What to do with Jake Long?

Jake needs to be allowed to test the market. We can get another OT in the second round, a la Martin.

Hey you try to sign him to a honest and modest contract just like Ireland did with C. Wake and P. Saloi. Long will demand big bucks and at worst you franchise him until you have a replacement in the fold. One of our largest concerns is that stat wise this team is playing really well but that means coughing up some big bucks not just for Long but we have Hartline, Starks, S Smith and some others to consider resigning so all that cap money could get real thin real quick if we spend it on the our own players which is preferable.

You're never getting a 1st for Long in that position. You never tag expecting a trade. You certainly are open to it, but you don't do it NOT expecting him to be on your team otherwise if you have already put into motion the "replacement plan" into place other teams will realize this and you have a game of chess for value vs perceived value.

"Why offer a 1st when the team wants to dump his salary and just get value? Offer a 3rd. They'll bite!" - That's the mentality every single team interested in Jake Long (which, we are not sure is a very strong market, by the way)

A friend brought up a good point recently when discussing Jake Long. If Ireland is still around, he thinks he keeps Jake Long, simply because it'd be impossible to cut the player they drafted over Matt Ryan. You have to keep some semblance of delusion that Long is still playing at an elite level and pay him as such.

If Jake would take a re-up on his current deal, I'd probably do it. Even then it's a bit much, but why mess with what appears to be a great thing.

The problem is that you are assuming every single team in the nfl is only willing to offer a 3rd rounder. There are MANY teams that will jump at the idea of getting Jake Long. Personally, I think they will resign JL for a modest contract. If he want's to be a leader of this team than he should take a paycut like everyone else.

Ireland has said time and time again that Jake Long isnt going anywhere. If that isnt enough to convince you, then let me ask this....is there anyone we can get in free agency or in the draft that can replace his skill set? Definitely not. If we can afford him (wich we clearly can), then you sign him.

For those who want to let him walk, whats your replacement plan? Moving Martin to LT just creates a hole at RT.

The fact of the matter is, individual players do get paid a chunk of their teams total salary. That money usually goes to quarterbacks or pass rushers. Thing is, we dont need to worry about dropping big money for our quarterback for another 2-3 years. Why not resign Long now and worry about his contract 3 years from now? ...our front office cant figure this all out in the offseason, we have bigger problems then resigning our left tackle.

I think our QB pay compensation situation is a very good point. In no way would you want to trade Long unless you needed to.

This is a very crazy thought, offer Jake to the Jets straight up for Revis. Contracts would be a wash,Martin to Left tackle ,draft a right tackle. Revis is a question mark with the knee, however even if he comes back 1/2step slower he is still the best cb in the league. Sparano loves Jake

If he is still going to be the best cb in the league why would they trade him?

What the hell? So I've been told finding a quality LT is just as hard as finding a good quaterback. We spent the number 1 overall pick on him due to the importance of his position and fans are saying "let him walk" and "he's been average"...Goodness people, resign this man and fill other holes rather than make more. Jake needs to retire a fin considering he has played well, has become a leader on this team and we invested the 1st overall pick on him.
