Clowney's asking price is dropping

This is correct.

But the question is...does he make the Fins a championship contender this year? If the answer is no (and it is), will he sign a multi-year deal?

If the answer to that is no, then don't sign him.

The easy answer is no, we are not a contender for the Super Bowl in 2020. We just aren’t. But I’m very curious how close that this incredibly young team can be.

Clowney swings the pendulum. He cares more about football than he’s given credit for too. His talent is still on par with the best in the game.

For those of you (not you Goat) hell bent on pointing out sacks as some kind of end all, you might want to check out this link with big play after big play Clowney makes because of his talent that don’t always show up on the stat sheet. That’s against one of the best OLs in the NFL and a top pick at LT in McGlinchey, who surely is praying JC doesn’t return to Sea.

And while watching those videos, try and remind yourself of how much more talented Christian Wilkins is than Al Woods.

And then there is the main draw for signing JC. The corners. He’s never played with a corner as good as Howard or Jones, let alone both them. If I were Clowney and I was looking at a one year deal, signing with the team that has the most talented set of CBs in the NFL makes a lot of sense. Sacks would pile up.

At the end of the day I don’t want to give out a bad a contract but if I can sign him to a little more money than Jarvis Landry makes, I think I’m getting a steal. Here we are 5 years removed from giving Suh $22-$23 mil. Still looks great by comparison.

I get why they should AND shouldn’t sign him.

If they do go hard after him, message received about their intentions.

Not sure why all you guys are giddy over a guy that had 3 sacks last year, has never had double digit sacks in a season, and has played in only 75 of a possible 96 games. Not to mention he rejected the Dolphins twice, first in the Houston trade that involved Tunsil and then again at the beginning of free agency this year.
He might not get lot sack but he show bring lot pressure off that edge. U

To state the obvious, this is a decision for Flo/Grier and, for now, I doubt there is even significant interest. A few of us have already said, Miami is probably done with expensive FAs, regardless of talent. Now, if JC or others can be had at Wlamart pricing, maybe, but I suspect any additional FAs will be from future cuts.

This is a well-written, well thought-out, cogent take.

Clowney is trying to collect money off his name, not his game. In his 6 years in the NFL, he has never even had double digit sacks (only 3 last year). His career highlight was when he hit a RB in the backfield so hard, his helmet came off. That was 8 years ago IN COLLEGE.
He's a nice player, but not the superstar he was touted to become when drafted. IMO, he's still living off the rush of that massive college hit.

While you make a valid point in regards to his talent, Clowney has made it fairly clear that he doesn’t want to play for the Dolphins. Obviously he will be a great addition to the defense of team he eventually signs with but I just don’t see that team being the Dolphins.

You are entitled to your opinion, of course. But Clowney is amazingly disruptive on defense. If you're just counting sacks, he averaged 8 a year for the three years beforehand. Last year he forced four fumbles, had a pick-six, and has a tremendous knack for wreaking havoc in the run game. He's not just a pass-rush specialist. He's a special player.

I will take clowney at $10 million on a year deal. Otherwise forget it. Dalvin Cook 100% no unless league minimum.

Who does he want to play for?

I’m sure 32 teams would be willing to pay him 32 differing amounts. Not sure you added anything to the conversation.

lol Everything you post... It’s like reading a bad beat writer opinion that’s 2 months old. So let’s be careful throwing rocks there mr glass.

to break it down for you, these guys refer to “getting paid” as getting a lot of money. He wants a lot of money. He will play for whoever will pay him 15mm, and word among inner circles is he’s a huge bridge burner.

This was all covered months ago but I’ll reiterate it all, to “add” to the conversation

Who does he want to play for?
I have no idea who he wants to play for but for some reason he had no interest in the Dolphins when he met with Flores and Grier when he was with the Texans. I assume he wants to sign with a playoff caliber team who Is willing to pay him the money he wants.

If he can’t get the money he is looking for this year, I guess he will be willing to sign a 1 year deal with a playoff team and he will hope to find a willing suitor during the 2021 free agency period.

With the uncertainty of the salary cap impact for the upcoming years due to the virus, I don't see any other big contracts being added at this time.

I genuinely believe this is overblown. The overwhelming majority of NFL income isn't at the gate. It's from TV contracts. If Covid-19 spikes (and I believe it will), and attendance is limited, that won't hurt as much as anticipated. Why? Because people will be watching on TV in record numbers. Look at the NASCAR viewership, for Pete's sake. It's literally up over 100%.
