anyone got a report on Roth so far?

Islandah, perhaps I didn't explain myself properly.

When I read your post, I thought the "blah, blah, blah" was disrespectful and stupid. But I kept it to myself, cause CK is a big boy AND you later apologized for it and explained yourself.

I'm cool, you're cool, CK's cool. I was just pointing out my initial response, cause you were asking what the "dis" was.

Know what makes me laugh out loud? The fact that CK and I have continued our debate in a civil and polite manner while others get their panties in a twist for a perceived disrespectful comment.

I will explain for them, as CK obviously doesn't seem to need it. When I said "blah, blah, blah," it was meant to convey "you can make whatever argument you want, but at the end of the day, some perform in the NFL, and some don't". It didn't mean, nor do I think CK took it that way, "Your thoughts are stupid, or meaningless, or unimportant." However, I specifically reiterated that in a subsequent post. I never got the feeling from CK that he felt disrespected. Now saying someone showed a display of stupidity, now that would be disrespectful.

Yeah I don't think anyone's gettin their panties in a bunch. Thejetssuck seems like he was just kind of scrolling down the thread, found your post and replied before he read further. I doubt he saw where you apologized for any misperceptions. And Fin1 was just responding on point to one of your replies, no biggie there. And of course, Gardenhead was just explaining what both of the others (specifically thejetssuck) probably took offense to.

And for the record, I did actually take offense to it initially, but I'm a pretty stout observer of the TOS so I didn't flip my lid or anything...I tend to drop those kinds of things, believe it or not. Then I saw where you said that your statement might have been misleading you didn't mean it in a disrespectful way, and I understood what you meant so it was ok.

I think thejetssuck reacted to the post before reading further down, exactly how I kind of felt like reacting but I restrained myself a bit. No big deal. Everything's aired out.

I think a group hug is in order :D

The PBP blog really had some great things to say about Roth. From every report, it seems like he's put in alot of work over the offseason. I think between the added muscle, development of technique/skills (something roth admitted srtuggling with last year) , and the confidence he must be building from that and his success in camp, I would expect him to see him improve a good bit this year. Will he be a probowler? Almost certainly not, but I think he will make some plays this year, especially towards the ends of games when his motor will still be going and opposing o-lineman are dragging...sort of Trace Armstrong style.

BTW, the timing of that Darlington blog is too freakin funny.

Here's my perception of Matt Roth. When he's confident his first step is very quick, NFL caliber, and it will help him keep offensive tackles on their toes (ie. light on their feet) in pass pro. From there, he doesn't have many pass rush moves, which is a problem.

But he's got one damn good one! The bull rush. That's his move. He did it in college and it worked, and believe it or not he'll do it in the pros and it will work. Why? Because his initial step is quick enough to keep OTs light on their feet and from there he uses his power at the point to drive them backward.

He tried this as a rookie...but it's obvious that NFL OTs are not college OTs. To be sure, he would consistently drive them backward...but only to a certain point, where the two would remain locked up with Roth not really threatening the QB.

The good news is you could tell he was actually pretty close to breaking through. That's where the added 15 pounds of muscle comes in. That might give him the extra fire power to break through the resistance.

Think Trace Armstrong. His first step and bull rush were the basis for his pass rush abilities, and they only got better with age as he learned to string together other less perfect moves off the bull rush to get to the passer. What other part time DL do you know of that ever could have gotten 16.5 sacks in a season?

Will he be a Trace? Hopefully...probably not. But, that's the mold he's working toward.

I loved Trace...when he hit Flutie in the earhole I almost told my wife to go have sex with him.

I remember watching those highlights. He has one of the best first steps I have seen since I started watching college highlights.

I think the problem was people expected him to dominate like he did in the highlights. In the NFL you need other moves. Without the threat of any other move most NFL Offensive tackles are good enough to take on a bull rush. However if they know he might use another move that makes him have to think just enough for that quick step to work.

Plus I totally agree with CK. I do think the jump was so big that he started thinking instead of reacting. However due to his ability at the goalline gave me hope that he would be pretty good. Also sometimes he was just put in on running situation. I saw that as a positive since I thought he was going to be a push rushing specialist and it turns out as a rookie he is good against the run. Which meant to me if he can get the pass rushing part down, he will be an all around good defensive end.

That is correct, so my apologies islandah.:D

And according to Saban, and Kevin Carter amongst others, Roth has looked OUTSTANDING during training camp!! I said it before that the guy just needed a little bit of time to develop, much like that OTHER pro bowl DE we have on our team who really didn't do anythiing to spectacular his first few years in the league :
Year Team G Total Tckl Ast Sacks Int Yds Avg Lg TD Pass Def
1997 Miami Dolphins 13 42 30.0 12 5 0 0 0.0 0 0 4
1998 Miami Dolphins 16 50 34.0 16 9 0 0 0.0 0 0 8
1999 Miami Dolphins 15 45 29.0 16 2.5 1 0 0.0 0 0 3

Hmmmmmm, who could that person be???:goof:

to anyone who watched the Saban interview from yesterday which Matt was he talkin about ? i can never hear the reporters questions only the answers.... but i do recall coach sayen something along the lines of... "Matt looks way better than last season... he's a lil bigger, stronger" etc.

I guess it was Roth...

It was Roth.

I disagree that Taylor struggled early. He actually did really well in his rookie and sophomore years...14 total sacks, 92 tackles. It was obvious the dude had a motor and was already good to be an every down player. In 1999 he had a bad year though, he didn't have enough effective pass rush moves in the arsenal. I wonder if Cary Godette was teaching those guys anything down there, I know Trace Armstrong ended up the de facto DL coach. Clarence Brooks came on board and helped make Taylor into the player he is today.
