Why Are Out Of Towners Still Dolphans?

When I was 5 my father made me sit with him and watch a few games...baseball,football,hockey and basketball. I think he was hoping for a boy to love sports as much as him and alas my brother was a bookworm. I watched and chose my teams off their uniforms...nothing else as I really didnt know what was going on. 42 years later The Reds,Dolphins, Sixers and Flyers are all still my favorite teams. Right here near Buffalo NY. #loyalty

I started watching the Phins when I was 3 years old. Why? Dan Marino. Loved him until his retirement. At that point I was 10 years old. That would have been the point to jump off the wagon because I was born and raised in TN. I still live in TN. Even as a kid watching the Titans go to the Super Bowl against the Rams I was a Dolphins fan. I do pull for the Titans when they play basically anyone but the Phins (hope they beat the Jets this year), but if you ask me who is my team it's the fins. So, why? I guess because I'm a loyal person and I couldn't imagine pulling for anyone else or wearing their gear on Sundays. I don't even own a Titans shirt.

Great thread!

I have only liked two NFL teams. At first, I was a Cowboys fan because I like a little rivalry on Sundays and my Dad was a Redskins fan. Back then (1970's), in Washington DC, they were on TV a lot so I didn't have a lot to choose from if I wanted to see a game once in a while. I know some will be a little pissed with me, but I came to the Dolphins when Jimmy Johnson did. I thought Jerry Jones treated Johnson like crap after he won the Superbowls, so when Jimmy left, I did too. Along with everybody else, I am a little disappointed with Johnson and his time with the fins, but I am still happy to be a fins fan. I love the fins, and although it has been a challenge to stay positive all the time I still have no regrets because when we do turn it around and really start to make some noise it will be all the sweeter.

The only other team I like is the Magic. I live in a small town south of Orlando called St. Cloud. The Magic are the home team, so naturally I have been a fan since the start of the franchise.

Go Dolphins!

Go Magic!

Steve :-)

Was born into a Fins family and here youre pretty much either a Fins fan or an anti-fins.

Theres a decent Steelers and 49ers base, but they all just sprung up because of people going against the norm with teams back in the day, then raising their kids into it.

I'm a local and gonna stick with all Miami teams for life, even the Marlins. However, there are many Out of Town fans who have stuck with the Phins through many years of disappointment, when It would be so easy to change to a different team.

Why?

I left south Florida in 05. I've moved on from the panthers, but am a dolphin fan for life. I didn't miss a game during the 1-15 year. I've lived and died with this team for 20+ years and that's not going to change. If/when this teams starts to become successful it will taste that much sweeter. Until then, "next year" will always be better.

I have no respect for bandwagon fans in any sport. It shows a lack of character imo.

Telling my age here but I became Phins fan before they even won the two Super Bowls. It sort of started with my father being an O.J. Simpson fan. He didn't really care for the Bills but loved him some O.J. I was a Mercury Morris fanatic. Pops would tease me about how much the Juice was going to wreck Miami and for the most part, he was right. Juice did normally get his. But, they lost more often than not during those days when facing Miami. First quarter Pops would be talking much smack and then be almost silent in the 4th..... :D

dude, Miami went 20-0 against Buffalo during the 70s. The only team in NFL history to do that to another divisional opponent, O.J. may have had a few good games against Miami, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't on the winning end very often.

I 1st started watching the NFL when I was around 8. it was 1972, the phins were my older brothers team, thats what we watched. I cant see changing
teams. so my team is my team. the 80's were great.
also, living in Conn, what better team to like than Miami? I try to get down there yearly to a game. much better than any of these cold weather cities.

1970: 3 channels 1 no football 1 falcons suck 1 dolphins beginning of the shula era. Only get 1 team in life. fins sixers braves and clemson tigers. makes it that much better when they make a run. Anybody can change teams. Earn it.

Not a bandwagon fan that just chooses teams that are currently winning. As with any team there are going to be ups and downs, you just need to stick with them. We have had a recent bad past, but hopefully it seems they are finally turning the corner.

This. Some of us are just really loyal. I won't even play as another team in Madden. Even though my buddies always choose the best rated teams.

As I said here before I`ve been a Fin fan since the Csonka days, however I still remain a fan of my college (WVU)
team & their players in the NFL.........as you can surmise awkward situations can arise here

I couldn't be more removed living in Vancouver, Canada...literally the opposite corner of North America. Simply I would jump ship if I could, but overtime you get a little too attached and simply can't support a team the same way. It's like loving an ex-girlfriend and then getting in another relationship hahaha. I'd love to support a city and all the teams in it...I'd say my favorite sports city would be Chicago if I could start all over. Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks and Bulls.

As far as I can remember I became a phins fan for superficial reasons; like probably the colors and logo (hey I was like 7 or 8). But soon I learned about Marino and the Marks bros, and soon enough the phins became far and away my favorite sports team and I've never even thought about switching to another. I don't even have a second favorite team. I actually run into a surprising number of phins fans here in upstate NY, including a few co-workers.

I remember jumping up and down in the backseat of the car (in Miami) when I was 8 years old, when they won the 72 Super Bowl. Living in Denver through the years it would be easy to jump ship to the Broncos, but I just don't have it in me. Always will be a fin fan and enjoy this site. I also remember when the Dolphin Digest was my only source of up to date Dolphin news. Also, they will be better next year....................
