I like Pitts, but there is no chance I’d draft a guy 3rd overall to use in 2 TE sets. I don’t see the value in drafting a guy that high and not using him as the focal point of the offense. Now, if we draft Pitts and line him up all over the field as a WR I can see the value in taking him 3rd. The kid is bigger and potentially faster than Mike Evans...just saying I see him as a #1 WR more than a TE. I’d prefer to see him and Gesicki always on the field together and not competing for snaps in the same role.
Gesicki is honestly not good enough to be an impediment to us drafting an absolutely elite TE prospect.
Pitts is def not a great blocker, but Gesicki is absolutely terrible there. I remember watching his block fail compilation videos on Twitter after we drafted him. You won't find those w Pitts.
That is why Gesicki has little use as an in-line TE. He also doesn't have the versatility to excel as an outside WR. This basically leaves him as a flex. And that is where he played 60% of his snaps last year.
That's the reason he ranked #26 in snaps among TE's, despite only missing one game. He is too limited.
Pitt's has so much more versatility regarding where he can be lined up. He also has youth on his side and possess the frame to add strength, which should help him as a blocker. He was only in the 230's as a sophomore and added 11 pounds last offseason. And it clearly didn't impact his speed.
Gesicki is in the last year of his contract and I'm not even sure how the team feels about him. We seem to spend a decent amount of money on other TE's in order to cover the things he's not capable of doing. We can always trade him if the Gesicki/Pitts pairing doesn't work out.
Either way, I don't think we should let the fact that we have a solid, yet limited TE, have any impact on what we do with the #3 pick. You don't let good prevent u from shooting for greatness.
I don't mean to s*** on Gesicki here. He's pretty damn good at the things he can do, and I respect what he brings to this team. I wouldn't be talking about replacing him if I didn't see an opportunity that I felt might be too good to pass up.
The bottom line is if you believe Pitts is an elite, or dare I say "generational"
, talent you pick him and figure it out later.
