Fire Ireland?

When the team wins and the players that are UNDER Contract, and were drafted or signed by Ireland do well, all of that would be different if we had a different GM.

I would not get rid of Ireland unless we could clearly get a better GM, which is not anywhere near as easy as the riot squad would have you believe.

I can't help but think of how much better this team would have been if Keller and the slot WR do not both get injured and if Martin doesn't become a eunuch in mid season

His drafts suck, his FA suck and he is an a-hole. I cant help but think of how much better this team would be if he hadn't wasted EVERY 2nd and 3rd round draft pick he has had and if he actually drafted playmakers in the first round. He has whiffed on way more FA than he has hit on. He is bottom tier GM by any metric - draft, FA and winning.

My OP was that I am worried that Ireland may see himself as a lame duck and may not be over-exuberant to make good decisions because of it, or even purposely not make good decisions because of it. It seems that most seem to think he wouldn't do that. I don't know him well enough personally to say he would or wouldn't be capable of it. But I seriously question the McKinnie move and the not paying Grimes decision, which made me wonder if Ireland has decided....f' it.....I'll sit here and play Candy Crush til the end of the season.

Or maybe another way of putting it....if Grimes goes elsewhere in FA and says, "well.....I never heard from the Dolphins all season, so when FA hit, rather then give them good faith negotiations, I just took the highest payday".....will you be happy with the decision to keep Ireland around for the last 2 months of the season? Or if McKinnie signs somewhere else for more than we had him signed for next season, and we have to replace 4 OL positions all at once....how will that feel?

Why fire him now?....the trade deadline has come and gone. They can hire a new GM in January before the Combines in Indy, which I believe is in Feb. Or March. I think the draft us now in May. Do it after the season.

what kind of cheese do you want with that?

You must eat LOTS & LOTS of cheese. :chuckle:

If you have a **** employee, do you keep him just because you don't know his replacement yet?

I doubt any of us have an employee where if we fire him/her it would mean a complete rebuild of our organization and if any of you do I am sure you would have a clear plan in place before letting them employee go.

I predict Jeff Ireland is never more than a head of scouting ever again anyway,

wow. i actually feel bad for the team that uses him.

kind of a creeping feeling of doom you cant shake.

First, why would a GM get rid of good players? Second, there isn't anyone on this team that isn't replaceable - we don't have a face of the franchise let alone anyone really elite. Who exactly are you worried about losing?

Again, nonsense. Doesn't mean a complete rebuild. That phrase is tossed around far too much here. Complete rebuild means you don't have a QB, you don't have an O-line (oh, wait), you have no playmakers whatsoever, and both sides of the ball need to be completely reworked. Simply not the case. What this team needs is depth, an offensive line that can get the job done, and more legitimate playmakers; all of which Ireland has completely failed to do in the time he's been here, despite the fact that the O-line has been a priority since day one. Inexcusible.

If they are planning on moving on from Ireland, which I bet they are, I guarantee they are already doing their homework on replacements. Fret not.

First all you need to do is look around the league at what happens when a new GM takes over. 90% or more of the time the team gets rebuilt from scratch. No GM wants to go down with another GMs players. Just the way it is and more often than not it doesn't turn out well.

Secondly I get the no ones irreplaceable. Its one of the reason I would be in favor or replacing Ireland if we had someone we knew was an upgrade. Just replacing him for the sake of replacing him is foolish. He's put together a team thats a lot closer to competing than people want to give him credit for. As I stated in an earlier post the only glaring needs I see are lack of running game and Pass pro. and both can be solved simply by fixing our Oline needs. And on top of it all all the key pieces are YOUNG. the team in general is YOUNG.

Not going to give you a thumbs down but I would like to point out that your plan is to simply have no plan other than cut irish at all costs. Again have a plan in place or expect another decade of pure fail.

Gaine being the assistant GM could run things as the interim GM for the remainder of the season, and once the season's over, he can interview for the job full time. He&Philbin do share a connection to the same HC, Kirk Ferentz. Gaine played for Ferentz as a TE, while Philbin was an assistant coach under Ferentz. If Ross keeps Philbin, and Joe goes to bat for Brian as our GM, i'm sure Ross will take that into consideration. Again if Ross keeps Philbin, but fires Jeff, Steve&Joe can sit down and compile a list of GM candidates for Ross to bring in and interview for the job.

Also add in the fact that it is very clear that Ireland and Philbin are completely incapable of working together. So, do you continue trying to force it to work? That usually works out well. Ask anybody who has stayed in a broken marriage "for the kids."

So if the team doesn't need a complete rebuild and as we both agree the main need is Oline why replace the guy who put that all together out of spite? have a plan on how to improve.

I beg some of you that want irish's head on a spike to remember back to the years prior to him. Not the Shula years or even the JJ years but the "lost years" inbtween. Things could be a WHOLE LOT F&^%ING Worse. Be Careful what you wish for you might just get it...

who is brian Gaine? Who was he before he came here? How much experience does he have being a GM? Did he work closely with someone who did?

I would rather still keep the guy I know can score a stud future DE in Jordan and never getting a bust in 1st round than take your chances on what you dont know. Visions of Randy Mueller and Cam Cameron and a 180 pound WR and his family.

Brian Gaine is our assistant GM who used to be a college TE under Kirk Ferentz, same man Philbin was an assistant coach for. He also has worked his way up through FO ranks to hold the position he now holds. Also, don't all GMs, the good ones and crappy ones have to start somewhere? To me he's an option as our GM.

How am I spiteful against Ireland? Always the extremes with some of you. First, I wanted him gone with Sparano because I wanted a clean start from the stench of Bill Fatcells. When stuck with him, I gave him a chance and even started to change my view of him. But there are simply too many negatives. You are acting like he's put together a Super Bowl team because he FINALLY addressed the most important position in football (not on the line, btw) and FINALLY gave him a couple of weapons, one of which he clearly overpaid for. The running game has gotten worse. The offensive line has gotten worse. The linebackers have gotten worse. We only have depth in the defensive line. He has landed more talent through FA than through the draft, which is never a good thing.

He drafted a kicker. A kicker! A kicker who sucks, btw. Instead of working on building depth in the many areas we need to build it, which is exactly what the mid-to-late rounds are for, he drafted a kicker. And we won't get into his tendency to draft injured players. Great, they may be good eventually. That's fine if it's an occasional issue, but when it's the majority of the top half of your draft, that's a problem.

"Things could be worse." That's exactly the type of outlook decades of mediocrity and **** football get you I guess. "I can't stop pissing my pants, but hey, at least it's not poop!" Guess what, things could be a WHOLE LOT ****ING BETTER.
