Forgot about Heupel. I thought we drafted Druckenmiller then traded him to SF? You could be right, I probably have it mixed up.
But all that goes back to the crux of the problem. We dont invest quality draft picks into the QB spot, and in the few times we did, we picked poorly. Pat White was the biggest headscratcher of them all.
Beck was already like 28 years old when we drafted him, and Henne....well....i'll just. leave. that. one. alone....
He got drafted by SF, and they traded him to us in like 1999 I think. Long time ago, my memory's a bit hazy, but I think that's how it went down. Pat White was a head-scratcher, because it seems we drafted him only to run the Wildcat (or WildPat, durrhurrhurr) offense, which made no sense, as the league had it all figured out by teh end of the 2008 offense.
Beck was an old man, and with Cameron out, didn't fit the team's plans. Henne...I'll admit, I saw some potential in the kid...thought he could be something, especially after that Jets game in 2009, but man, he really hit a wall and hit it hard.
You're absolutely right though, it was our problem, and it'll continue to be a problem. Look at the issues we ran into with Wannstache. We had Fiedler, Fiedler was his guy, and nothing was going to move him from it. I think Matt Hasselbeck was originally his target, but, Seattle came in and took him from us (Damn you Mike Holmgren), but we never tried to upgrade, other than bringing in some also-rans as backups, such as Ray Lucas or Brian Griese, and it really cost us, especially with the great defense we had during that time, and the awesome run game we had too.
We'll run into problems if we don't draft and develop another QB now, too. I'd draft one every year if I could, if only to spin him off to get a high draft pick (or two or three) to a QB needy team, like the Falcons did with Schaub...or the Packers did all those years with Ron Wolf running things. Sooner or later, time's going to catch up with Tannehill, and we need to have a solid transition plan in place.
