Frerotte article on cnnsi (interesting saban comments)

the problem is that we had already seen Gussies BEST efforts and KNEW that there was no more upside than that. Saban rolled the dice and tried to give us greater potential at that position. Had our o-line not sucked so bad, perhaps Daunte would have done better, mostly, I beleive that no matter who was in the first 6 games they would have been tramatized.

We have, IMO, now seen the best "upside" that we can expect from Joey... and it's just not good enough...much like Gussie. I would have loved to see Gussie stay on as our backup, but he and Sage saw greener pastures. So far, neither has set anybody on fire, so who's to say what was the best course of action. I am just glad as I can be that Saban actually addressed the qb situation, win lose or draw...he did SOMETHING. Unlike the "past" regimes.

I agree with most of this except for the part about Gus seeing greener pastures. I don't think riding the bench all year behind Bulger is a very green pasture. He was mad that he didn't get the starting job for this season handed to him so he obviously had a little hissy fit and followed his buddy out of town. The funny thing is he would have started most of the season if he would have stayed here.

No question Gus is a whiner, his "pride" didn't hurt him when he left to be a back-up for Bulger. (Bulger's backup) Gus always made excuses for everything. But I'd rather have Gus & Scott vs. Joey and Mulark. Mularkey is the real mess in the mix. I believe Joey could be better without Mulark. Everybody knows Joey has no pocket presence and is incapable of "buying time: for his receivers. The only way to remedy that is a good running attack, play action, sprintouts and bootlegs. Joey is a good ball handler and has good speed for a QB. Do you think Mulark would incorporate that into the attack? Nah! It's strictly 2/3 step drops and zing those 5 yarders. After a while, teams kinda get the idea. :fire:

The part that sounds relevant (and worrisome) to our team now is where GF says that Saban doesn't know much about the offense. That was a concern when we signed Saban. He was known as a defensive specialist but his offensive acumen was unknown. That's why Linehan was such a big signing for us. I wasn't nearly as thrilled with the Mularky signing and nothing has happened this season to make me rethink that position. There have also been rumors that our offense this season has Saban's fingerprints all over it. So I have no idea if we've been watching MM's or Saban's offense. If GF is right about Saban not knowing much about offense then we are most likely screwed unless DC or Lemon become the upper echelon QB we need (it's obvious that JH can't). A great QB can make most any OC look great.

There was nothing wrong with what Gus said and I don't understand the people crying about him being bitter. I would much rather have him right now than Joey because a) we would still have out 2007 5th rounder and b) he never handicapped the offense in the same way that Joey does (i.e. making Chambers useless).

Frankly, I wish he were still here, starting for another season to allow a first-round rookie QB we'd drafted to get warmed up. That's the route we should have taken. I don't find his comments about Saban comforting, nor do I find them surprising.

I agree with this 100%. Gus got the job done.... bottom line. Yes he had help and benefited from a strong defense but still he was efficiant for the most part. I thought it was a shame to cast him aside. He was good for the organization at the time.

A couple of things. Gus was at least speaking what he felt and not some PC bs. We always get on players for not saying anything worth while and when one does he gets slammed.
If Sage wouldn't had won that game against Barfalo then we would have ended up drafting Cutler or Leinart.
If Gus would have stayed, he would be the one playing and would had probably pushed Culpepper to the sidelines one game sooner which would have gave us a better chance at the playoffs.
**** happens.

LOL, the funny thing to me is he did NOT want to stay and be a backup here, but decided to go be a back up in St Louis! The slap in the face of him is that if he was the back up here ... he would have played a BUNCH of games. Where in St Louis, he has played ZERO!!!!

Sorry Gus, but you really have to think things through. Daunte would be the starter, but off of surgery the odds of you playing are HIGH.

Who really cares what frerotte has to say, he is back to being a backup like he has been all his career. He did solid for us but to give him all the credit for us winning last year is ridiculous. Alot of teams saw him play last year and no one tryed to sign him to be thier starter, that speaks volumes. we would have been stupid to keep Gus at that insane price, I truly wish Saban had benched him like he said so we could have kept him ay lower price. He had value but not as a starter. Boo friggin hoo we tried to upgrade Qb and he did not want to be Daunte's backup, so he became Bulger's backup.

DITTO!!!

How many teams has this guy been on?? Give me a break!! He's got quite a chip on his shoulders!! I'm not saying that he doesn't have a right to his opinions, but sometimes it's best to just shut up. He lacks class and respect!!

Last year I was the head of the Gus bashing....and as much as I think he wasnt very good, Id kill to have him back in Miami over what we have now.

Not painting saban in the best light with the benching talk or the comments on him as a leader/getting involved in the offense. take it with a grain of salt considering saban sent the guy packing, can't expect him to have too much love after that.

I don't trust the media so I don't put much stock into stuff like this. You never really know when there is a bottom line or alternative motive driving a positve/negative article/interview. But I'll say this, if Gus Frerotte is as cool and genuine as that interview made him out to be, then Nick Saban might really be the jerk people say he is. Then again, it's just an interview of a guy who was given the boot yet again.

Saban also shot down a quote attributed to former quarterback Gus Frerotte on cnnsi.com that alleged Saban wanted to bench Frerotte for last season's season finale against the New England Patriots to save the team money on the incentives Frerotte was set to make.

"I found out later that coach Saban wanted to bench me for that last game of the season, because I had a bunch of incentives on the line, and it could have saved the organization money," Frerotte said. "But Scott (Linehan) told him, 'He's the guy who's gotten us this far. There's no way we can bench him now.' "

Linehan, the Dolphins' offensive coordinator last year, is now the coach of the St. Louis Rams. Frerotte is the backup to Rams starter Marc Bulger.

Saban said he never wanted to bench Frerotte, and suggested someone might have fed him wrong information to make sure Frerotte didn't return to Miami.

"That's absolutely not true," Saban said. "I make those decisions, Scott Linehan doesn't make them and he didn't make them here, and maybe somebody told Gus Frerotte that to get him to leave here, but that is absolutely not true. I mean, I would swear on my life, my children's life and everybody else that that is absolutely not true.

"I'm not accusing anybody, but that is absolutely not true."
