Howard Not Holding Out Which Is The Right Thing To Do.

Absolutely would probably get a discount signing him this year. While highest paid cbs are 14-15 million a year at the moment, add another 10 million to next years salary cap and maybe top cbs got for 16-17 million. Not only that but if you offer a fair contract now at 12-13 a year with a nice guaranteed money, most players will be advised to take the guaranteed money. Pretty large risk for Howard to turn down a fair deal now only to play next year and risk a potential injury. Not only that but he’s making 2 million this year. By accepting a deal that averages out 12 million a year you’d make 10 million more this year. Why would you turn that down to make maybe 2-3 more million a year but it’s going to take you 4-5 years to make up that 10 million you missed out on by not accepting the year earlier. We aren’t going to get him for 8 million a year but anything within 1-2 million below his market value is pretty much a no brainer.

This is the unrealistic expectation fans have that turn them on players. 12-13M a season for an ascending young All-Pro corner? Not even close.

all I am saying is if you have 120 million in cap room and do not sign an ascending top 5 corner... then you should be fired
Totally agree on signing him. It's about time we started locking up our own drafted players. Everyone knows this guy is a great one in the making. Stop having other teams treat us like farm system

I will be happy if re-sign X. I wouldn’t be mad if we got a first for him but would actually probably like to re-sign him at this point. Is everyone sure he wants to stay?

Damned if you do, damned if you don't - Kiko Alonso, Reshad Jones, Ryan Tannehill - all got unnecessary early extensions (Reshad got it ****ing twice). It's just a guess, really. And if you extend early, you better be getting a home town discount (like we got with Tannehill, like we DIDNT get with Reshad twice - why the **** do they keep extending that guy early for full price?)
Jones played at a high level. The other guys didn’t warrant their pay days.

He isn't going to accept anything below market value. He's either going to reset the market this year, or next year. He's smart, offering him a discount deal would only distance us further.

There is no team discount coming for the Dolphins. This year is the only year we have any leverage as we still hold his contract and we can offer him a payday 365 days before anyone else.

If you're going to sign him, sign him this year, asap.

The second extension was premature and overly expensive for a guy coming off a season ending injury after the team showed he wasn’t irreplaceable in 2016.

The restructure was lolphins.

Tannehill got a standard forward thinking extension for a QB that a team believed can be a franchise guy. He may of not proved to be that franchise guy to get a big extension at the time but he doesn’t have to . . .and the deal had outs.

Once again the restructure was lolphins

Have less issues with the Alonso deal. Tendering him always made the most sense but he played well in 2016 and team was bare at LB. Also the Cuban connection seemed like a no brainer from a marketing perspective. Seems like a “Miami guy”.

Branch was a straight up panic overpay after a decent season.

Howard will be the highest paid CB, which is what you need to expect when it comes time to sign him. That will last about 1 year when another CB becomes the highest paid CB. Ramsey will sign a contract that will make Howards seem like a good deal in a couple of years.

also, and keep this on the QT, but Tunsil will be the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL...at least for a year.

Wrong, it’s the nature of humans and it exists in everyone, including the bourgeoisie socialists who pretend to be altruistic and benevolent.

Wrong. It doesnt exist in me. I was offered more money at work but rejected it so other person wouldnt lose his job. Not everyone is brainfed by medias.

How do people not see the BS? Jalen Ramsey is the best CB? And how did the Jags do last year? Redskins gave huge contract to Norman and he hasnt lived up to it. This is what happens. Stop overpaying.

Or at least stop with the guaranteed money. None of us average joes get guaranteed anything. Players dont like it? Go bag groceries.

If you watched Howards INTs, some were thrown right at him. Plus, an elite CB should be able to do well against an elite receiver. Howard sucked against Hopkins. That game proved he isnt elite.

No contract yet. Let him play out rookie contract and see if it wasnt just a one year thing.

I am hesitant to call him elite or top 5 at this point in his career. I did a quick search of rankings of top CB's and not a single one had him in the top 5. His catch % is impressive but the 16.2 yards per catch was second worst in the league. Being injured shouldn't be the only factor that causes caution but when it is 2 out of 3 years it makes you wonder if it is long-term or not. The only good thing about his injuries are that they didn't include an Achilles, which is much harder to recover from. I do agree that he should be resigned but I don't think he "deserves" a deal that sets the new standard for corners. Hopefully this front office is not going to throw Monopoly money around like the last regime.

Tremaine Johnson signed with the Jets last year in free agency for 14.5 MM annually. The salary floor for X is 16 million a year with about 60 million in guaranteed money. That’s the floor.

And he wasn’t playing anywhere near the same level as x coming in. In fact you could say Johnson was coming off of a down year.

Some of these posters are in la la land when it comes to money.

Pretty much agree with everything here. The only difference is I'd not have done a restructure for Tannehill at all. I hate the R word.

If we get a 1st for him, trade him, if we don't, I would wait until next year to sign him, unless we can front load cap hit in 2019 and erase his last year on his rookie contract.

Stephon Gilmore is arguably the best CB in the league and one of the highest paid (maybe the highest, can't be bothered to check because I don't care about that nonsense) and last year was the first in which he played every game. Not sure why the Pats don't let that turd go. Kyle Fuller is the only good CB I can think of that hasn't missed any games and that could easily change next season, because that's the nature of the sport. Further, Howard likely missed the last few games so he could get an early jump on the meniscus surgery he possibly could have waited for the offseason for. The team was out of the hunt, so why not get it done earlier so he could be ready for camp and prevent more serious injury down the road? I guess you can hold that against him if you want, but it makes no sense to me.
Gilmore has missed 15 games in 7 years, Howard has missed 13 in 3 years....so that comparison is kind of a joke. Hold it against him? Are you his agent or something? You absolutely hold it against him, just as you give major props to how he has played when he was healthy 75% of the time. It absolutely is part of the equation!

Jones got extended twice early - the second time, coming off a season ending injury where the team went from 1-5 with him in the roster to 9-1 without him.

Let me repeat, he got an EARLY extension AFTER a season ending injury in which the team performed MUCH better without him (whether that has to do with him or not, I don't mean to say, but I do mean to imply we did just fine without him).

Jones is overrated on here because we've been horrible for so long. Good player who's paid above his value and just so happens to be a ****y prick to distasteful levels.

Howard was targeted 4 times gave up 3 catches for 23 yards and 1 TD vs Hopkins. How is that sucking? Even if he did get torched....so what? Do you think elite CB's never ever get torched? Champ Bailey an elite 1st ballot HOF CB was torched by Jerry Porter, and Chad Johnson just going by memory.
