Dolphins sign Earl Mitchell

They are expected to show interest in Earl Mitchell, a 14-game starter last season for the Texans. Mitchell, 26, could be in high demand, as teams reportedly project him not only as a 3-4 nose tackle but possibly a better fit at 4-3 defensive tackle. ESPN analyst Bill Polian, a former mentor to Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco, is especially high on Mitchell.

Polian gave an "A" grade to six free agents.

Mitchell, a 2010 third-round draft pick, was one of them.

That's from an article about the Chargers pursuing him. Really doesn't give a ton of info but it sounds like the thought was he'd receive a good amount of attention from teams once he hit the market. I don't know much about him but sounds like a good signing from people on the board.

This reminds me A LOT of when Starks signed here. He was a relatively underappreciated and somewhat unknown to the casual fan in Tennessee. Here's hoping Mitchell has the same productivity, if not more...

Solid signing. He took on blockers to free up JJ Watt. I dont remember the stats exactly but teams ran for over 1 yard less per carry when Mitchell was on the field. Very under the radar and relatively cheap

AWSOME!!!!

He is on my favorite f/a list, guys that i hope we can haul in. he is a TREMENDOUS player and young AND healthy!!

he can play nose or dt equally well. has some pass rush also which a lot of dt's dont.

TYSON JACKSON is my next on the d-line list. he, like mitchell is versatile and can play 2 positions equally well, DE & DT!! that replaces st5ark as he wore the same 2 hats.

DT hopefulls in this order:

mitchell
jackson
joseph

Except that with Ellerbe and Wheeler, most people were like, WTF.

Umm no, I remember it clearly, most people praised Ireland for being aggressive and getting rid of "lazy" Dansby and replacing him with the Super Bowl champion and Ray Lewis heir apparent Ellerbe. There actually wasn't much criticism. The Wheeler signing either.

Interesting, hope he is at least comparable to the production we got from Big Paul and Starks over the gears

He was surprisingly productive as a NT for Houston. 48 tackles, 1.5 sacks. That's a lot of tackles for a NT in a 3-4. Of course it's hard to determine how he'll do in a 4-3 with different assignments and responsibilities but little I've seen on tape looks like he'll be a good fit. Actually looks a lot like Starks from what I've seen...only half the price.

i wasnt. i liked elerbe at the time but wasnt drooling at all the initial moves like the homers.

Looove this signing! 4 mil is solid too. GREAT START!

Outstanding!

Miami has now dealt with all of its key FA needs (as opposed to wants) - resigning its shutdown corner Grimes, signing a top LT to protect T-Hill's blindside, and filling in the starting slots at DT and SS.

Everything else in FA is gravy

Official. Rotoworld -

Dolphins signed DT Earl Mitchell to a four-year, $16 million contract.
The deal includes $9 million guaranteed. Mitchell, 26, started 14 games last season, racking up 48 tackles and 1.5 sacks. As an ideal one-gap 4-3 player, he was widely considered one of the top "sleepers" in free agency. The Dolphins outbid the Chargers to land Mitchell.
