Dolphins confident they can find TWO starting guards

"We don't have a middle in our draft."

we will once the comp picks are announced (I've been hearing a 3 and two 5ths).

OTC's Compensatory Pick Calculator is saying only a 3rd and a 5th (and NOT two 5th's)

Overall list:

Evaluation of Miami Dolphins 2017 Compensatory Picks:

The exact formula is supposed to be a secret, but essentially OTC suggests that the NFL lines up all your free agent losses against all your free agent gains and crosses one off from each category (in order of lowest to highest contract). All remaining "net losses" are added up across the league. The top 32 are given compensatory picks.

The Dolphins lost:

Olivier Vernon (Rank 20) - 3rd
Lamar Miller (Rank 216) - 5th
* Rishard Matthews (Rank 284) - 5th
* Derrick Shelby (Rank 378) - 6th
* Kelvin Sheppard (Rank 965) - 7th

Dolphins signed the following Qualifying UFA's

Andre Branch (Rank 477) - 6th
Isa Abdul-Quddus (Rank 309) - 6th
Sam Young (Rank 985) - 7th

The three signings negate the bottom three FA losses (Matthews, Shepard, Shelby) with *'s giving the Dolphins only 2 potential comp picks.

The rankings are the approximate order of contract size (to determine the round that comp would be given).

However, even OTC has a few bubble questions:

Kelvin Sheppard, formerly of the Dolphins, signed a one year, $840,000 deal under the minimum salary benefit with the Giants. Sheppard played 40.8% of the defensive snaps largely in a starting role for New York. Ranked 965th overall, I’m projecting that this is enough for Sheppard to qualify, but there is a very good chance that I may be wrong and he may not qualify.
Sam Young signed a one year, $910,000 deal with the Dolphins on March 9, $50,000 of which was a workout bonus that does not count in the compensatory formula. Young did not make Miami’s initial 53-man roster, but was re-signed on October 11 to the veteran minimum, a day after Week 5 ended. I have yet to find out if a qualifying CFA not on the roster for entire season also receives a docking to his APY in the compensatory formula. Even if his APY is a full $860,000, because he played so little (15.5% of the offensive snaps) he is right on the qualifying bubble as described above in the cutoffs table. I’m barely projecting that Young will qualify, but his qualification is the one I am the most uncertain about.
During the 2016 NFL Draft, the Vikings and Dolphins made a trade that included a condition on a 2017 4th round pick. If the Dolphins are awarded a 4th round comp pick in 2017, the Vikings will receive that pick; if not, they will receive the Dolphins’ regular 4th rounder. I’m projecting that the Dolphins will not receive a 4th round comp pick, but their projected 5th round comp pick for Lamar Miller (ranked 216th overall) is close enough to the 4th/5th cutoff at 196 that there’s a chance that Miller could be valued as a 4th.

The bubble questions is whether or not Sam Young qualifies as a UFA signing. If he does, then the Dolphins don't get an extra pick. Kelvin Sheppard may or may not qualify (but probably will). Lamar Miller's contract is on the bubble to being awarded either 4th or 5th round compensation.

Well to be fair, it shouldn't be that hard to find acceptable guards if you keep throwing picks and money at the position.

Note that I didn't even say 'good' guards. I said acceptable. That's how bad it's been, I'll happily settle for guys who won't kill 3 drives per game.

It's stated as though we've had competent guard play within the last decade and the subject has gone over our heads. Not even remotely the case.

Prove it.
Proof - Dallas Thomas, Billy Turnstile, Jamal Do-nothing - oh right, you are asking to prove we had competent play. Nevermind...

I just realized that I think you intend to keep updating your sig indefinitely. If so, very clever...

I wonder how many of you would be so eager to employ Richie Incognito if it had been your girlfriend's or sister's cooch he prodded with a golf club while she was just trying to make a living serving drinks.

It doesn't make sense to continually make lousy choices at guard. On every team there are trends and stats that fall well outside the league norm, sometimes for an extended period. Once they become well known they've generally already started to normalize. Bushrod may have been subpar but he wasn't a turnstile. So that's like topping it off the first tee instead of a whiff or shank. I know guys who have been quite relieved to top it off the first tee, given their history.

We should be fine at guard if we simply find the upward path toward the norm. I don't see any reason for the Dolphins employing scouts or general managers who are especially inept at that position.

Strength alongside strength sounds nice, like Lamp inside Tunsil for a decade or so. Toth in a later round could be a valuable swing reserve.

IMO it's not a great position to spend generously in free agency.

Only problem there is that Lamp would cost a 1st rounder. That's a high investment when Miami has glaring needs on defense. Not opposed to a high pick on the offensive line if other areas are addressed in free agency, but would prefer the other way around.

I do agree, the team doesn't need to spend big on guard. I would look for a better than serviceable player, though, and one who would be physical as a run blocker. How much would a Chance Warmack cost in comparison to the top guys?

The only coach to employ him after the Fins is just as big of a piece of **** as he is.

And he got very good play out of him. If I'm not mistaken his play was lauded by everyone including players who voted him one of the top 100 players one year in Buffalo. Given the media's complete slam job making that situation seem like it was all him and only home, I found it particularly impressive that the players chose to acknowledge his high level of play.

Say what you want, but he provided good guard play ... as opposed to Jerry who did not and Martin who was 8ncredibly bad at every OL position. We had run lanes when Richie played.

Easy Pease, just get an ex-Belichick Spyware kid to lie about who he is and what he is doing to infiltrate the draft rooms of teams like the Cowboys and Titans, take videos of their draft boards and scouting reports of guards, and use their analysis to draft good OL. Wait, that illegal espionage style has a name doesn't it .... rule-breaking? No, that's not it ... cheating? No, that doesn't sound right ... disreputable? No, that isn't the name I was thinking of ... criminal? No, that doesn't ring a bell ... Oh yeah! I remember! It's called "The Patriot Way" ... yeah, that's it.

Give me the best scheme fit of Warford, Leary, Womack and Pasztor and I'll be happy.

I never said he was great, but in comparison to what we had at the position he was functional and performed better than highly invested draft picks we have wasted over the years.

Should give people more confidence that you don't need a top tier pick/FA to fill the guard void. A lot has to do with scheme and the coach knowing the type of player he covets.

At least I feel we have that here.

Bushrod was THE WORST RUN BLOCKING GUARD in the NFL. Why would we want him back for crying out loud??!!
