there was some thought Howard would hold out in search of an extension
Yep, a lot of players get paid #1 money who have not only an injury history, but recent injury history. It is the NFL and injuries happen but his has been consistent and recent. 2 out of his 3 years, he has missed at least 4 games. That is an issue for ANY player, much less one looking the be paid as the best at their position.Who are all these mythical players who never get injured or miss games? If no injury history whatsoever is a requirement for extension on this team, it’s going to continue to suck *** in perpetuity.
You guys kill me with this "it's the right thing to do" rhetoric. It's a sporting business....improving your bottom line is the right thing to do no more no less. That's the nature of capitalism.

He had a great season. I have no issue making him play out another year, personally. Though I don't think it'll happen. He's played this money game aggressively, to his own credit, and he will get paid either this year or next.
Do you really think we're getting a discount signing him now? The only advantage we have trying to sign him now is that it's bird-in-hand versus if we try next year I can picture him telling us to kick rocks and out bid the rest of the world.
So, in conclusion, if we're going to sign him....you got to sign him this year.
Absolutely would probably get a discount signing him this year. While highest paid cbs are 14-15 million a year at the moment, add another 10 million to next years salary cap and maybe top cbs got for 16-17 million. Not only that but if you offer a fair contract now at 12-13 a year with a nice guaranteed money, most players will be advised to take the guaranteed money. Pretty large risk for Howard to turn down a fair deal now only to play next year and risk a potential injury. Not only that but he’s making 2 million this year. By accepting a deal that averages out 12 million a year you’d make 10 million more this year. Why would you turn that down to make maybe 2-3 more million a year but it’s going to take you 4-5 years to make up that 10 million you missed out on by not accepting the year earlier. We aren’t going to get him for 8 million a year but anything within 1-2 million below his market value is pretty much a no brainer.
I was waiting to see who'd be the first one to mention the franchise tag. I hope we can work a fair deal for both him and the team and that he can stay healthy.12-13 is not a reasonable deal. Safeties are making that now . . . .not elite corners.
A discount would be anything in the 15m to 16m range. Highest paid CB in the NFL but Miami catches a break on the overall value of the deal because of the early extension.
Howard hits unrestricted free agency, he will get 5/85 at minimum, probably over 5/90. He WILL reset the market either way . . . before Jalen Ramsey probably gets the first $20 million AAV CB deal either next offseason or the one after it.
And thats fine . . . .salary cap is rising, these contracts aren’t fully guaranteed . . . .top players in their mid 20’s should get the biggest deals and Howard definitely falls in line.
However he would get franchise tagged if a deal is not reached so Miami does have some backpocket leverage here.
CB hasn’t caught up salary wise because there really hasn’t been a healthy young one that has played at a level to get that record setting deal. Patrick Peterson’s was 5 years ago, Josh Norman’s was 3 years ago at age 28.
I am expecting a longterm deal before camp begins. Heavy signing bonus with the bigger cap hits kicking in starting 2020.
