breath on McQ's becoming available.

I really doubt that that Chicago will end up releasing McQuarters, but if they do I think we should DEFINITELY consider picking him up if it's for a reasonable price. I don't think it would be a good idea at all to trade draft picks for him, and I also don't think it would be wise to overpay him (which I'm sure some team out there in need of a CB will if he becomes available). So my guess would be he stays with Chicago or someone else either trades for him or picks him up for what I'm expecting to be a ridiculous amount of money.

To me, picking up McQuarters would afford us the opportunity to dump Reggie Howard, which we were looking at possibly doing anyway before Poole hurt his ACL.

McQuarters is fast and he's pretty decent. In 2005 he's due a salary of $3.05 million, and in 2006 he is due a salary of $3.45 million. That is the end of his contract.

If you want a one year Reggie Howard solution to a problem presented by Poole's injury, McQuarters represents exactly that. Don't pay attention to his 2006 salary, because we could cut him after 2005 and not have any penalties. Basically, it would be like paying a 7th round pick, and $3 million of 2005 salary cap space (which we have in abundance), for a temporary solution that would allow us to fix a long-term problem, the problem being that Reggie Howard was signed by a previous regime to a pretty sizable contract that he likely does not deserve.

The only reason I would not do this would be if we really want to get Randy McMichael signed to a long term deal and would like to use our 2005 salary cap space to make the future years of the deal more palatable (ie. 2005 roster bonus instead of signing bonus). But, what I am hearing is that the coaching staff wants to let Randy play out his deal, and then franchise him next offseason. So, given that, I would be all over McQuarters.

And btw the Bears just have too much invested in the CB position to keep paying R.W. these high salaries. That is why they are getting rid of him. They already have Charles Tillman and Jerry Azumah, both of which are worthy of starting and are actually very good starters, and Nathan Vasher has shown a heck of a lot of promise and may end up better than all of them, so they would like to move him up the depth chart to nickel back. They have guys like Todd McMillon and Alphonso Marshall capable of filling in for dime duties.

If RM and the fins can't get a deal done watch the TE in Georgia now. Pope is his name iI believe. Much bigger, taller and juist as fast it seems. I hope we get a deal done w/ Randy before this season begins. He should have a monster year w/Ferotte throwing the pigskin and teams knowing we will throw the ball. We will have more big plays this year than the last 2 regimes combined.

Only problem with cutting Howard if the phins did sign someone is the $3.75 million in signing bonus acceleration while his cap hit this year is $1.75 million. Even after June 1st I don't see a real savings and we'd be biting the bullet in 2 seasons. I'd carry his contract this year and see how he plays and force a restructure the following year on his base salaries.

IMO = Saban is noy going to trade away any draft picks(wanny did enough of that), Howard wont gey cut b/c of his cap hit, and t=bock will probably sign a one deal for the vet. min.

The Bears' asking price for veteran cornerback R.W. McQuarters is so low, league sources say it's a foregone conclusion he will not be with the team when training camp opens in 10 weeks.

All a team has to do is pony up with the pick and take on his huge salary. The money is the reason he's only worth a seventh. Too much money for us to go after him. We just got some cap space from our secondary by letting Surtain go, now we're gonna get it back for an inferior player????

hes a definate starter. as it stands now, IMO, the fins only have 1 definate starting CB.

your looking for a staring CB to replace an injured player. McQuarters would be a hell of a pick up.

Are you forgetting that Howard started for the SB team a year ago ? We have two starters, we just don't have a lot beyond that. We are also weak at safety..

However, McQuarters would be an upgrade to our CB crew. Would probably start opposite Madison. But the question is that he probably wouldn't fit long term for what Saban is looking for. I doubt that he'd trade for him, rather just wait to see if he is released and then take a pass at him...still the issue with RW is money and a long term contract and I just don't think he'll see it here...

I would definitely look at McQuarters- after he is released. his price tag will be potentialy cheapr than law's and he returns kicks as well. Why has he fallen out of favor in chi town. never mind I look it up myself...

That guy is worth a trade for a draft pick. Id give up a 5th rounder for him. Have you seen him play? He's fast and always in good position.

McQuarters sounds alot better than Howard to me. But id prefer we wait for him to be cut then send anything the Bears way.
