What was the most disapointing loss in Dolphin history?

The heartbreakers are the games we should have won because we were the better team especially when they are playoff games.

The 85 championship game against the Pats falls in that category. We should have won that game and I am sure we could have beaten the Bears again in the SB since we matched up very well against them.

We were the better team in that 51-45 loss to the Jets in 86 which we proved later that year when we got our revenge 45-3 .

All the other games you mentioned are right up there too.

I agree, the loss to the Patriots back in 2002 was just awful. I'd put that right up their with all of them, that was gutwrenching, i almost cried i swear.

I was there, I did cry.

Most disappointing loss for me personally was the AFC Championship loss to the Bills in Miami.

Most disappointing loss for the franchise has to be that AFC Championship against the Patsies.

1/2/82 Loss to SD in OT
1/30/83 Loss to Redskins in SB XVIII - I live in Redskin Country
1/12/86 Loss to NE in Championship Game - We would have beaten the Bears
1/17/93 AFC Championship game loss to Bill at home
1/8/95 22-21 SD playoff loss
12/30/96 Loss to Bills - Goodbye Don
10/27/96 Loss to Dallas - I believed in Jimmy and this ended season in my mind
10/27/97 OT Loss to 0-7 Bears on MNF game that was moved because of World Series
12/30/02 Patriots loss, ends season...and I was rooting for the Packers, hopeless
9/7/03 Opening day loss to Texans

But the winner is:
10/23/00 Monday Night Meltdown

wow....never been so mad in my life!

I was physically sick after that game.

:jetssuck:

That one and Dan's last game against Jacksonville take the cake for the worst losses were the most disappointing gamres I've witnessed.

For me......its the 1985 AFC Championship game at the Orange Bowl, the year the Bears were dominant and only lost to Marino and the Dolphins on Monday night, we should have beaten the Pats that day and Marino should have had his second crack at a Superbowl win against that great Bears team he had already beaten....instead the Dolphins fumbled the ball 5 or 6 times(can't remember which one) and the Patsies went on to get slaughtered in Superbowl XX.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read the thread title.

:yeahthat: Without a doubt, especially with where I live...

Boy did you hit the nail on the head.
That without a doubt was the most dissapointing loss.

That team was better than the Patsies but played one of the sloppiest games I've ever seen. It was definitely Marinos best shot at a title. Adding insult to injury it was the last game ever played at the Orange Bowl putting an everlasting damper on the Phins impressive success while playing in the Orange Bowl.

My father on the other hand would say the 74 playoff loss to the Raiders, fortunately I was young enough that I barely remember that travesty!

3) Some younger fans might say the 62-7 playoff loss to JAX that ended the Johnson era, for me its not the most disapointing because I didn't feel we were good enough that year anyway.

WOW, I'm with you. Also in 2001 we lost to the Ravens at home. In that game James McKnight dropped a deep ball in which Fiedler hit him on the shoulder pad. Many fans gave him an extremely hard time for that drop. Not me, as I felt exactly the same way you feel about that Jags game. Had we beaten Baltimore, Zach would have been out the following week. We would have gotten killed.

The 28-26 playoff loss to Oakland in the 1974 playoffs. We were the 2 time defending super bowl campions, and I did not think it was possible we could be beat. We had all our top guys playing who helped us win the previous 2 super bowls. After Csonka, Kick and Warefield left the next year for the World Football League, we were never the same. I was 9 years old and it was my first season as a Dolphin fan. I have seen all the other losses discussed in this thread, and some really hurt, but none hurt me as bad a this one. It was the last game played by the Dolphins as the world champions. I hope Saban can lead us back to the promised land.

Shoulder pad...

He tried to catch it with his neck... what an idiot. (McKinght I mean, not you :) )

That's one guy I don't miss. Another guy I don't miss is the guy that brought him, and every other former Dallas and/or Chicago player we had here...

All this Marino talk got me to thinking about this.....obviously there are many candidates for this.

1) The playoff loss to Oakland 28-26 in the 1974 playoffs where the Dolphins were trying for an unprecented third consecutive Superbowl title, everyone must remember the Stabler throw at the end with Vern Den Herder dragging him down.

2) The triple overtime playoff loss to San Diego in 1981 41-38.

3) Some younger fans might say the 62-7 playoff loss to JAX that ended the Johnson era, for me its not the most disapointing because I didn't feel we were good enough that year anyway.

Blowing an 11 point lead to the Pats with 3 minutes to go was tough to watch, the SB loss to SF was painful but somewhat anticipated, but the "one that made me sick to my stomach-couldn't sleep for another 5 hours-couldn't think straight the next day and still makes me want to puke today" disappointing loss is the Monday Night-mare-acle.

I've never seen a team flat out dominate a game like the Fins did that game and still lose. They ran whever they wanted, they had big pass plays, they had great special teams play. It was all there. They flat out choked. They drove the green on a par 4 and four putted for bogey. They were so afraid of messing that beutiful game up that they did exactly that. It spoke volumes for the team's mental toughness at the time. Biggest choke of all time.
