GM Candidates Still Confused About Power Structure

I have been involved with numerous job interviews and not one involved the person managing payroll.

You don't get it. She negotiates every deal with every agent for every player. The GM says he want linebacker X and discusses with Dawn the number of years he is looking for and the $ range between $A and $B that he believes a player of X's ability should be paid. She is a tough attorney. She negotiates every single clause. Knowing what they want and also knowing what they are prepared to accept. Do you really think that Ireland personally handled everything in the negotiation. No, Dawn handled the offers and counter-offers and all negotiable parts and then at the end agreement is reached.
The GM needs to understand the market. It was clear from Ireland's comments from 2 years ago that he grossly underestimated the WR free agent market when players like Pierre Garcon were available and we were the underbidder - the net effect was that Miami let Marshall go to Chicago and we missed out on all of the available top WRs and were left with a string of lesser talented WRs (although Hartline stepped up when given the opportunity).
Jacquesstrap - in short she doesn't just manage payroll, she is the tough negotiator. The Agents are probably active in trying to fuel an issue because they want her gone.

The Bucs have tabbed Jason Licht as their new General Manager. The two sides are still working out the contract.

Glazer's turn to take a potshot at Fins:

Jay Glazer ‏@JayGlazer 9 mins Btw, the Bucs job Licht has been tabbed for is a "real" GM job as he has control of the draft & other personnel decisions.

I thought Lovie Smith had authority over personnel and draft.

If this is true, it's safe to say Licht was one that had concerns.

Sounds like an article designed to stir people up and cause trouble.
Dawn Aponte is a top negotiator and she has responsibility to negotiate with the respective agents. She is smart and she is tough and every agent probably wants her out because she is a much tougher negotiator than the men. Some might think that this sounds crazy that a woman could be tougher than a man. But I believe it.
The GM appointed will select the players he wants and tell Dawn the broad parameters, but then she does the deal.

If Aponte is the best person for the job I have no issue with her being in charge. My issue is she got so much power in the organization by using back door politics and manipulating people. Ross can say the GM will have full autonomy for the roster but we all know that is total BS. If Philbin doesn't want a FA he will let Aponte know and all she has to do is not negotiate a contract that would be accepted by the FA.

There was a recent article that stated that Dawn Aponte was involved in the GM interview process. I could see how that would cause confusion. If her role as stated by Ross is only on the money side, than why is she involved with interviewing the GM?

Of course she has to be involved in interviews. At the end she will ask the potential new GM some question in regards to cap and cap figures. While she is doing the negotiation the GM and her have to work closely together. She certainly doesn't want a tool bag to work with if the guy has absolutely no clue about numbers.

Good point. Must be a media creation.

I really don't know how long you are going to keep this schtick up but I told you in the other gazillion threads about the same subject: You have no idea how an NFL franchise works. Period.

Miami has the Dolphins
The Greatest Football Team
We take the ball from goal to goal
Like no one's ever seen
We're in the air, we're on the ground
We're always in control
And when you say Miami

You are talking Dysfunction.

Why not promote Brian Gaine if it is a mess that much?

Sorry you feel that way. However, at the end of each week when I did my assessments, I got a ton of positive feedback.

This site is about debating all things Dolphins and I question the process right now.

Probably the same people who are supporting you with your current whining. And that is really not saying much.

I think you hold yourself too high up for that little front page gig you have (not sure how you even got that gig). Personally I stopped reading that garbage after your 2nd or 3rd "assessment". Most people also tend to not use that "thumbs down" button to often but I am sure there is plenty of people who are not as fond of that gig as the "ton" () of positive feed back.

When you start comprehending how an NFL franchise operates then you might get the respect you seek not with stating the obvious in what you call "assessment".

But if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy keep going.

:bobdole:

And in how many job interviews have you participate where payroll is determined by contracts including roster bonuses, goal oriented bonuses on a contract length anywhere from 1-5 years with guaranteed money in an industry who tells you "you can spend that much and no more"?

Your answer will be: 0

But continue on.....

Or maybe there are real issues here that need to be cleaned up. I am not sure what Steve Ross has done that warrants the trust people are granting him here? If he had a positive track record, I would give him the benefit of the doubt. However, that is not the case.

He can start a positive track record by landing a quality GM...soon btw...and allow him the power to right this ailing ship.
This on top of the fact that the new GM had no say in the OC hire and will have no say on the fate of Failbin.

Ross has shown he does not know how to run a football team IMO.

What I would like know is who is conducting the interviews? I thought I read, Aponte, Philbin, and Peterson were conducting the interviews, if this is true I can understand the confusion....since when does the person's who is applying for the job get interviewed by the people he will be in charge of?
