this would have been tannehill's breakout season

He did until his defense took two post play personal fouls for 30 yards to put Pitt in range for the winning FG - LOL. It's as if he tried NOT to win big games.

Haha. Yep. And that's what he gets for trying to overlook player character concerns. Hasn't learned his lesson either with the recent selection of Mixon.

I suspect that teams shut down the opposing QB in three primary ways: 1) by scoring lots of points themselves, which makes opposing QBs have to pass and tips off the defense as to how to better defend against them, 2) with a strong pass rush, and 3) with a good secondary.

(1) How does the other team try to stop that? DEFENSE. So, if a team's defense is bad, it impacts ITS OWN QB by putting him in unfavorable situations.

(2) How does a team counter a strong pass rush? PASS BLOCKING BY THE OL. If a team's OL is bad, it impacts its QB because even mediocre pass defenses can generate pressure.

(3) How does a team counter a good secondary? PASS BLOCKING BY THE OL AND EFFECTIVE RECEIVERS.

What have we learned? FOOTBALL IS A TEAM SPORT.

No doubt. But we also know that there is wide variation in the average salaries paid to players, as a function of the positions they play. There's a reason for that. The players earning the bigger salaries are more important to winning, even though they're playing a team game.

And which player tops the list? I'm sure we all know.

Take a care to guess which organization has been the most successful for the past 15+ years and where their QB is ranked salary wise in the NFL?

"Here I am contradicting myself, but I don't really mean it."

Sure, whatever you say. ;)

How is it a contradiction to say that Philbin stunted Tannehill's growth, but also that Tannehill has done very little in the NFL in six seasons?

No one disputes that or the fact that QBs playing at a elite level win a low percentage of the SBs (5 of the last 17).

Why does Joe Flacco have the same number of SB wins as Rodgers, Brees, and the elite version of Peyton Manning (and more than Dan Marino)?

Why does Trent Dilfer have the same number of SB wins as Kurt Warner?

Why did this Peyton Manning win a SB: [198 of 331 59.8% 2249 yards 67.9 QB Rating] but this one did not: [450 of 659 68.3% 5477 yards 115.1 QB Rating]

A GOAT tier quarterback like Tom Brady taking hometown discounts isn't going to be the norm for most NFL teams. That's a cheat code.

The correlation between passer rating differential and win percentage in the league since 2004 (the year the rules changed to favor the passing game) is a staggering 0.92, which means that 85% of the variation in win percentage in the NFL is accounted for by quarterback play, your own and the opposing team's.

Now, the only way one gets around that finding is by arguing that passer rating isn't a measure of quarterback play.

If so, then we have to abandon the idea that Ryan Tannehill has played better individually, as measured by his passer ratings, when his offensive line has been healthy.

Thill17 is starter in nfl for now or next 2 to 3 yr with so many terrible qb play in nfl. Dolphins need draft qb next yr for future..thill17 will keep some fan hope up. But will never deliver when it matter the most....

Tom Brady, who regularly takes voluntary pay cuts.

Bingo. Because he knows what it takes to build a team, what it takes to win consistently, and that he can't do it all by himself via #QBwinz

Bill Lazor is kicked around like a can on here from Tannehill enthusiasts, but we scored the most points per game with him calling plays in like 20 years in 2014.

Lazor is a bum who stole pages from Kelly's playbook and lucked out that NFL's defenses hadn't quite caught on yet. Once they did in '15 his concepts, which he never adjusted or added wrinkles to, where a complete joke that allowed defenses to dictate his offense.
