what about McQuarters at CB?

 We should definitely wait for him to be cut. If they don't cut him, we should stick with what we have or move on elsewhere.

To me, picking up McQuarters would afford us the opportunity to dump Reggie Howard, which we were looking at possibly doing anyway before Poole hurt his ACL.

McQuarters is fast and he's pretty decent. In 2005 he's due a salary of $3.05 million, and in 2006 he is due a salary of $3.45 million. That is the end of his contract.

If you want a one year Reggie Howard solution to a problem presented by Poole's injury, McQuarters represents exactly that. Don't pay attention to his 2006 salary, because we could cut him after 2005 and not have any penalties. Basically, it would be like paying a 7th round pick, and $3 million of 2005 salary cap space (which we have in abundance), for a temporary solution that would allow us to fix a long-term problem, the problem being that Reggie Howard was signed by a previous regime to a pretty sizable contract that he likely does not deserve.

The only reason I would not do this would be if we really want to get Randy McMichael signed to a long term deal and would like to use our 2005 salary cap space to make the future years of the deal more palatable (ie. 2005 roster bonus instead of signing bonus). But, what I am hearing is that the coaching staff wants to let Randy play out his deal, and then franchise him next offseason. So, given that, I would be all over McQuarters.

And btw the Bears just have too much invested in the CB position to keep paying R.W. these high salaries. That is why they are getting rid of him. They already have Charles Tillman and Jerry Azumah, both of which are worthy of starting and are actually very good starters, and Nathan Vasher has shown a heck of a lot of promise and may end up better than all of them, so they would like to move him up the depth chart to nickel back. They have guys like Todd McMillon and Alphonso Marshall capable of filling in for dime duties.

Since when were we looking to dump Howard? First I've heard of this...especially since it makes no sense financially to do so...

hes a definate starter. as it stands now, IMO, the fins only have 1 definate starting CB.

your looking for a staring CB to replace an injured player. McQuarters would be a hell of a pick up.

Madison and Howard. Howard started for the Panthers 2 seasons ago

and played solid on a defence that carried the team to the SB i may add..

I think we are fine with what we have if we add TBuck for depth.

Saban is not Wanny. We no longer play the bidding game at the drop of a hat. And, we now value ALL draft picks.

yea but i mean, a 7th rd pick, cmon, I'd do that in a heartbeat.

7th pick and 2 year contract for 6 mill....Id wait to see if he gets cut.

If the Bears will make it a conditional 7th with the condition being that he makes the team, I don't see the downside here. We do have two 7th rounders, and it really would be best to get him on board quickly and to be able to negotiate a contract with him without being bid against. He looks like value to me at something like our 7th (keeping the Packer 7th) with a restructured 3 year deal that lets him get up to $3 million a year through incentives but pays him a base of about $1 million per with a $2 million signing bonus to be prorated through that time. Let he and Howard battle it out, and potentially cut the loser next year when Poole is healthy and/or Daniels proves himself worthy of committing to.

I really like Mcquarters as a player and he is so atletic. I think Howard will be pretty solid in Saban scheme, he doesn't excel at man coverages, but still with pooles injury we need more solid depth and mario edwards doesn't cut it imo. McQuarters could be a potential STEAL.

The Bears' asking price for veteran cornerback R.W. McQuarters is so low, league sources say it's a foregone conclusion he will not be with the team when training camp opens in 10 weeks.

Sounds like getting him would not be a problem. I would like to have him he is a good solid CB.

Basically he was never the #1 the Bears were hoping he'd be however he is a good-very good #2 CB. Plus the Fins have to realize that McQuarters never had a pass rush in Chicago. The only pass rush they had left after 02 and that was Colvin.

Someone suggested a Jeff Zgonina(sp? ) for McQuarters trade. I don't know how bad the Bears need another DT for depth, but with the cap savings from cutting Zgonina (was it about $1.5 million?) it would pay for most of McQuarters salary this year. We can always cut him later with NO cap hit if Poole gets back healthy next year, as there would be no signing bonus.

McQuarters and Keith Traylor, add T-Buck in for more depth, and the defense is looking good. Well, maybe a safety too.

We shouldn't wait for McQuarters to be let go. Who wants to get into a bidding war? Trading a seventh round pick for McQuarters is a worthwhile investment. Afterall, don't we have two seventh round picks in next year's draft? ;)
