THIS is starting to get weird.

Now I had heard a while ago that believe it or not the Dolphins were SERIOUSLY considering the merits of Terrell Owens via free agency.

I took it with a grain of salt, as I'm sure we ALL did. I mean not only do you have to ask where Miami would get the money, you'd have to wonder why T.Owens would want to come to Miami considering their QB situation. They aren't about to get a gunslinger down here like Peyton Manning and Owens has gone on record saying he wants a strong armed QB that can get him the ball...like Donovan McNabb....and UNLIKE, Jeff Garcia.

So he comes to MIAMI??? Shyeah. For what, Jay Fiedler's over/underthrown deep passes? Or maybe its so that he can wait 3 years for us to develop a decent first round pick QB like Rivers or Henson (except that Rivers has no better a gun than Garcia).

BUT according to the article, according to sources close to T.Owens, Miami is on his "short list" of teams...AND the dolphins really ARE considering him very strongly.

With Owens' age (30) and attitude problems, teams might really bargain down his price I suppose. Still it would be hard to imagine us affording Owens even at a bargain price.

LESSON OF THE DAY

I think what we should all take from this is that cutting this $11 to $17 million of cap that we need to get under the $78 million mark is not going to be as hard as we think. Restructuring Zach alone reportedly saves $4.5 million. Cut Griese and that saves another $6 million or something. Cut Fiedler and there's another $5 or $6 million.

In other words, cap "jail" my @ss. Miami has the bollocks to go out and be real players in this free agency period if they DECIDE THEY WANT TO. Say hello to some quality OL upgrades.

Error!

Releasing Fiedler saves barely $1 million

Thomas saves a little over $4 million ($3.6 million by guaranteeing the roster bonus and $437,000 converting salary to bonus ($2.845 million---->$660,000).

Griese: saves a bit over $6 million.

Getting to cap compliancy is not the problem, it's the cap space needed to re-sign FAs, shop in FA, and bonus money for the draft picks...that's where "cap jail" comes in.

Also, Owens has shown interest in how many teams?

Eagles, Jets, pats, fins, XYZ, ABC.....

You're just mad cuz T.O isn't interested in that Iceburg you guys call Barfullo.

:roflmao:

Actually his short list is said to be Miami, Philly, Atlanta, and Baltimore.

Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Buffalo, and the Jets have also been mentioned as possible destinations, but not so much by Owens so much as by media speculating on which teams are going to actually be INTERESTED in Owens.

4 teams is not a very long "short list"

The main point of the article is that Miami is on TO's 4 team short list, while Miami itself is actually entertaining the idea.

So unlike yourself, amateur cap specialist that you are, the Miami front office (professional cap specialists that THEY are) actually sees Owens as a possibility if not a very likely one.

BTW you're going to have to help me through this.

Jay Fiedler signed a 5 year contract prior to the 2002 season. The signing bonus was approximately $5 million.

2002....525k
2003....750k
2004....3,700k
2005....5,775k
2006....6,500k

Those are his scheduled base salaries. But he is scheduled a roster bonus when free agency begins of $2 million. So you add that to his 2004 base salary. If the Dolphins cut him prior to that roster bonus wouldn't they save roughly $3 million?

Cap issues notwithstanding, I'd LOVE to see T.O. in Miami. Am I counting on it? No, but if they do sign T.O., all sins of this offseason are forgiven, IMHO.

Clumpy is always predicting "Cap Jail" and yet somehow the Dolphins FO keeps making moves.

If only they were as smart as Clumpy:rolleyes:

I believe that 5 million bonus was spread out over the life of the contract. Jay has been paid 2 million of the 5 mill bonus. If we were to release him, that would accelerate the remaining 3 million onto THIS years cap.

That is why we would only save roughly 1 million on the cap this season.

The best move with Fiedler is to restructure him and have him stay on as a back up.
If we drop that 2 million bonus and drop him to league min that is about 5 million saved. I am not sure though how the 2 million bonus counts right now.

I'd love to have Owens. I don't give a crap about his antics, we need TALENT on our offense.

Ownes in Mami is intriguing. The guy can flat out play but at the same time, Miami doesn't need his antics. Anyone see the NFL Network the last few days? Well, TO was a guest reporter and I never seen someone talk about himself as much as he did. It obvious he isn't a team player.

This is interesting. I still can't imagine the Phinz pulling off something this huge.....

We've never really been big players in the FA market, and if we pulled this off, I would be completely shocked. They mentioned WR D. Jackson, and that would make sense, but T. Owens???....

I still can't beleive it....

PHINZ RULE!!!

TO could be the answer that Brunell was not. With an ok qb, rookie or otherwise, two killer Wrs would require the D to respect the passing game. TO can and does take a 5 yrd pass and go to sharpie land. The safeties would need to be back and Rivers, ramsey, maybe even henson or jay could look decent in that situation. They would be respected b/c of the WRs.

Draft Rivers, Sign Owens, go to the big dance.
