Darlington: Dolphins will take time with GM hire, might not be this week

Not a huge deal. Panthers took their sweet time as well.

It's been speculated that Miami is going to approach Scot McCloughan again to see if there's any interest. Probably also means Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith could be interviewed. Maybe even a Nick Caserio

It also boggles my mind how anybody can say Mangini is a good candidate let alone a brilliant mind.

I’m told Ray Farmer, for instance, was delightfully surprised by the situation in Miami. He really liked everyone, including Aponte/Philbin.

Farmer better like the situation. It is a prerequisite for the gig…unfortunately.

I got to be honest…I think Eric Mangini is in play here. Why the need to wait?
Why would Mangini be in play when the Dolphins stated clearly their intentions to be transparent with the candidate list, and the one made public does not have his name on it? No one wants Mangini, and the job decription released from Ross basically stated "proven experieince evaluating and selecting talent."

Regarding Mangina, some here think that if they repeat his name in enough threads it will happen....and of course if it did.... the forum would never hear the end of it.

Mangini has much more experience running an organization than any of these candidates. Not sure you can say any of these guys have more experience than he does. No problem arguing the upside of the interviewed candidates, but not the experience factor.

Because Mangini has a NFC Conference trip to get ready for.

Taking their time and not hiring a GM until at least another week is no surprise but expected. This week they should finish up or at least be almost done with their first round of interviews. Then they should narrow it down to 3 or so for their second round of interviews. I would say by the end of next week or the following week at the latest. This is the time table we should expect.

There are some good candidates we have yet to interview with McCloughan, Gamble, and Highsmith being 3 off the top of my head. The Mangini thing could be in play. Personally I hope not but I am biased based on his coaching experience and know nothing of how he would be in a GM role. Another name is Pioli. I know there's the situation with Peterson but I just can't see Ross allowing that to interfere with getting this thing right. I'm glad they are taking their time.

Question:

1. Does Steve Ross like and respect Eric Mangini? …Yes
2. Does Dawn Aponte have a professional relationship with Eric Mangini? …Yes
3. Can the team argue that Mangini has prior experience…more than the other candidates? ….Yes

To totally dismiss in this process is simply premature.

Aponte's sugar must be damn sweet.

If it takes longer than January 25th for Ross to hire a new GM then something would seem to be very wrong.

As for the Senior Bowl you do get to meet the various players and might get a feel for their intangibles (i.e. maturity level, leadership qualities, self-confidence, etc.). Things that are not always on game tape so I would expect that an NFL level GM would disagree for that reason at least that it is overblown.

Mangini also turned 2 huge assets the Browns had (5th overall pick and Braylon Edwards) into Kenyon Coleman, Abram Elam, Chansi Stuckey, and Jason Trusnick. Great ****ing eye for talent right there.. And yes, he's done a great job in a stacked FO with a stacked team that was put together by McGloughlan, Baalke, and Gamble.

Well, it wasn’t such an assumption last week when everyone acted like the job is radioactive. @PhilippeEde: Of course he's going to say that
