Dolphins coaches asked Incognito to toughen up Martin, sources say

Was also probably the hardest worker and the offensive line leader for the team. That's always who you go to when you need a team member to light a fire under someone's ass.

Which is part of the problem, not part of the reason what they did was smart.

The guy has a long standing history. Only in the last year or two had his reputation sort of shifted, after having spent the first 15 years of his football playing life as a thug. If the Dolphins assumed on the most recent snapshot of his behavior was the most important, they were dumb to think so. Obviously. Dumb to the point of negligence.

After all the crap that has gone on in the past month, how could you be? I supported Ireland longer than most people... I got in heated conversations with several posters defending Ireland as decent talent evaluator, and that we might end up replacing him only to find the next guy is worse... Well, I was proven wrong. I don't know if he is just snakebitten, or truly rotten at his job. It doesn't matter anymore. Everything he touches turns to ****. I was on board with a lot of the moves he made in the offseason, but guess what, they didn't bear out. That's all that matters, results. And it all culminated in this ****storm. He failed, that's all, time to move on.

Philbin, likewise, has proven not to be up to par. We expect better leadership. Even though he is still green, and some learning curve should be extended, he has the poor luck to have been hired by a GM on his last legs, and when he walks the plank, he is tied to him sinking down into the deep, dark abyss.

After this PR maelstrom, Ross has no choice but to fumigate Davie...

Needless to say, I disagree with everything you've said here. Surprise...

I can't even respect your position because you speak in such hyperbole.

Because the guy they asked to do the toughening up has a long standing, well-known history for being a psycho, is why.

Dont you know NFL lockerrooms are only supposed to be filled with psychopaths and sadists? The only way you build trust as a team is through threats, extortion, and fist fights. Duh.

Im getting a good chuckle at peoples mental image of an NFL lockerroom. The leagues own rules concerning workplace professionalism must chaff some like holy hell. Not to mention whistleblower protection laws. Pretty sure some are going to run into traffic when that narrative comes up.

Oh, now all of you trust Omar Kelly??? C'mon man. You think coaches around the league do not ask players to toughen up some of their teammates? Take off the blinders off for once. WE WERE ALL CRYING FOR MARTIN TO TOUGHEN UP, THE COACHES DID EVERYONE'S WISH, AND NOW EVERYONE IS STILL CRYING!

I for one am not proceeding under the assumption that the report is accurate. Omar Kelly is Omar Kelly. I'm just speculating in this particular thread as if it is.

I'm still curious as to what exactly they told him.

Did they say "Hey, tell him to get his ass in here for OTAs" or did they say "Hey, ride on this kid and get his head out of his ass?"

Because that's kind of a huge swing.

I don't think any coach is stupid enough to order a crazy man to "toughen up" a mentally unstable wimp who has tried to commit suicide 3 times and is on drugs.

There. 1 sentence sums up all the misinformation. None of this adds up to me.

Welcome to the desert of the real.

At this point, Ross needs to sit down with each player and unofficially offer them $20m each to STFU and go away. Sign away their rights to talk about the situation. I'm not kidding.

Hey, agree to disagree. In the end, none of it matters. Your opinion, my opinion... just opinions. RESULTS matter. And we haven't seen results in this town going on 13 years.

Ireland has been given more time to right this ship in that time span than any other GM or coach, and here we are with one of the worst PR disasters during that time span and a .500 record. That isn't progress, that's regression.

I also haven't seen anything from Philbin and the coaching staff that leads me to believe they are capable of greatness. He may very well be a decent coach, one capable of mounting a playoff season here and there. But Philbin isn't an inspiring guy, he isn't a brilliant strategist, he is just a guy. I won't lose any sleep if he goes down with the Ireland's sinking ship...

why is that a huge swing??? the tight end coach told fasano last year in hard knocks to ride/get after michael egnew...coaches tell players that they have a hard time reaching or getting a message across to help them out with this stuff all the time...

again though they don't all go jon martin over it...i feel bad for philbin here...getting so hozed

Do you really think Martin really thought Incognito was going to slap his mom in the face? the extortion you speak of happens in every NFL locker room, its actually common knowledge... 15 000$ is mild compared to other known events... And if he actually believed Incognito was going to slap his mom, he must not like her to much because he didn't do squat...

Because regardless of whether or not this happens with 31 other NFL teams, and regardless of the fact that the NFL actually promoted this stuff in the past as a great, compelling story (Hard Knocks), this is now totally out of control and nothing's going to stop it the need for blood has been satisfied.

Probably no different than what the TE coach asked Fasano to do with Egnew. They were all over this butt on Hard Knocks and rightfully so.
That case worked out a little better I'd say .... so far.
