Jason Allen (not looking like a starting caliber player)

at least he never lets anybody walk into the endzone standing up... im trying to find a positive

[admin] Keep the name-calling to yourself.[/admin]

  1. Saban drafted a need position, not a position the silly fanboys with no knowledge of football wanted. For example, we didn't draft Chad Jackson. Boohoo. We are now having trouble deciding on who will be our 5th and possibly 6th WR. Most teams would kill for that "problem." (P.S. Gators players are overrated)
  2. The only reason I know of that Jason Allen was available at that spot was the questions over his injury. Our doctors found that it wasn't permanent, so Saban pulled the trigger.
  3. He is learning two positions of need, which requires time to learn especially in a complex system such as Saban's.
  4. Him being drafted provides hours of humor for those of us with anything resembling football knowledge as the ridiculous bust posts from "fans" 2 weeks into the preseason pile up like the contents of my toilet after a night of penny beers and a morning of menudo.

This is probably one of the more pointless threads that I've read on these here boards in a while. These remind me of the mindless "Ronnie Brown is a Bust" thread. The guy has practiced about 10-12 times total, playing one of the most difficult positions in Saban's defense with a side of corner back. Give the guy a f___ing break. It's way too early to start evaluating Jason Allen based on his performance in two meaningless games. If there is any time for him to be getting burned and blowing coverages, now is that time. These games don't count for anything so this is where you want to be making your mistakes. Let's see how he progresses before we make judgments.

Amen brotha ! Keep preachin it !

about j. allen.
i dont like how everybody is overly sensitive about that guy he really hasnt done too well but yes we all understand its been only 2 exhibition games... i recall in the jacksonville game they'd put him on special teams and he was the first 1 to nab the returner... i remember htinking "wow that guy is quick".... he definately got owned by that 3rd string running back vs the bucs but that guys size is far greater than jason allen's... i thought it was awesome nick saban riping him a new one... it's whatever im not one of the fans already going to crucify jason allen, but im also not a fan that is going to all out defend him either... like a lot of other people was not too amped about our first draft choice... i had my mind on manny lawson... but nick saban is the truth so whatever he does i can live with, knowing it will be for the best... his size looks pretty good and hes definately quick im sure he just needs to learn the system... i hope! he got good hands because our DL seems to pressure the **** out of qBs!

maybe you didn't see him get owned yet again...........man......

but in his defense, the dolphins were trying him out at CB and he only needs to learn how to tackle properly.........he doesn't tackle properly......he squats down and lets the ball carrier run into him instead of him running into the ball carrier and then wrapping up.

I agree with this 100%...I replayed both of his tackles where he got bowled over and he just put his body in front of the runner and bent over....as if just standing there would knock the guy down....this is the NFL Jason, get low and use your legs to wrap the guy up...he could seriously hurt his neck if he continues to tackle like that.

Jason Allen is such a willing tackler which is commendable, but the guy gets run over WAY TOO many times. He just does not have the body to knock a player backwards. He has excellent tackling form by getting low and wrapping up, but the kid just ends up on his back too many times sometimes resulting in a missed tackle. Seems as if the hip injury had him lose ALOT of strength but I say that without knowing how he plaed in college. I read that he doesn't shy away from contact which is obvious from watching him these last 2 games, but never read about him being an imposing tackler. His speed is evident by the couple of WR's he tracked down from behind. Obviosly, he was brought in as a pass defending specialist becuase support against the run is a glaring weakness in his game even though he gives full effort to do it. Like Saban said concerning the pass coverage in game 1 " the good thing about the mistakes is that it is mental and not physical. If a player is too slow to cover then that would be a huge problem, but that isnot the case." JAson Allens run support is a huge probelm. HE has excellent technique, excellent willingness to make contact but lacks the physical ability to give a pop. We're going to see Allen lay on his back ALOT in his Miami career.

Conclusion from watching him play..JAson Allen is a pass defending specialist.

Thats why he needs to bulk up big time. Ala Ronnie Brown.

Unfortuntely, thats going to happen next off-season so for now we just need to live with what we have.

I just hope that Coach Saban DOESN'T go after a backup running back when I believe we need more secondary help than anything.

If people are calling about our WR's, I'd try and get a solid CB to replace what we thought we had this year in Will Poole.

Saban knew what he was getting in Allen. Not sure if Saban would like Allen to bulk up and lose speed just to support the run better. I just believe Alen was brought in to be that pass defending specialist that can play CB or safety where I thought Allen was a complete safety prospect. JAson Allen is listed at 213 pounds by nfl.com, but he plays with the leg power (hip power maybe) of a 190 pound CB. I believe the hip injury is the reason for the lack of explosiveness on his tackles. Like, I said, he has perfect technique and has the speed to get to the RB, square his shoulder and deliver a pop. He just doesn't have the pop to go with the speed he positions himself with.

I thought Allen was a complete safety prospect but like I said by watching him play the last 2 games, it is evident to me he is a pass defending specialist.

Ronnie Brown was already bulked up before the rookie year. Look at the Ronnie Brown play where he broke about 6-7 tackles against the Browns resulting in a 2 maybe 3 yards gain. That is all Ronnie Brown before an NFL training program. What you see is what you get.

If you want to criticize Allen's first two games by all means do it. I don't think anyone here is saying Jason has looked awesome in those games. The problem is when you start making comments like JA is a hack and a bust people aren't going to take you seriously. It is possible Allen could end up being a bust but to say it after 2 pre season games is laughable. If that is all the time you need to judge people then everyone who wanted Manny Lawson would be wrong too, because I saw his first game and he didn't do anything too great. Forget the fact he is learning linebacker and adjusting to the NFL he didn't dominate so he sucks.

I happen to believe that Jason will end up being a solid guy in our secondary. I don't even think he has to live up to being the #16 pick. The fact is we needed a safety JA was the best available and we picked him up. I don't care if we got him at 16, 24, or 32 if he proves he can start in our secondary I will be perfectly happy. And I am ready to give him at least 2 years before I judge his success or failure.

And saying Deion Sanders wasn't fast is like saying the Pope is not catholic. That was one of the most rediculous posts I have ever read.

Thats not entirely accurate.

RB was running over people back in his college days.

BUT, he did bulk up this off-season due to RW being suspended and having been in the off-season training program with the team the entire time.

Here's an article from his own personal website.

Well for one I think we need to chill a bit it's only preseason. Come the real deal Saban will put the guys in that need to start. Allen has a great deal of tallent and it is way to soon to say he is a "bust". I actually think Allen will be a great addition to our staff this year IF he can stay healthy.

i was probably the 1st person on record who hated that pic.

it was a comfort pic for nick and i am wondering what he is going to do when all the sec guys he played against or recruited are gone?

who will he draft?

the cracks are starting to open wide.......

Yeah, his previous sec "comfort" picks have really not worked out. Brown, Crowder, Daniels. Oh, wait, they were all starters last year.
